Electrophysiological Investigations of Retinogeniculate and Corticogeniculate Synapse Function

2019

The lateral geniculate nucleus is the first relay station for the visual information. Relay neurons of this thalamic nucleus integrate input from retinal ganglion cells and project it to the visual cortex. In addition, relay neurons receive top-down excitation from the cortex. The two main excitatory inputs to the relay neurons differ in several aspects. Each relay neuron receives input from only a few retinogeniculate synapses, which are large terminals with many release sites. This is reflected by the comparably strong excitation, the relay neurons receive, from retinal ganglion cells. Corticogeniculate synapses, in contrast, are simpler with few release sites and weaker synaptic strength…

Response to long-term NaHCO3-derived alkalinity in model Lotus japonicus Ecotypes Gifu B-129 and Miyakojima MG-20: transcriptomic profiling and physi…

2014

The current knowledge regarding transcriptomic changes induced by alkalinity on plants is scarce and limited to studieswhere plants were subjected to the alkaline salt for periods not longer than 48 h, so there is no information availableregarding the regulation of genes involved in the generation of a new homeostatic cellular condition after long-termalkaline stress.Lotus japonicusis a model legume broadly used to study many important physiological processes includingbiotic interactions and biotic and abiotic stresses. In the present study, we characterized phenotipically the response toalkaline stress of the most widely usedL. japonicusecotypes, Gifu B-129 and MG-20, and analyzed global t…

Study of Burseraceae resins used in binding media and varnishes from artworks by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and pyrolysis-gas chromatograph…

2005

In the present work, a study attempting to characterize the Manila elemi and Mexican copal resins from the Burseraceae family, which are used as components of varnishes and binding media of artworks, has been carried out. A new GC-MS method involving the use of methyl chloroformate as derivatisation reagent has been proposed. A second method which uses pyrolysis-GC-MS and hexamethyldisilazane as derivatization reagent has also been applied. Characterization of the main components of the mono-, sesqui- and triterpenoid fractions occurring in the raw materials has been achieved. Both alpha- and beta-amyrin have been established as the major triterpenoid compounds occurring in these resins tog…

Production of spray-dried proanthocyanidin-rich cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) extract as a potential functional ingredient: Improvement of stabili…

2018

International audience; Cinnamon proanthocyanidins present important biological properties. However, these molecules are unstable and possess an astringent taste, which can make their ingestion difficult. In this context, entrapment by spray-drying technology may be used to produce a concentrated extract with improved stability and reduced astringency. Thus, this work aimed to prepare spray-dried microparticles loaded with a proanthocyanidin-rich cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) extract (PRCE), immobilized in a maltodextrin matrix. Freeze-dried samples of the extract (without the carrier) were also prepared for comparison. The particles were characterized for moisture content, water activit…

Newest Results on the Chemistry and Pharmacology of TCM Drugs Containing Triterpene and Steroid Saponins

2012

The aim of this review is to provide newest results in the chemistry, pharmacology, and clinical studies of saponins-containing TCM drugs, some of them being listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. It appears that literature on triterpene saponins is more abundant than that of steroid saponins, and ginseng occupies a prominent position in the list. However, other TCM drugs are well documented in recent years belonging to the genera Astragalus, Gynostemma, Bupleurum, Clematis, Dipsacus, Platycodon, Gypsophila, Anemarrhena, Lonicera, Paris, Dioscerea, Tribulus, and Ophiopogon. From a Pharmacological point of view, the most relevant results have been obtained with the cancer-related activity and …

EP 34. Functional hierarchy within the neural network for optokinetic ‘look’ nystagmus

2016

Item does not contain fulltext Key nodes of neural networks for ocular motor control and visual motion processing have been localized using saccades, smooth pursuit, and optokinetic nystagmus (OKN). Within the context of an independent fMRI study using OKN, 9 bilateral network nodes were localized comprising cortical eye fields in frontal (FEF), supplementary motor (SEF), cingulate (CEF) and parietal cortex (PEF), visual motion centers MT+ and V6, the superior colliculus (SC), the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and the globus pallidus (GP). Here, we examined the network's functional hierarchy as present in the structural co-variation (SCoV) and resting-state (RS) fMRI, and the effect of R…

Ecological and agronomic importance of the plant genus Lotus. Its application in grassland sustainability and the amelioration of constrained and con…

2010

The genus Lotus comprises around 100 annual and perennial species with worldwide distribution. The relevance of Lotus japonicus as a model plant has been recently demonstrated in numerous studies. In addition, some of the Lotus species show a great potential for adaptation to a number of abiotic stresses. Therefore, they are relevant components of grassland ecosystems in environmentally constrained areas of several South American countries and Australia, where they are used for livestock production. Also, the fact that the roots of these species form rhizobial and mycorrhizal associations makes the annual L. japonicus a suitable model plant for legumes, particularly in studies directed to r…

El arquitecto Rafael Guastavino (1842-1908): obra en cuatro actos

2018

[EN] This text presents extensive new information on the figure of architect Rafael Guastavino Moreno (1842-1908), those around him, and his personal and family relationships with architecture. It also examines other artistic fields and trades such as music, carpentry and winemaking, all of which influenced and obtained feedback for Guastavino¿s architecture within the historical, political and economic situation of the three places where he lived in Spain: Valencia, Barcelona and Almudévar (Huesca), before emigrating to the United States of America, where his successful professional career as an architect is widely recognized in the literature

Effect of pollens and preys on various biological parameters of the generalist mite Cydnodromus californicus

2009

The generalist phytoseiid mite Cydnodromus californicus (McGregor) (Mesostigmata Phytoseiidae) is considered a very important biocontrol agent of the spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch both in greenhouses and field. Its capacity to feed alternative foods allows the increase of the population in field, even when the primary prey is not available. To investigate the effect of various alternative food substances present in the Mediterranean agroecosystems on the biological parameters of C. californicus, laboratory trials were carried out using 17 pollens and 3 preys. As it was expected, T. urticae was the best food for both the postembryonic development and the oviposition rate (100% of atta…
