Heart involvement in rheumatoid arthritis: systematic review and meta-analysis.

2013

Abstract Objective The aim of our study was to conduct a systematic review with meta-analysis of the current case–control studies about the valvular and pericardial involvement in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), asymptomatic for cardiovascular diseases. Methods Case–control studies were identified by searching PubMed (1975–2010) and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (1975–2010). Participants were adult patients with RA asymptomatic for cardiovascular diseases, and the outcome measure was the presence of cardiac involvement. Results Quantitative synthesis included 10 relevant studies out of 2326 bibliographic citations that had been found. RA resulted sign…

Social disparities, health risk behaviors, and cancer

2013

Background: Overall cancer incidence rates decreased in the most recent time period in both men and women, largely due to improvements in surgical therapeutic approaches (tertiary prevention) and screening programs (secondary prevention), but differences in cancer incidence and survival according to socioeconomic status are documented worldwide. Health risk behaviors, defined as habits or practices that increase an individual’s likelihood of harmful health outcomes, are thought to mediate such inequalities. Discussion: Obesity has been related with increased cancer incidence and mortality due to imbalance of leptin and adiponectin which are connected to activation of PI3K, MAPK, and STAT3 p…

Halitosis: new insight into a millennial old problem.

2011

The problem of halitosis has been reported since ancienttimes. References have been found in papyrus manuscriptsdating back to 1550 BC. Hippocrates advised that any girlshould have pleasant breath, making sure always to washher mouth with wine, anise and dill seeds [1].More than50 years ago, Blackburn [2] investigated halitosis in a case-series of 73 patients affected by leukemia. He found apeculiar odor of the breath resembling that of a freshlyopened corpse. This characteristic smell is not associatedwith clinical involvement of the gum, mouth, or upperrespiratory or alimentary tract. He associated this particularsmell with the hematologic disease. Nearly 15 years ago,the role of cadaveri…

An uncommon clinical picture: Wellens’ syndrome in a morbidly obese young man

2010

A 39-year-old man presented to the emergency department (ED) of the ‘‘Paolo Giaccone’’ Academic Hospital, Palermo (Italy). He had anterior chest pain that did not radiate to the neck or arms. The patient came from home where the chest pain initiated. The patient was morbidly obese (BMI 54 kg/m). At the ED, the patient’s blood pressure was 120/80 mmHg, the serum troponin I concentration was 0.029 ng/ml (normal values \ 0.034, borderline 0.034–0.12), myoglobin 45 ng/ml (normal values \ 120). While experiencing chest pain, the patient underwent a standard 12 lead electrocardiogram (ECG) that was normal. An echocardiogram, also during the chest pain, excluded the presence of hypo-akinetic left …

Osteonecrosis of the jaws in patients assuming oral bisphosphonates for osteoporosis: A retrospective multi-hospital-based study of 87 Italian cases

2013

Abstract Background Bisphosphonates (BPs) are currently the chief drugs for the prevention/treatment of osteoporosis; one of their adverse effects is the osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). The primary endpoints of this multi-center cross-sectional study are: i) an observation of the clinical features of BRONJ in 87 osteoporotic, non-cancer patients; and ii) an evaluation of their demographic variables and comorbidities. Methods 87 BRONJ patients in therapy for osteoporosis with BPs from 8 participating clinical Italian centers were consecutively identified and studied. After BRONJ diagnosis and staging, comorbidities and data relating to local and drug-related risk factors for BRONJ were col…

Legal liability in bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw

2014

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is an adverse reaction that may occur in patients administered with bisphosphonates (BP). This condition can cause high morbidity and hinder quality of life. Its treatment is complex and often unsatisfactory, and prevention strategies may have limited effectiveness, if any. Thus, managing patients treated with BP may result in exposure of the practitioner to legal liability or malpractice claims: legal actions pursuant to BRONJ are reported to be underway on three continents. Nonetheless, the attribution of liability, if any, is a complex process requiring, on the basis of current knowledge, a robust and pragmatic approach to the facts…

Dressings and Securement Devices of Peripheral Arterial Catheters in Intensive Care Units and Operating Theaters

2020

Background: Hemodynamic monitoring, implemented by the placement of peripheral arterial catheters (PACs), is a characterizing aspect of the intensive care units. Peripheral arterial catheters can continually detect blood pressure and quickly conduct blood sampling. The use of PACs is generally considered safe, without serious complications. Currently, only 25% of the implanted catheters are actually subject to complications, including accidental removal, dislocation, occlusion, and infection. All of these complications arise from inadequate catheter stabilization at the level of the skin. This study aimed to summarize and describe the effectiveness and characteristics of dressings and secur…

The Relationship between the Transforming Growth Factor β1 T29C Gene Polymorphism and Left Ventricular Geometry and Function in Hypertensive Subjects

2009

The distribution of the T29C TGFβ1 gene polymorphism was analyzed in 198 hypertensives with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and in 235 hypertensives without LVH. Circulating TGFβ1 levels, procollagen type III levels, microalbuminuria, and left ventricular geometry and function were evaluated in all the hypertensives with LVH subgrouped according to T29C TGFβ1 gene polymorphism. Circulating TGFβ1 was evaluated by ELISA technique, procollagen type III by a specific radioimmunoassay, microalbuminuria by radioimmunoassay, and left ventricular geometry and function by echocardiography. All groups were comparable for gender, age, and sex. Regarding T29C TGFβ1 gene polymorphism, prevalence of T…

PRESENTAZIONE DI UN CASO DI MENINGOCELE SACRALE ANTERIORE: CARATTERISTICHE NEURORADIOLOGICHE E DIAGNOSI DIFFERENZIALE

2013
