Spatio-temporal patterns of thermal anomalies and drought over tropical forests driven by recent extreme climatic anomalies
2018
The recent 2015–2016 El Niño (EN) event was considered as strong as the EN in 1997–1998. Given such magnitude, it was expected to result in extreme warming and moisture anomalies in tropical areas. Here we characterize the spatial patterns of temperature anomalies and drought over tropical forests, including tropical South America (Amazonia), Africa and Asia/Indonesia during the 2015–2016 EN event. These spatial patterns of warming and drought are compared with those observed in previous strong EN events (1982–1983 and 1997–1998) and other moderate to strong EN events (e.g. 2004–2005 and 2009–2010). The link between the spatial patterns of drought and sea surface temperature anomalies in th…
Analysis of cold activation of the contact system in hereditary angioedema with normal C1 inhibitor.
2021
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) attacks are caused by excessive activation of the contact system. Understanding how the contact system is activated in HAE, especially in patients with normal C1 inhibitor (HAEnCI), is essential to effectively treat this disease. Contact system activation involves the cleavage of several proteins including Factor XII (FXII), high molecular weight kininogen (HK), prekallikrein, sgp120 (ITIH4) and C1 inhibitor (C1-INH) before the subsequent generation of bradykinin that mediates HAE. In this study, we evaluated the fragmentation and enzymatic activity of contact system proteins in HAEnCI plasma samples before and after contact system activation induced by incubatio…
Cationic Amino Acid Transporter-1-Mediated Arginine Uptake Is Essential for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Cell Proliferation and Viability
2019
Interfering with tumor metabolism by specifically restricting the availability of extracellular nutrients is a rapidly emerging field of cancer research. A variety of tumor entities depend on the uptake of the amino acid arginine since they have lost the ability to synthesize it endogenously, that is they do not express the rate limiting enzyme for arginine synthesis, argininosuccinate synthase (ASS). Arginine transport through the plasma membrane of mammalian cells is mediated by eight different transporters that belong to two solute carrier (SLC) families. In the present study we found that the proliferation of primary as well as immortalized chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells depen…

The impact of the 2015/2016 El Niño on global photosynthesis using satellite remote sensing
2018
The El Niño-Southern Oscillation exerts a large influence on global climate regimes and on the global carbon cycle. Although El Niño is known to be associated with a reduction of the global total land carbon sink, results based on prognostic models or measurements disagree over the relative contribution of photosynthesis to the reduced sink. Here, we provide an independent remote sensing-based analysis on the impact of the 2015–2016 El Niño on global photosynthesis using six global satellite-based photosynthesis products and a global solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) dataset. An ensemble of satellite-based photosynthesis products showed a negative anomaly of −0.7 ± 1.2 PgC in 2015, but a sli…
Reconstitution of T Cell Proliferation under Arginine Limitation: Activated Human T Cells Take Up Citrulline via L-Type Amino Acid Transporter 1 and …
2017
In the tumor microenvironment, arginine is metabolized by arginase-expressing myeloid cells. This arginine depletion profoundly inhibits T cell functions and is crucially involved in tumor-induced immunosuppression. Reconstitution of adaptive immune functions in the context of arginase-mediated tumor immune escape is a promising therapeutic strategy to boost the immunological anti-tumor response. Arginine can be recycled in certain mammalian tissues from citrulline via argininosuccinate in a two-step enzymatic process involving the enzymes argininosuccinate synthase (ASS) and argininosuccinate lyase (ASL). Here we demonstrate that anti-CD3/anti-CD28-activated human primary CD4+ and CD8+ T c…
Successful management of a cerebral abscess secondary to chronic cholesteatoma caused by Prevotella melaninogenica and Peptococcus anaerobius – A cas…
2016
Abstract Cerebral abscess following cholesteatomatous otomastoiditis is a life-threatening complication and poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We report a case of life-threatening cerebritis and cerebral abscess due to a collection of pus from an aerobic super infections occurring months after the apparent resolution of an otogenic brain abscess in a 67-year-old immunocompetent Italian female. Two gram-positive anaerobic pathogens were isolated during secondary neurosurgical procedures and antibiotic treatment was adopted to resolve the complications. Another objective of this study was to review the literature on gram-positive anaerobic pathogens and brain abscess complications i…

A seguito dell’esame autoptico, so…
