High-Temperature Electrolysis of Kraft Lignin for Selective Vanillin Formation

2020

Lignin represents the largest renewable resource of aromatic moieties on earth and harbors a huge potential as a sustainable feedstock for the synthesis of biobased aromatic fine chemicals. Due to the complex, heterogeneous, and robust chemical structure of the biopolymer, the valorization is associated with significant challenges. Unfortunately, technical lignins, which are a large side stream of the pulp and paper industries, are mainly thermally exploited. In this study, technical Kraft lignin was selectively electrochemically depolymerized to the aroma chemical vanillin. Using electricity, toxic and/or expensive oxidizers could be replaced. The electrodegradation of Kraft lignin was per…

An Economic Approach to Size of a Renewable Energy Mix in Small Islands

2022

The importance of renewable energy exploitation reduces the energy dependence on fossil fuels. Despite technological progress, in several remote areas and small islands the energy production is nowadays dominated by the utilization of fossil fuels. With new, increasingly stringent laws on polluting emissions and the need to lower production costs, it is necessary to exploit as many renewable sources as possible. In order to implement these considerations, it was decided to study renewable energy production. The study was carried out by estimating the energy production on a monthly and annual basis considering a mix of three plants, namely marine, solar, and wind. Simulations on wave product…

Energy Retrofit. A Case Study—Santi Romano Dormitory on the Palermo University

2021

Electrical and thermal consumption related to buildings, whether civil, commercial, public, or of any other kind, is very much in focus today. With today’s targets for energy savings, reduction of consumption, and environmental impact, it is necessary to carry out energy retrofits to modernize installations and their management. The realization of an effective improvement requires a careful analysis of the case study because each category of building has different requirements such as different load profiles and different installations and needs. This was carried out by studying the electrical and thermal load profiles. A good initial energy audit can provide the retrofit solutions capable …

A sizing approach for stand-alone hybrid photovoltaic-wind-battery systems: A Sicilian case study

2018

Abstract Solar and wind energy are the two most available renewable energy resources in the world. In this paper, a high-resolution analysis that allows sizing a hybrid photovoltaic-wind turbine-battery banks has been carried out. The analysis aims to minimize the annualized cost of the systems satisfying two reliability constraints. The solution has been obtained numerically by means of an iterative technique. The decision variables are the photovoltaic area, wind turbine radius, and battery capacity. A high-resolution model, based on fuzzy logic inference system, has been developed to evaluate the number of active occupants and the domestic electricity consumption. In order to allow a mor…

Analysing the Impact of the Glass Ceiling in a Managerial Career: The Case of Spain

2021

The need to break down the barriers facing women in the labour market arouses great interest for reasons of social and sustainability justice. This study breaks new ground on the topic of the “glass ceiling” by assessing the evolution of gender inequality in the proportion of individuals reaching high managerial positions. The application of the csQCA method to a survey of two cohorts of Spanish graduates in management sharing the same starting conditions reveals two factors: job variety and additional education, as conditions that are usually present in a successful managerial career. Our findings confirm the prevalence of the gender gap with little progress in recent years. Women find it …

Urban morphology detection and it's linking with land surface temperature: A case study for Tehran Metropolis, Iran

2021

Abstract Expansion of urban areas and alteration of natural land cover exacerbate the local climate change. To find out the effect of land cover changes on the local climate, in this study, the Local Climate Zone (LCZ) concept was utilized to detect urban morphology in Tehran Metropolis. LCZ and Land Surface Temperature (LST) can be identified and classified based on available remote sensing products. Firstly, LCZ maps of Tehran metropolis were extracted using Landsat imagery, and secondly, relationships between LCZ and LST were explored for three years (1990, 2004, and 2018). We found that Tehran urban structure has 13 LCZs based on imagery from Landsat 5 and 14 LCZs based on images for La…

Assessment of bioenergy potential in Sicily: a GIS-based support methodology

2008

Abstract A Geographical Information System (GIS) supported methodology has been developed in order to assess the technical and economic potential of biomass exploitation for energy production in Sicily. The methodology was based on the use of agricultural, economic, climatic, and infrastructural data in a GIS. Data about land use, transportation facilities, urban cartography, regional territorial planning, terrain digital model, lithology, climatic types, and civil and industrial users have been stored in the GIS to define potential areas for gathering the residues coming from the pruning of olive groves, vineyards, and other agricultural crops, and to assess biomass available for energy cu…

A novel magnetic Preyssler acid grafted chitosan nano adsorbent: synthesis, characterization and adsorption activity

2015

BACKGROUND This study concerns the application of magnetic heteropolyacids composite for the adsorption of organic compounds from aqueous solutions. A novel magnetic Preyssler/chitosan/Fe3O4 nanoparticles composite (PCNF) adsorbent was designed using a one-pot synthesis method and characterized by multiple techniques including X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS The adsorption activity of PCNF was evaluated by the removal of methyl orange (as an anionic azo dye model, MO) from aqueous solution and all the factors influencing the removal efficiency, such as adsorbent dosage, initial …
