Annexin II is present on renal epithelial cells and binds calcium oxalate monohydrate crystals.
2003
Attachment of newly formed crystals to renal epithelial cells appears to be a critical step in the development of kidney stones. The current study was undertaken to identify potential calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystal-binding proteins on the surface of renal tubular cells. Apical membranes were prepared from confluent monolayers of renal epithelial cells (MDCKI line), and COM crystal affinity was used to isolate crystal-binding proteins that were then subjected to electrophoresis and electroblotting. Microsequencing of the most prominent COM crystal-binding protein (M(r) of 37 kD) identified it as annexin II (Ax-II). When exposed proteins on the surface of intact monolayers were bio…
Effect of Choice Feeding in the Pre-weaning Period on the Growth Performance of Calves during the Pre- and Post-weaning Periods
2017
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of choice feeding in the pre-weaning period on the growth performance of calves during the pre- and post-weaning period. It is possible that high Crude protein (CP) intake during the pre-weaning period may improve post-weaning performance of calves. Currently, there is insufficient data available on the effect of pre-weaning feeding method on post-weaning performance of calves; therefore the aim of this study was to examine the effect of choice feeding on growth performance of calves during the pre and post-weaning period. Results: Twenty eight male and 28 female Holstein calves were assigned to two different feeding systems. After weanin…
Early deaths in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL): results of the Italian Pediatric Cooperative Group for Therapy of Acute Leukemia (AIL-AIEOP).
1984
In this retrospective multicentric study, we report on early deaths (ie, those that occurred during the first month of treatment) in a total of 943 newly diagnosed ALL pediatric patients registered from 1976 to 1981 at 21 centers of the AIL-AIEOP. Objectives of this study were as follows: (1) to verify the incidence and the cause of early death in a wide population of children with ALL and (2) to elucidate factors associated with early death and therefore to identify “high-risk” groups of patients. Out of the 943 ALL patients, 39 (4.1%) early deaths were registered. Main causes were infection, 20 patients (51.3%); hemorrhage, 11 patients (28.3%); uric acid nephropathy, 2 patients (5.1%); ca…

Background Pathogenic action of nitric oxide (NO) is responsible to a large extent for development of complications of the diabetes mellitus (DM). NO overproduction is largerly responsible for development of diabetic nephropathy. Thus search for compounds modifying NO production appears to be important for development of pharmacological remedies for treatment of DM complications. Dihydropiridines (DHP) appear to be prospective compounds from this point of view. The goal of the present work was to study alterations of NO production in streptozotocin model of DM in rats and ability of several DHPs and to normalize NO synthesis in kidneys of these animals. Methods Diabetes mellitus was induced…
Prognostic role of tumour multifocality in renal cell carcinoma.
2012
Study Type - Therapy (multi-centre cohort) Level of Evidence3b What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? In RCC about 5% of the patients presented multifocal disease. Prevalence of tumour multifocality was associated with a higher percentage of symptomatic RCC, higher pathological TNM stages, higher tumour grade and higher prevalence of tumour necrosis. Although in univariable analysis multifocal tumours had lower probability of CSS, tumour multifocality did not retain an independent predictive role in multivariable analysis. Patient age at surgery, gender, mode of presentation, pathological N stage and presence of metastases were independent predictors of CSS in multivariab…
Impact of several histopathological prognosticators and local tumour extension on oncological outcome in pT3b/c N0M0 renal cell carcinoma.
2009
OBJECTIVE To investigate the prognostic relevance of different histopathological features and local tumour extension in patients with pT3b/c N0M0 renal cell carcinoma (RCC), as recently new proposals of reclassifying tumour fat invasion in pT3b/c RCC have been made but the effect of other histopathological tumour characteristics and combinations thereof with tumour invasion has yet to be determined in these patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between 1990 and 2006, 1943 patients underwent surgical treatment for renal tumours in our institution, of which 175 patients (8.7%) had pT3b/c RCC. After exclusion of 57 patients (32.6%) with lymph node and/or distant metastases at the time of diagnosis, 1…
Tetanus Toxin Inhibits Neuroexocytosis Even When Its Zn2+-dependent Protease Activity Is Removed
1995
Tetanus toxin (TeTX) is a dichain protein that blocks neuroexocytosis, an action attributed previously to Zn(2+)-dependent proteolysis of synaptobrevin (Sbr) by its light chain (LC). Herein, its cleavage of Sbr in rat cerebrocortical synaptosomes was shown to be minimized by captopril, an inhibitor of certain metalloendoproteases, whereas this agent only marginally antagonized the inhibition of noradrenaline release, implicating a second action of the toxin. This hypothesis was proven by preparing three mutants (H233A, E234A, H237A) of the LC lacking the ability to cleave Sbr and reconstituting them with native heavy chain. The resultant dichains were found to block synaptosomal transmitter…
Segmental Ureterectomy Versus Radical Nephroureterectomy in Older Patients Treated for Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma
2022
Introduction: The world population is ageing and surgical procedures for older patients are associated with higher perioperative morbidity and mortality rates than in younger patients. Segmental ureterectomy (SU) has been proposed as an alternative to radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) for selected upper tract urothelial carcinomas (UTUC), to reduce post-operative morbidity, and preserve renal function. The aim of this study was to compare RNU and SU in terms of post-operative complications, functional outcomes, and overall survival (OS) in older patients treated for UTUC. Materials and methods: Data of patients aged 75 years or older and treated for UTUC were included. The primary outcome wa…
