Personalized multimedia touristic services for hybrid broadcast/broadband mobile receivers
2010
This paper presents the topology of a multimedia tourism service that targets mobile devices equipped with broadband and either multicast or broadcast access capabilities. Multicast / Broadcast access is used to handle the delivery of multimedia data to many simultaneous users in the service area. The solution adopted is based on existing standards for mobile TV services, but introducing features that enable the provision of generic multimedia services on top of mobile hybrid broadband and broadcast networks. Furthermore, this paper shows how to use standardized interfaces originally defined for interactive mobile TV broadcasting to build personalized mobile multimedia services that do not …

Detecting faulty wireless sensor nodes through Stochastic classification
2011
In many distributed systems, the possibility to adapt the behavior of the involved resources in response to unforeseen failures is an important requirement in order to significantly reduce the costs of management. Autonomous detection of faulty entities, however, is often a challenging task, especially when no direct human intervention is possible, as is the case for many scenarios involving Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), which usually operate in inaccessible and hostile environments. This paper presents an unsupervised approach for identifying faulty sensor nodes within a WSN. The proposed algorithm uses a probabilistic approach based on Markov Random Fields, requiring exclusively an ana…
Fast dendrogram-based OTU clustering using sequence embedding
2014
Biodiversity assessment is an important step in a metagenomic processing pipeline. The biodiversity of a microbial metagenome is often estimated by grouping its 16S rRNA reads into operational taxonomic units or OTUs. These metagenomic datasets are typically large and hence require effective yet accurate computational methods for processing. In this paper, we introduce a new hierarchical clustering method called CRiSPy-Embed which aims to produce high-quality clustering results at a low computational cost. We tackle two computational issues of the current OTU hierarchical clustering approach: (1) the compute-intensive sequence alignment operation for building the distance matrix and (2) the …
Regular versus as-needed budesonide and formoterol combination treatment for moderate asthma: A non-inferiority, randomised, double-blind clinical tr…
2015
Summary Background Treatment guidelines for patients with moderate persistent asthma recommend regular therapy with a combination of an inhaled corticosteroid and a longacting β 2 agonist plus as-needed rapid-acting bronchodilators. We investigated whether symptom-driven budesonide and formoterol combination therapy administered as needed would be as effective as regular treatment with this combination plus as-needed symptom-driven terbutaline for patients with moderate asthma. Methods In this non-inferiority randomised clinical trial, we recruited adult patients (18–65 years of age) with stable moderate persistent asthma, according to 2006 Global Initiative for Asthma guidelines. Patients …
Enterprise Start-Up in the Euro-Mediterranean Area. The case-study of Mazara Del Vallo’s Fishing District and Consortium
2016
Over the last twenty years, the European Union’s policies aiming to foster the entrepreneurship in the Euro-Mediterranean countries have failed. The theoretical model underlying these policies is inconsistent with the characteristics of the entrepreneurial ecosystems of these countries.Since no enterprise can survive in the long run if it has inconsistent characters with the ecosystem in which it operates, in Euro-Mediterranean countries it is necessary to adopt a specific theoretical model on start-up business, different from the one described by the international literature. The fundamental principles of this theoretical model therefore must be drawn from the common characteristics of suc…

New candidates for CD4 T cell pathogenicity in experimental neuroinflammation and multiple sclerosis
2015
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, which is thought to be triggered by environmental factors in genetically susceptible individuals leading to activation of autoreactive T lymphocytes. Large multi-centre genome-wide association studies have identified multiple genetic risk loci in multiple sclerosis. In this study, we investigated T cell transcriptomic changes in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, an animal model for multiple sclerosis. We correlated these findings with the multiple sclerosis risk genes postulated by the most recent Immunochip analysis and found that multiple sclerosis susceptibility genes were significant…
Deep Neural Networks for Prediction of Exacerbations of Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
2018
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients need help in daily life situations as they are burdened with frequent risks of acute exacerbation and loss of control. An automated monitoring system could lead to timely treatments and avoid unnecessary hospital (re-)admissions and home visits by doctors or nurses. Therefore we present a Deep Artificial Neural Networks for approach prediction of exacerbations, particularly Feed-Forward Neural Networks (FFNN) for classification of COPD patients category and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), for early prediction of COPD exacerbations and subsequent triage. The FFNN and LSTM models are trained on data collected from remote monitoring of 94 pa…
