Formation of a dinuclear and a trinuclear Ni(II) complex on slight variation of experimental conditions: Structural analysis and magnetic properties
2017
Abstract A diphenoxido bridged dinuclear Ni(II) complex [Ni2L2(NO2)2] (1) and a μ2 and μ3-phenoxido, μ3-hydroxido, and μ2-nitrito (1κO:2κN) bridged trinuclear Ni(II) complex [Ni3L3(OH)(NO2)]·ClO4 (2), have been synthesized using a tridentate reduced Schiff base ligand HL (HL = 2-[(2-dimethylamino-ethylamino)-methyl]-phenol). Both complexes were characterized by X-ray structure determination and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. In both complexes the nickel atoms are six-coordinated with a distorted octahedral environment. The interesting feature of the trimeric complex 2 is that the three mononuclear units are assembled around a μ3-hydroxido ion in such a way that t…
Homo- and heterometallic complexes constructed from hexafluoroacetylacetonato and Schiff-base complexes as building-blocks
2018
Three new homo- and heterotrimetallic complexes have been synthesized and crystallographically characterized: [Cu2(saldmpn)2(μ-OCH3)2Cu2(hfac)2] (1), [Ni2(valaepy)2(hfac)2] (2), [Cu(saldmpn)Co(hfac)2] (3) [H2saldmpn is the Schiff-base resulting from condensation of salicylaldehyde with 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-diaminopropane and Hvalaepy results from the reaction of o-vanillin with 2-(2-aminoethyl)pyridine)]. The structure of 1 consists of a neutral tetranuclear species that can be viewed as resulting from mutual coordination of one {(hfac)Cu(μ-OCH3)2(Cu(hfac)} and two {Cu(saldmpn)} building blocks. Compound 2 is a binuclear complex that results from two {Ni(hfac)(valaepy} fragments, the nickel(II)…
New complexes of Ni(II) and Co(III) with a Schiff-base ligand derived from o -vanillin. Crystal structure, magnetic and catalytic properties of a dis…
2018
Abstract A binuclear complex, [Ni2L2(NO3)(H2O)(CH3CN)]ClO4·CH3CN (1), has been obtained using a Schiff-base ligand (HL) derived from o-vanillin and 4-(2-aminoethyl)morpholine. The crystal structure of 1 has been solved. Both Ni(II) ions are hexacoordinated, but they display different coordination spheres. The exchange interaction between the two nickel ions is antiferromagnetic (J = −7.9 ± 0.2 cm−1; H = −JS1S2), in line with the DFT calculations. Compound 1 has been tested as a catalyst in the epoxidation of various olefins. The reaction of the same ligand with a mixture of cobalt(II) perchlorate and nitrate affords a mononuclear Co(III) complex, [CoL2(H2O)]ClO4·CH3OH (2).
A ferromagnetic tetranuclear nickel(II) Schiff-base complex with an asymmetric Ni4O4 cubane core
2014
Abstract The ferromagnetic tetranuclear nickel(II) complex [Ni4(L)4(CH3OH)2]·2MeOH·8H2O (1) has been synthesized by reacting nickel nitrate hexahydrate with the Schiff base ligand H2L (H2L = N-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-methoxy-salicylideneamine). Complex 1 was characterized by analytical, thermogravimetric, optical and magnetic techniques. The solid state structure of 1 was established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystal structure determination shows the formation of a distorted Ni4O4 cubane moiety encapsulated by four Schiff base ligands. Compound 1 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P 1 ¯ with a = 12.7624(9) A, b = 15.0477(9) A, c = 16.8589(10) A, α = 94.732(2)°, β = 94…
Bis (μ-tetrazolato-NN′) bridged dinuclear nickel(II) Schiff base complexes: Tandem synthesis, structure and self assembly
2015
Abstract Two new bis(μ-tetrazolato-NN′) bridged dinuclear nickel(II) Schiff base complexes [Ni2L12(PTZ)2]·2(CH3)2SO·2.69H2O (1) and 2[Ni2L22(PTZ)2]·3H2O (2) (HL1 and HL2 are Schiff bases, HL1 = 2-((2-(dimethylamino)ethylimino)methyl)phenol, HL2 = 2-((2-(methylamino)ethylimino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol and HPTZ is 5-pyrazinyltetrazole) have been synthesized via [3+2] cyclo-addition of 2-cyanopyrazine and sodium azide in presence of nickel(II) acetate tetrahydrate and the respective Schiff bases. The structures of the complexes are confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Both complexes show fluorescence. The change in the denticity of the Schiff base blocking ligand is shown to …
