Chemical Ecology of Insect Parasitoids: Essential Elements for Developing Effective Biological Control Programmes

2013

Insect parasitoids can find their hosts in complex environments and reproduce through a series of behavioural steps which are regulated mainly by chemical cues, termed semiochemicals. According to functional criteria, stimuli can be classified into four main categories: (A) cues coming from the habitat, the host microhabitat or the food plant, (B) direct host‐related cues, (C) indirect host‐related cues, and (D) cues coming from the parasitoid itself. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in elucidating the semiochemicals used by parasitoids to locate their hosts. Several studies provided interesting prospective for manipulating foraging behaviour of parasitoids in order to i…

Ploidy manipulation for genetic improvement in some Mediterranean fruit crops

2017

Plant breeding is focused on selection of new genotypes with improved traits. Conventional methods based on hybridization and those based on biotechnology (somatic hybridization, genetic transformation, ploidy manipulation, etc.) are used to create novel genetic variations. Biotechnology provides powerful tools for plant breeding, for instance, haploid technology allows achievement of homozygous lines from heterozygous parents in one step, which reduces significantly the time required by conventional methods. Concerning woody species, characterized by self-incompatibility, long juvenile period and high degree of heterozygosity, this technique is the only way to get homozygous lines. Haploid…

In vitro control of adventitious bud differentiation by inorganic media components in leaves of matureJuniperus oxycedrus

1995

The effects of changes in the concentration of macronutrients on BA-induced caulogenesis from leaves of matureJuniperus oxycedrus cultured on modified Murashige and Skoog or Schenk and Hildebrandt media are reported. The bud-forming capacity of the explants depended mainly on the ratios among the levels of ammonium, nitrate, and potassium. The most favorable media formulations for differentiation of adventitious buds were those with nitrate:potassium, ammonium:potassium, and nitrate:ammonium ratios near 1, around 0.1, and between 9 and 15, respectively. The total ionic strength of the media limited bud induction, but only when a disequilibrium of these ratios was produced.

New records of Cynipidae (Hymenoptera) from Italy

2015

New records of Cynipid gall wasps and inquilines for the Italian peninsula and Sicily and their new host plants for the Palaearctic Region are listed and commented on. Among them we find: Cerroneuroterus cerrifloralis (Mullner 1901) as new for Italy and new for the Palaearctic region as host on Quercus suber; Andricus multiplicatus Giraud 1859 on Q. suber, as new host for the Palaearctic region; Aylax papaveris (Perris 1839), reported in Italy over a century ago, but later overlooked; Cerroneuroterus minutulus (Giraud 1859), also reported more than a century ago from Sicily, but later overlooked. Among the inquilines are here listed: Synergus variabilis Mayr 1872, emerged from Janetia cerri…

On the occurrence and distribution of Calanipeda aquaedulcis Kritschagin, 1873 (Copepoda, Calanoida, Pseudodiaptomidae) in Sicily, Italy, with some n…

2019

The only population of the pseudodiaptomid copepod Calanipeda aquaedulcis Kritschagin, 1873 to date reported to occur in Sicily disappeared at the beginning of the XXI century due to deep environmental changes which affected the single site (Lake Biviere di Gela) known for this species on the island. In that site C. aquaedulcis is now replaced by Copidodiaptomus numidicus (Gurney, 1909), a diaptomid copepod whose distribution has been greatly increasing since the second half of the last century. In the present note, the occurrence of C. aquaedulcis in 12 novel water bodies spread throughout Sicily is reported, and some environmental data on the sites where the species was collected are prov…

Inhibition of Lymphocyte Proliferation during Parasitic Infection with Nippostrongylus Brasiliensis

1979

It is now well established that parasitic infections can lead to the production of high titers of IgE anti parasitic antibodies in experimental animals and in man (1,2). One of the best studied experimental systems involves the ability of the nematode parasite Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (N.B.) to stimulate a high titer reaginic antibody response to worm antigens in the rat. These studies were extended by the reports of Orr and Blair that parasitic infections can cause non specific proliferation of IgE antibody response against antigens unrelated to those of the parasite (3). The amplification of an already existing IgE antibody response can be induced before infection by inoculating the a…

IL-27 enhances the lymphocyte mediated innate resistance to primary hookworm infection in the lungs

2020

AbstractInterleukin-27 (IL-27) is a heterodimeric cytokine of the IL-12 family, formed by non-covalent association of the promiscuous EBI3 subunit and selective p28 subunit. IL-27 is produced by mononuclear phagocytes and unfolds pleiotropic immune-modulatory functions through high affinity ligation to IL-27 receptor alpha (IL-27RA). While IL-27 is known to contribute to immunity and to end inflammation following numerous types of infections, its relevance for host defense against multicellular parasites is still poorly defined. Here, we investigated the role of IL-27 during infection with the soil-transmitted hookworm, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, in its early intrapulmonary life cycle. I…

Technologies for cultivation and exploitation of microalgae in industrial applications

2020

This thesis work is focused on technologies for the development of the microalgal industry. During this 3-years PhD work several themes were addressed. Section 1 consists in a literature review concerning the general features of microalgae, their composition and a description of the photosynthetic process. Furthermore, themes such as biosynthetic pathways, growth kinetics, microalgae cultivation and their applications are reviewed. Section 2 focuses on the genetic manipulation of microalgae aimed at producing a vitamin B12-enriched food supplement. In this case, the human intrinsic factor gene, was inserted in the genome of the microalgae Chlamydomonas reinardhtii in order to integrate new …

Combined Endo- and Exoscopic Semi-robotic Manipulator System for Image Guided Operations

2006

This paper describes the development of a robotic assistance system for image guided operations. To minimize operation time, a multimodal user interface enables freehand robotic manipulation of an extracorporeal stereoscopic digital camera (exoscope) and an endoscope. The surgeon thereby wears a head-mounted unit with a binocular display, a head tracker, a microphone and earphones. Different view positioning and adjustment modes can be selected by voice and controlled by head rotation while pressing a miniature confirmation button with a finger. Initial studies focused on the evaluation and optimization of the intuitiveness, comfort and precision of different modes of operation, including a…

Prevalence of psychosocial risks in the justice administration staff of the valencian community (Spain)

2016

The objective of the study was to evaluate the psychosocial factors in the work of the justice personnel of Valencia (Spain) to identify the prevalence of psychosocial risks. The participants were 402 workers (28.11 % men) including managers, processors, and social assistants. We assessed using the UNIPSICO questionnaire (includes demand factors, resource factors, and consequences of psychosocial risks). The main risks were work overload (46.02 % of participants in a high risk situation) within the demands; the lack of resources to carry out the work (76.37 % in a high risk situation); and the lack of autonomy (67.41 % in a high risk situation). For the consequences, 61.44 % of participants…
