Fast Fingerprints Classification only using the Directional Image

2007

The classification phase is an important step of an automatic fingerprint identification system, where the goal is to restrict only to a subset of the whole database the search time. The proposed system classifies fingerprint images in four classes using only directional image information. This approach, unlike the literature approaches, uses the acquired fingerprint image without enhancement phases application. The system extracts only directional image and uses three concurrent decisional modules to classify the fingerprint. The proposed system has a high classification speed and a very low computational cost. The experimental results show a classification rate of 87.27%.

EMBER—Embedding Multiple Molecular Fingerprints for Virtual Screening

2022

In recent years, the debate in the field of applications of Deep Learning to Virtual Screening has focused on the use of neural embeddings with respect to classical descriptors in order to encode both structural and physical properties of ligands and/or targets. The attention on embeddings with the increasing use of Graph Neural Networks aimed at overcoming molecular fingerprints that are short range embeddings for atomic neighborhoods. Here, we present EMBER, a novel molecular embedding made by seven molecular fingerprints arranged as different “spectra” to describe the same molecule, and we prove its effectiveness by using deep convolutional architecture that assesses ligands&…

Reports of the AAAI 2019 Spring Symposium Series

2019

Applications of machine learning combined with AI algorithms have propelled unprecedented economic disruptions across diverse fields in industry, military, medicine, finance, and others. With the forecast for even larger impacts, the present economic impact of machine learning is estimated in the trillions of dollars. But as autonomous machines become ubiquitous, recent problems have surfaced. Early on, and again in 2018, Judea Pearl warned AI scientists they must "build machines that make sense of what goes on in their environment," a warning still unheeded that may impede future development. For example, self-driving vehicles often rely on sparse data; self-driving cars have already been …

Simulated Annealing Technique for Fast Learning of SOM Networks

2011

The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is a popular unsupervised neural network able to provide effective clustering and data visualization for multidimensional input datasets. In this paper, we present an application of the simulated annealing procedure to the SOM learning algorithm with the aim to obtain a fast learning and better performances in terms of quantization error. The proposed learning algorithm is called Fast Learning Self-Organized Map, and it does not affect the easiness of the basic learning algorithm of the standard SOM. The proposed learning algorithm also improves the quality of resulting maps by providing better clustering quality and topology preservation of input multi-dimensi…

Towards a deep-learning-based methodology for supporting satire detection

2021

This paper describes an approach for supporting automatic satire detection through effective deep learning (DL) architecture that has been shown to be useful for addressing sarcasm/irony detection problems. We both trained and tested the system exploiting articles derived from two important satiric blogs, Lercio and IlFattoQuotidiano, and significant Italian newspapers.

A Neuro-Genetic Approach to Real-Time Visual Grasp Synthesis

2007

Grasping is an essential prerequisite for an agent, either human or robotic, to manipulate various kinds of objects present in the world. It is a fact that we would like robots to have the same skills as we do. However, despite the construction of human-hand-like robotic effectors, much work is still to be done in order to give robots the capability to grasp and manipulate objects. The goal of this work is to automatically perform grasp synthesis of unknown planar objects. In other words, we must compute points on the object's boundary to be reached by the robotic fingers such that the resulting grasp, among infinite possibilities, optimizes some given criteria. The space of possible config…

Recognition of Human Actions Through Deep Neural Networks for Multimedia Systems Interaction

2019

Nowadays, interactive multimedia systems are part of everyday life. The most common way to interact and control these devices is through remote controls or some sort of touch panel. In recent years, due to the introduction of reliable low-cost Kinect-like sensing technology, more and more attention has been dedicated to touchless interfaces. A Kinect-like devices can be positioned on top of a multimedia system, detect a person in front of the system and process skeletal data, optionally with RGBd data, to determine user gestures. The gestures of the person can then be used to control, for example, a media device. Even though there is a lot of interest in this area, currently, no consumer sy…

A Novel Expert System for Non-Invasive Liver Iron Overload Estimation in Thalassemic Patients

2014

Expert Systems can integrate logic based often on computational intelligence methods and they are used in complex problem solving. In this work an Expert System for classifying liver iron concentration in thalassemic patients is presented. In this work, an ANN is used to validate the output of the L.I.O.MO.T (Liver Iron Overload Monitoring in Thalassemia) method against the output of the state-of-the-art method based on MRI T2 assessment for liver iron concentration. The model has been validated with a dataset of 200 samples. The experimental Mean Squared Error results and Correlation show interesting performances. The proposed algorithm has been developed as a plug in for OsiriX Dicom View…

Artificial neural networks for fault tollerance of an air-pressure sensor network

2017

A meteorological tsunami, commonly called Meteotsunami, is a tsunami-like wave originated by rapid changes in barometric pressure that involve the displacement of a body of water. This phenomenon is usually present in the sea cost area of Mazara del Vallo (Sicily, Italy), in particular in the internal part of the seaport canal, sometimes making local population at risk. The Institute for Coastal Marine Environment (IAMC) of the National Research Council in Italy (CNR) have already conducted several studies upon meteotsunami phenomenon. One of the project has regarded the creation of a sensors network composed by micro-barometric sensors, located in 4 different stations close to the seaport …

Radial Basis Function Interpolation for Referenceless Thermometry Enhancement

2015

MRgFUS (Magnetic Resonance guided Focused UltraSound) is a new and non-invasive technique to treat different diseases in the oncology field, that uses Focused Ultrasound (FUS) to induce necrosis in the lesion. Temperature change measurements during ultrasound thermo-therapies can be performed through magnetic resonance monitoring by using Proton Resonance Frequency (PRF) thermometry. It measures the phase variation resulting from the temperature-dependent changes in resonance frequency by subtracting one phase baseline image from actual phase. Referenceless thermometry aims to re-duce artefacts caused by tissue motion and frequency drift, fitting the back-ground phase outside the heated reg…