Solution chemistry of N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneimine) and its copper(II), nickel(II) and iron(III) complexes
1991
Abstract Potentiometric determination of protonation-deprotonation equilibria of the N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneimine) (H2sal2en), the related N-(2-aminoethyl)salicylideneimine, (Hsalen), and their organic fragments, salicylaldehyde (Hsal) and ethylenediamine (en), has been used to study the equilibria involved in the formation of Schiff bases from Hsal, sal− and en and in their complex formation with copper(II), nickel(II) and iron(III) ions in dimethyl sulfoxide (dmso)-water (80:20 wt./wt.) mixture (25 °C and 0.1 mol dm−3 KClO4 ionic strength): en+Hsal⇔Hsalen; en+2Hsal⇔H2sal2en; en+ sal−⇔salen−; en+2sal−⇔sal2en2−; sal−+en+MN+⇔[M(salen)](n−1)+; 2sal−+en+Mn+⇔ [M(sal2en)](n−2)+. In these t…
Influence of the central metal ion in controlling the self-assembly and magnetic properties of 2D coordination polymers derived from [(NiL)2M]2+ node…
2014
Three new 2D coordination polymers (CPs) 2∞[(NiL)2Ni(μ1,5-N(CN)2)2]n (1), 2∞[(NiL)2Cd(μ1,5-N(CN)2)2]n (2) and 2∞[(NiL)2Zn(μ1,5-N(CN)2)2]n (3) have been synthesized by reacting a [NiL] “metalloligand” (where H2L = N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine) with three different metal(II) (Ni, Cd and Zn) perchlorates and sodium dicyanamide, with identical molar ratios of the reactants. All three products have been characterized by IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies, elemental analyses, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction and variable temperature magnetic measurements. The isomorphous compounds 1 and 2 consist of similar [(NiL)2M(μ1,5-N(CN)2)] (M = Ni for 1 and Cd for 2) angular trinuclear un…

2015
A new combination: The merging of visible‐light‐photoredox catalysis and nickel catalysis has been successfully achieved for cross‐coupling reactions. The synthetic scope and limitations of the combination of nickel and photoredox catalysis for Csp3-Csp2 cross‐coupling reactions is discussed.
On the G‐quadruplex binding of a new class of Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) salphen‐like complexes
2021
The involvement of non-canonical DNA structures, such as Gquadruplex (G4) DNA, in cancer development and progression has set the pace towards the renaissance of DNA-binding metal complexes. In this work, we report the DNA-binding of three Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) complexes of a salphen-like N4-donor ligand, bearing two imidazole groups condensed with a phenylenediamine moiety. Both duplex and G4 DNAs derived from human telomeres (hTelo), and a sequence mimicking the promoter of the oncogene myc (c-myc) were studied. UV-Vis and circular dichroism spectroscopic binding studies pointed out that, while all the three complexes bind the selected oligonucleotides, the Cu(II) derivative is the strong…
G4-DNA vs. B-DNA binding of Schiff base transition metal complexes
2014
The competitive binding of nickel(II), copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes toward B- and G4-DNA was addressed through spectroscopic titrations and rationalized by computational investigations, consisting of molecular dynamics simulations followed by density functional theory/molecular mechanics (DFT/MM) calculations [1]. The experimental DNA binding studies clearly highlight the selectivity of the compounds, in particular the nickel(II) complex, toward G4-DNA from both h-Telo and c-myc. Moreover, the compounds show biological activity against HeLa and MCF-7 cancer cell lines. Remarkably, the experimental DNA-binding affinity trend of the three metal complexes, obtained from the DNA-binding co…
