A mild form of rituximab-associated lung injury in two adolescents treated for nephrotic syndrome: Table 1

2015

Rituximab is used as a steroid/calcineurin inhibitor-saving agent in patients with nephrotic syndrome. Safety is a crucial issue for justifying widespread use of the drug in this clinical setting. Rituximab-associated lung injury (RALI) is a severe and potentially life-threatening complication in oncohaematological and rheumatological patients, while it has only been anecdotally reported in association with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (2 cases described, 1 with fatal outcome). We describe a benign form of RALI occurring in two adolescents treated with rituximab (single pulse of 375 mg/m2) for nephrotic syndrome. Before treatment, the patients were in good clinical condition while receivin…

Comparative analysis of direct and indirect costs of two minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of renal/ureteral calculi smaller than 2 cm

2020

[EN] Objective: To perform a comparative analysis of indirect and direct costs of two minimally invasive techniques (extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) vs. ureteroscopy with holmium laser (URS/RIRS)) for the treatment of renal/ureteral calculi smaller than 2 cm. Material and methods: Prospective, comparative, non-randomized study of 84 patients treated for kidney stones smaller than 2 cm between January and December 2016. Of these, 38 (45.67%) were treated with ESWL (18 renal lithiasis and 20 ureteral lithiasis) and 46 (54.32%) with URS/RIRS (22 renal lithiasis and 24 ureteral lithiasis). A total of 19 (41.3%) patients in the URS/RIRS group and 15 (39.5%) patients in the ESWL grou…

Reflections on the Hohmann Transfer

2004

Walter Hohmann was a civil engineer who studied orbital maneuvers in his spare time. In 1925, he published an important book (Ref. 1) containing his main result, namely, that the most economical transfer from a circular orbit to another circular orbit is achieved via an elliptical trajectory bitangent to the terminal orbits. With the advent of the space program some three decades later, the Hohmann transfer maneuver became the most fundamental maneuver in space. In this work, we present a complete study of the Hohmann transfer maneuver. After revisiting its known properties, we present a number of supplementary properties which are essential to the qualitative understanding of the maneuver.…

Microhabitat preference of caddisfly (Trichoptera) communities in a medium-sized lowland stream in Latvia

2011

The microhabitat preference of caddisfly (Trichoptera) communities was studied in 8 types of microhabitats in a fast-flowing, medium-sized, lowland stream in Latvia. A total 36 caddisfly taxa belonging to 14 families were recorded in microhabitat samples. A PCA biplot of caddisfly taxa abundance in microhabitats showed 3 distinct caddisfly taxa groups: depositional [Limnephilidae Gen. sp., Anabolia laevis (Zetterstedt) and Lasiocephala basalis (Kolenati)], lithal [ Agapetus ochripes Curtis and Psychomyia pusilla (Fabricius)], and submerged macrophyte and water moss caddisfly microhabitat communities ( Ithytrichia lamellaris Eaton, Hydropsyche siltalai Dohler and Hydropsyche spp. juv.). 3D-Ultrastructure, Functions and Stress Responses of Gastropod (Biomphalaria glabrata) Rhogocytes

2014

Rhogocytes are pore cells scattered among the connective tissue of different body parts of gastropods and other molluscs, with great variation in their number, shape and size. They are enveloped by a lamina of extracellular matrix. Their most characteristic feature is the "slit apparatus", local invaginations of the plasma membrane bridged by cytoplasmic bars, forming slits of ca. 20 nm width. A slit diaphragm creates a molecular sieve with permeation holes of 20×20 nm. In blue-blooded gastropods, rhogocytes synthesize and secrete the respiratory protein hemocyanin, and it has been proposed-though not proven-that in the rare red-blooded snail species they might synthesize and secrete the he…

Genotypic Analysis of E. coli Strains Isolated from Patients with Cystitis and Pyelonephritis

2012

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection is the most common health problem affecting millions of people each year, mainly caused by a large genetically heterogeneous group of Escherichia coli called uropathogenic E. coli This study investigates the genotypic analysis of E. coli strains isolated from patients with cystitis and pyelonephritis. METHODS: During 2008-2009, 90 E. coli strains were analyzed, consisting of 48 isolates causing pyelonephritis in children and 42 isolates causing cystitis. Having identified the strains by standard methods, they were subtyped by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and their corresponding patterns were compared using dendrogram. RESULTS: Sixty five PFGE p…
