Effet de l'environnement sur l'interaction entre les gammares (Crustacea : Amphipoda) et leurs parasites manipulateurs acanthocéphales

2016

Many parasites with complex life cycle have developed the ability to alter the phenotype of their hosts. It is recognized that such changes in appearance and behavior are responsible for an increase in the probability of predation of their intermediate hosts by their definitive hosts. This phenomenon of parasite manipulation can have numerous consequences at the scale of the ecosystem, modifying the interactions between host populations and altering their ecological role. However, manipulative parasites received little attention from an ecological point of view. Thus, the effect of the environment on the interaction between these parasites and their hosts, in particular in terms of manipula…

Rapid construction of algebraic axioms from samples

1991

Abstract An axiom is called reliable if it is confirmed in several places in a given sample of algebra. A very effective algorithm for enumerating such axioms is described.

Real quadrics in C n , complex manifolds and convex polytopes

2006

In this paper, we investigate the topology of a class of non-Kähler compact complex manifolds generalizing that of Hopf and Calabi-Eckmann manifolds. These manifolds are diffeomorphic to special systems of real quadrics Cn which are invariant with respect to the natural action of the real torus (S1)n onto Cn. The quotient space is a simple convex polytope. The problem reduces thus to the study of the topology of certain real algebraic sets and can be handled using combinatorial results on convex polytopes. We prove that the homology groups of these compact complex manifolds can have arbitrary amount of torsion so that their topology is extremely rich. We also resolve an associated wall-cros…

Pseudo-exclusion from paternity due to maternal uniparental disomy 16.

1998

The investigation of a case of disputed paternity revealed indirect exclusion of the alleged father in the haptoglobin system and in the DNA single-locus system D16S309/Hinf I (MS205). The paternity index for the non-exclusion systems was > 10(6). Since both exclusion systems (HP and MS205) are located on chromosome 16, we investigated 10 microsatellite loci covering this chromosome with 10-20 cM resolution. Analysis of the child's chromosome showed only alleles of maternal origin and lack of inheritance of paternal alleles for five informative loci. The markers close to the centromere of chromosome 16 were heterozygous, whereas distal loci were either heterozygous or homozygous for materna…

Pigmentary mosaicism in hypomelanosis of Ito

1998

We report on a female with mental and motor retardation, facial dysmorphism, abnormal pigmentation reminiscent to hypomelanosis of Ito (HI), and karyotypic mosaicism involving a small supernumerary marker chromosome. The marker chromosome was defined by fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) as a ring X chromosome with breakpoints in the juxtacentromeric region. FISH analysis showed that the ring does not include the XIST locus at the X-inactivation centre and, therefore, may not be subject to X inactivation. X-inactivation studies with the HUMARA (human androgen receptor) and FMR1 assay showed a skewed X-inactivation pattern (85:15) with preferential inactivation of the paternal X chrom…

Arabidopsis thalianagenes contributing to differences in the outcome of infection with generalist and specialist strains ofTurnip mosaic virusidentif…

2020

AbstractPathogens can be classified as generalists or specialists depending on their host breadth. While generalists are able to successfully infect a wide variety of host species, the host range of specialists is limited to a few related species. Even though generalists seem to gain an advantage due to their wide host range, they usually pay a cost in terms of fitness within each host species (i.e., the jack-of-all trades, master of none). On the contrary, specialists have high fitness within their own host. A highly relevant yet poorly explored question is whether generalist and specialist viruses differ in the way they interact with their host’s gene expression networks. To identify host…

Changes in land use and physiological transitions of a Juniperus thurifera forest: from decline to recovery

2015

All Rights Reserved. Forest decline is frequently associated with infection; however, infections habitually affect trees that have been previously debilitated by environmental stress. Nevertheless, the causes and physiology of noninfectious forest decline are not well known. Some Juniperus thurifera L. forests presented severe (noninfectious) declines, with defoliations over 50%. The goal of this study was to determine the causes and characterize the physiology of this noninfectious decline, and we hypothesized that it could be related to environmental stress from increasing interspecific competition resulting from land abandonment. We randomly assigned60 trees to either a control group or …

Grip Force Adjustments Reflect Prediction of Dynamic Consequences in Varying Gravitoinertial Fields

2018

International audience; Humans have a remarkable ability to adjust the way they manipulate tools through a genuine regulation of grip force according to the task. However, rapid changes in the dynamical context may challenge this skill, as shown in many experimental approaches. Most experiments adopt perturbation paradigms that affect only one sensory modality. We hypothesize that very fast adaptation can occur if coherent information from multiple sensory modalities is provided to the central nervous system. Here, we test whether participants can switch between different and never experienced dynamical environments induced by centrifugation of the body. Seven participants lifted an object …
