Bilateral synchronous sporadic renal cell carcinoma: surgical management, oncological and functional outcomes

OBJECTIVE To analyse the functional and oncological outcomes of surgical treatment of bilateral synchronous sporadic renal cell carcinoma (RCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS Between 1969 and 2006, 57 patients with bilateral synchronous sporadic RCC were identified from our kidney database. The mean (range) follow-up was 4.8 (0.1–23.8) years; 28 patients (49%) had radical nephrectomy (RN) and contralateral nephron-sparing surgery (NSS), and 22 (39%) had bilateral NSS. BACKGROUND: St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a popular over-the-counter antidepressant. Its antidepressive effect has been attributed in part to inhibition of monoamine transporters and monoamine oxidase, on the basis of in vitro studies. METHODS: In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study, 16 healthy subjects (11 men and 5 women; mean age, 31 +/- 5 years) ingested either St John's wort (300 mg three times daily) or placebo for 7 days. Small renal cell carcinomas – How dangerous are they really? Results of a large multicenter study

Modern diagnostic ultrasound and cross-sectional imaging has enabled the detection of increasing numbers of renal tumours. The aim of this study was to investigate the tumour- and patient-specific characteristics and prognosis of small renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) after surgical resection.The study included 2197 patients who underwent surgical resection of histologically confirmed RCC ⩽ 4 cm between 1990 and 2011. PCA3 as a second-line biomarker in a prospective controlled randomized opportunistic prostate cancer screening programme

Objectives: PCA3 performance as a single second line biomarker is compared to the European Randomised Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer risk calculator model 3 (ERSPC RC-3) in an opportunistic screening in prostate cancer (PCa). Material and methods: 5,199 men, aged 40-75y, underwent prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening and digital rectal examination (DRE). Men with a normal DRE and PSA >= 3 ng/ml had a PCA3 test done. All men with PCA3 >= 35 underwent an initial biopsy (IBx) 12 cores. Men with PCA3 = 3 ng/ml and DRE is normal, IBx could be avoided in 12.5% less than if ERSPC RC-3 is used and would reduce the false negative cases by 36.2%. Acute inflammatory cell-capillary endothelial cell interactions, related to injury and repair, were investigated light and electron microscopically in acute human bacterial pyelonephritis. In inflammatory infiltrate-adjacent microvessels, the small capillaries were completely occluded by leukocyte plugs and the large capillaries were densely filled with acute inflammatory cells adhering to the endothelium.
