Scavenging in the realm of senses: smell and vision drive recruitment at carcasses in Neotropical ecosystems

2022

Social information, acquired through the observation of other individuals, is especially relevant among species belonging to the same guild. The unpredictable and ephemeral nature of carrion implies that social mechanisms may be selected among scavenger species to facilitate carcass location and consumption. Here, we apply a survival-modelling strategy to data obtained through the placement and monitoring of carcasses in the field to analyse possible information transmission cascades within a Neotropical scavenger community. Our study highlights how the use of different senses (smell and sight) within this guild facilitates carcass location through the transmission of social information bet…

Impact of parasitoid-associated polydnaviruses on plant-mediated herbivore interactions

2022

Insect herbivores interact via plant-mediated interactions in which one herbivore species induces changes in plant quality that affects the performance of a second phytophagous insect that shares the food plant. These interactions are often asymmetric due to specificity in induced plant responses to herbivore attack, amount of plant damage, elicitors in herbivore saliva and plant organ damaged by herbivores. Parasitoids and their symbiotic polydnaviruses alter herbivore physiology and behaviour and may influence how plants respond to parasitized herbivores. We argue that these phenomena affect plant-mediated interactions between herbivores. We identify that the extended phenotype of parasit…

Glass Transition and Glass Dynamics

2014

The transition from an undercooled liquid towards a glass (glass transition) is introduced and discussed in terms of mode-coupling theory. It is demonstrated that mode-coupling theory leads to a two-step relaxation scenario near the transition with time-critical exponents, which characterize the two relaxation steps (beta and alpha relaxation). The anomalous vibrational properties of a disordered solid (glass) is explained in terms of a model with spatially fluctuating harmonic force constants.

Exploiting EDCA for Feedback Channels in Hybrid VLC/WiFi Architectures

2021

In this paper, we consider integrating VLC and WiFi technologies in a scenario in which Light-Emitting-Diodes (LEDs), acting as network access points (APs) for ultra-dense Internet of Things applications, are deployed into an indoor lighting infrastructure. In such a scenario, RF-links can be exploited for complementing VLC-links in dealing with mobility and bidirectional communications, which can be problematic due to the limited coverage areas and self-generated interference of VLC APs. In particular, we consider the possibility of supporting a technology-based duplexing scheme, in which downlink and uplink transmissions are performed by means, respectively, of VLC and WiFi interfaces int…

Characterization of clamp-on current transformers under nonsinusoidal conditions

2009

This paper reports the performance of clamp-on current transformers under nonsinusoidal conditions. A set of experimental measurements helped to determine the ratio and the phase errors under two conditions: 1) sinusoidal excitation with frequencies from 45 to 1000 Hz and 2) nonsinusoidal excitation using the fundamental frequency and one harmonic, with adjusted phase shift. It was found that ratio and phase errors are affected by the phase angle between the harmonic and the fundamental and the harmonic amplitude. The effects of conductor location in the current transformer's window and of the air-gap width were also investigated. It was concluded that harmonic phase and ratio errors measur…

Maximizing network capacity in an heterogeneous macro-micro cellular scenario

2011

The problem of resource allocation in cellular networks has been traditionally faced at two different levels: at the network level, in terms of frequency planning and reuse pattern design, and at the cell level, in terms of cell capacity optimizations based on channel-dependent scheduling, link adaptation, power control, and so on. While this second aspect has been deeply investigated in literature, the first aspect has been mainly faced with static or semi-dynamic reuse utilization solutions. In this paper we deal with the problem of multi-cellular resource allocation in heterogeneous OFDMA environments with reuse factor equal to 1, where base stations with different power constraints coex…

Optimum pulse shape for minimum spectral occupancy in FSK signals

1984

The characteristics of a frequency shift keying (FSK) signal giving rise to maximum power within a prescribed frequency band are determined. The baseband pulse shape extends over any integer number of bit periods. An integral equation for the optimum pulse shape is derived and some simple properties of the solution are investigated. The equation has been solved for some values of the product of the prescribed band times the pulse duration and the signal shape is shown. Our results for the particular case of pulses only one bit period long are presented for purpose of comparison with results known in the literature. Plots of out-of-band power for some values of the prescribed band and of pul…

Substrate templating guides the photoinduced reaction of C60on calcite

2014

cited By 7; International audience; A substrate-guided photochemical reaction of C60 fullerenes on calcite, a bulk insulator, investigated by non-contact atomic force microscopy is presented. The success of the covalent linkage is evident from a shortening of the intermolecular distances, which is clearly expressed by the disappearance of the moiré pattern. Furthermore, UV/Vis spectroscopy and mass spectrometry measurements carried out on thick films demonstrate the ability of our setup for initiating the photoinduced reaction. The irradiation of C60 results in well-oriented covalently linked domains. The orientation of these domains is dictated by the lattice dimensions of the underlying c…

Assessing High-Order Interdependencies Through Static O-Information Measures Computed on Resting State fMRI Intrinsic Component Networks

2022

Resting state brain networks have reached a strong popularity in recent scientific endeavors due to their feasibility to characterize the metabolic mechanisms at the basis of neural control when the brain is not engaged in any task. The evaluation of these states, consisting in complex physiological processes employing a large amount of energy, is carried out from diagnostic images acquired through resting-state functionalmagnetic resonance (RS-fMRI) on different populations of subjects. In the present study, RS-fMRI signals from the WU-MinnHCP 1200 Subjects Data Release of the Human Connectome Project were studied with the aim of investigating the high order organizational structure of the…

A tale of two trade-offs: Effects of opening pathways from vocational to higher education

2021

Abstract This paper studies the effects of a vocational secondary school reform implemented in Finland between 1999 and 2001. The reform extended vocational two-year programs to three years and made all graduates eligible to apply for university. For identification, we exploit the gradual implementation of the reform, and use a differences-in-differences approach and administrative register data up to 13 years after the reform. We find no long-term effect on enrollment in further education or labor market outcomes. However, our results illustrate that the reform increased the dropout probability. Thus, the benefits of opening pathways from vocational to higher education may be outweighed by…
