Neuromuscular Fatigue After a Ski Skating Marathon

The aim of this study was to characterize neuromuscular fatigue in knee extensor muscles after a marathon skiing race (mean ± SD duration = 159.7 ± 17.9 min). During the 2 days preceding the event and immediately after, maximal percutaneous electrical stimulations (single twitch, 0.5-s tetanus at 20 and 80 Hz) were applied to the femoral nerve of 11 trained skiers. Superimposed twitches were also delivered during maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) to determine maximal voluntary activation (%VA). EMG was recorded from the vastus lateralis muscle. The device has been used successfully in abdominal operations and because of its features, it has been applied recently in thyroid surgery to minimize the risk of complications such as laryngeal nerve palsy and hypocalcemia, and also to reduce the operating time. Objectives: To verify the frequency of oral and facial involvement in diagnosed leprosy patients. Study design: This study was performed on 100 leprosy patients (62 male, 38 female, mean ages 51.86±6.1). After explaining the study design, we studied descriptive information including: patient’s sex, age, job, place of birth, familial history of leprosy, types of disease (lepromatous, borderline and tuberculoid leprosy), ocular and oral lesions, facial involvement and neuropathy. Abducens palsy occasionally has been observed after diagnostic lumbar puncture (DLP).1-3 Its risk is not exactly known. We are aware of only one report, which mentions not a single case among 1,341 DLPs when using 22-gauge needles.4 At our clinic, an average of 800 inpatients a year undergo DLP. We usually use 22-gauge needles, and occasionally (in less than 5%), 20-gauge needles. Over a 14.5-year period, we saw two patients with abducens palsy—one unilateral, one bilateral—after DLP.
