Network Capacity Estimators Predicting QoE in HTTP Adaptive Streaming
2022
The aim of adaptive HTTP streaming technology is preserving the best possible video streaming quality for viewers in heterogeneous network conditions. This can be achieved by making multiple quality versions of the video available. Switching between versions during playback should be imperceptible and fluent. The decision about quality-level switching is typically based on network capacity estimation and buffer occupancy, which predict the risk of stalling. Since quality-level switching and stalling are directly evident to the user, they are often classified as influence factors of quality of experience (QoE). In this paper, we observe different network capacity estimators and buffer behavi…

Sieci społecznościowe w ukraińskiej edukacji: blaski i cienie
2018
Big Data Applications for Disaster Management
2017
International audience; The term "disaster management" comprises both natural and man-made disasters. Highly pervaded with various types of sensors, our environment generates large amounts of data. Thus, big data applications in the field of disaster management should adopt a modular view, going from a component to nation scale. Current research trends mainly aim at integrating component, building, neighborhood and city levels, neglecting the region level for managing disasters. Current research on big data mainly address smart buildings and smart grids, notably in the following areas: energy waste management, prediction and planning of power generation needs (based on smart meter readings,…
Search for intermediate mass black hole binaries in the first and second observing runs of the Advanced LIGO and Virgo network
2019
Gravitational wave astronomy has been firmly established with the detection of gravitational waves from the merger of ten stellar mass binary black holes and a neutron star binary. This paper reports on the all-sky search for gravitational waves from intermediate mass black hole binaries in the first and second observing runs of the Advanced LIGO and Virgo network. The search uses three independent algorithms: two based on matched filtering of the data with waveform templates of gravitational wave signals from compact binaries, and a third, model-independent algorithm that employs no signal model for the incoming signal. No intermediate mass black hole binary event was detected in this sear…
Domain‐specific neural networks improve automated bird sound recognition already with small amount of local data
2022
1. An automatic bird sound recognition system is a useful tool for collecting data of different bird species for ecological analysis. Together with autonomous recording units (ARUs), such a system provides a possibility to collect bird observations on a scale that no human observer could ever match. During the last decades, progress has been made in the field of automatic bird sound recognition, but recognizing bird species from untargeted soundscape recordings remains a challenge. 2. In this article, we demonstrate the workflow for building a global identification model and adjusting it to perform well on the data of autonomous recorders from a specific region. We show how data augmentatio…
Offsetting harmful ecological impacts by restoring conservation areas
2019
Suomessa on kuitenkin tällä hetkellä monia suo…
Topological ranks reveal functional knowledge encoded in biological networks: a comparative analysis
2022
Abstract Motivation Biological networks topology yields important insights into biological function, occurrence of diseases and drug design. In the last few years, different types of topological measures have been introduced and applied to infer the biological relevance of network components/interactions, according to their position within the network structure. Although comparisons of such measures have been previously proposed, to what extent the topology per se may lead to the extraction of novel biological knowledge has never been critically examined nor formalized in the literature. Results We present a comparative analysis of nine outstanding topological measures, based on compact vie…
Export Barrier Perceptions in Tanzania: The Influence of Social Networks
2012
In this article, the author empirically examines export barriers Tanzanian firms encounter in attempting to initiate and/or expand export activities and the strategies they use for overcoming these barriers. Based on a social network perspective, the research hypothesizes that firms exploiting diverse networks should normally encounter fewer export barriers. Using a survey dataset collected from 122 manufacturing firms, the findings support the notion that networking reduces export barriers. More specifically, exploiting a large number of strong ties relative to weak ties, and a large number of institutional ties relative to business ties, can substantially enhance firms’ capabilities of ov…
