Hybrid approach to surface roughness evaluation in multistage machining processes

2003

Abstract An assessment of surface quality in turned, ground and honed specimens is made by means of a computer-based processing of digitised surface profiles. Three different methods of surface finish characterisation, i.e. statistical, fractal and neural network-based approaches are examined and compared. Correlations between some representative roughness parameters and the fractal dimension (D) values estimated were found. Consequently, they can be converted to their corresponding roughness parameters, i.e. Ra, Rz and RΔa. Finally, a set of parameters including the minimum surface finish data for machining of external cylindrical surfaces when using complex technological process, is propo…

Active magnetic bearing design study

2012

The purpose of this paper is to propose a useful method to implement active magnetic bearings (AMBs) on an existing rotating shaft which rotates on conventional bearings. This is feasible if AMBs can produce the same reaction loads of conventional ones and if the size of vane is large enough to host an AMB. As this substitution could offer some difficulties due to the different size between magnetic bearings and conventional ones, a set of equations are performed to show that a variation of some parameters can solve this problem. The journal ratio is the geometrical parameter introduced to develop the present analysis. The variation of journal ratio does not produce a variation of the pole…

Surface Ordering and Surface Segregation in Binary Alloys

1996

Many technologically relevant properties of metallic alloys are determined by the structure of their surfaces, especially in the field of catalysis and corrosion. One important aspect of a surface or grain boundaries is, that the stoichiometry of the alloy close to the surface normally differs from the bulk stoichiometry. Due to different interaction energies and different atom sizes of the components, one of them will get enriched at the surface, a phenomenon called surface segregation[1].

Static and dynamical properties of a supercooled liquid confined in a pore

2000

We present the results of a Molecular Dynamics computer simulation of a binary Lennard-Jones liquid confined in a narrow pore. The surface of the pore has an amorphous structure similar to that of the confined liquid. We find that the static properties of the liquid are not affected by the confinement, while the dynamics changes dramatically. By investigating the time and temperature dependence of the intermediate scattering function we show that the dynamics of the particles close to the center of the tube is similar to the one in the bulk, whereas the characteristic relaxation time tau_q(T,rho) of the intermediate scattering function at wavevector q and distance rho from the axis of the p…

Particle Filtering for Tracking in 360 Degrees Videos Using Virtual PTZ Cameras

2019

360 degrees cameras are devices able to record spherical images of the environment. Such images can be used to generate views of the scene by projecting the spherical surface onto planes tangent to the sphere. Each of these views can be considered as the output of a virtual PTZ (vPTZ) camera with specific pan, tilt and zoom parameters. This paper proposes to formulate the visual tracking problem as the one of selecting, at each time, the vPTZ camera to foveate on the target from the unlimited set of simultaneously generated vPTZ camera views. Assuming that the selected vPTZ camera is a stochastic variable, the paper proposes to model the posterior distribution of the underlying stochastic p…

Spinodal decomposition in thin films: Molecular-dynamics simulations of a binary Lennard-Jones fluid mixture

2005

We use molecular dynamics (MD) to simulate an unstable homogeneous mixture of binary fluids (AB), confined in a slit pore of width $D$. The pore walls are assumed to be flat and structureless, and attract one component of the mixture (A) with the same strength. The pair-wise interactions between the particles is modeled by the Lennard-Jones potential, with symmetric parameters that lead to a miscibility gap in the bulk. In the thin-film geometry, an interesting interplay occurs between surface enrichment and phase separation. We study the evolution of a mixture with equal amounts of A and B, which is rendered unstable by a temperature quench. We find that A-rich surface enrichment layers fo…

Fostering sustainable community outcomes through policy networks: a dynamic performance governance approach

2021

This chapter will illustrate how an “outside-in” view of policy making may implement a balanced perspective for assessing sustainable outcomes through an integrated Dynamic Performance Management and Governance framework. In the next sections such a framework will be illustrated and applied to different examples of collaborative networks. In the remaining part of this section practical implications from an “outside-in” view of policy making will be illustrated.

Smartness, Sustainability and Resilience: Are They Related?

2019

In the imminent future, cities have to face not only an increasing urbanization but also the negative consequences of natural and human disasters. From this point of view, a city should be considered as vulnerable to climate change and other natural negative events. Thus, the challenge of a city consists in remaining on a sustainable development path. To reach this object the concepts of smartness, sustainability and resilience for a city should be intertwined. Starting from the analysis of a bright city as an integrated approach, the aim of this study consists in propose a first framework of an index which should include sustainable, smartness and resilient indicators. Integrating and meas…

Recent advances in green industrial networking [Guest Editorial]

2016

The articles in this special section focus on green industrial networking. Due to the explosive increase in energy usage, it is essential that governmental and industrial institutions address this problem. Therefore, the development of green and low-carbon economy has recently become a hot issue in the industry. It is envisioned in such cases to meet the growing demands for industrial networking with limited resources. This is considered one of the challenges that needs to be addressed. Addressing such key problems will hopefully allow us to reach the realization of sustainable development. We believe that network technologies will be critical and will greatly contribute to achieving large-…

The Influence of Social Vision, Social Networks, and Financial Return on Social SME Sustainability

2020

Social entrepreneurship is one of the catalysts of poverty reduction and sustainable development, but its impact in developing countries is not rapid in comparison to traditional entrepreneurship. The idea is to explain the phenomenon from an entrepreneurial perspective and to focus on entrepreneur sustainability. The data for this study was collected at the firm level with questionnaires through Qualtrics online survey platform. The structured questionnaires target the Social Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises in Nigeria. This study provides a fundamental understanding of structural relationships that exist between the social vision, social network, financial return, innovation, an…
