ULTRASOUND-ASSISTED AND ENZYME-ASSISTED EXTRACTION OF FRUCTANS AND PHENOLICS FROM PARSNIP (PASTINACA SATIVA L.)

2019

Parsnip (Pastinaca sativa L.) is a vegetable that gained attention due to its significant content of fructans, besides macronutrients and other biologically active compounds. The major compound of fructan class is inulin, an ingredient with prebiotic properties used in pharmaceutical and functional food industries. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the extraction yield of fructans and phenolics in fresh and dried parsnip root following non-conventional techniques (ultrasound and enzyme -assisted extraction) and to compare it to that of the traditional method. Extraction was performed in water, as eco-friendly solvent. Ultrasound-assisted extraction was optimized for different e…

Single electron yields from semileptonic charm and bottom hadron decays in Au+Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV

2016

The PHENIX Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured open heavy flavor production in minimum bias Au + Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV via the yields of electrons from semileptonic decays of charm and bottom hadrons. Previous heavy flavor electron measurements indicated substantial modification in the momentum distribution of the parent heavy quarks owing to the quark-gluon plasma created in these collisions. For the first time, using the PHENIX silicon vertex detector to measure precision displaced tracking, the relative contributions from charm and bottom hadrons to these electrons as a function of transverse momentum are measured in Au + Au collisions. We compare …

Factors controlling adventitious bud induction and plant regeneration in matureJuniperus oxycedrus leaves cultured in vitro

1994

The morphogenetic capacity of matureJuniperus oxycedrus L. leaves cultured in vitro has been studied, noting nutritive, hormonal, and environmental factors inducing differentiation and development of adventitious shoots. Bud primordia formed directly from the leaves. Highest bud differentiation rates were obtained when the explants were cultured for at least 21 days on a modified Schenk and Hildebrandt solidified medium containing 0.5 μM benzyladenine under a 16-h photoperiod. Maximum bud development and elongation was achieved on cytokinin-free medium containing 4% (wt/vol) sucrose and 0.05% (wt/vol) activated charcoal. Regenerated shoots were excised and induced to root on media with auxi…

Temperature-responsive inclusion complex of cationic PNIPAAM diblock copolymer and γ-cyclodextrin

2012

Aqueous mixtures of γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) and the thermosensitive cationic diblock copolymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-b-poly(3-acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride (PNIPAAM24-b-PAMPTAM(+)9) or the PNIPAAM homopolymer PNIPAAM47 have been investigated using various experimental methods. Solid γ-CD–polymer inclusion complexes (pseudopolyrotaxanes) form at ambient temperatures in fairly concentrated CD solutions. The NMR measurements showed that the stoichiometry of the inclusion complexes is close to two NIPAAM units per CD molecule. The cationic block of the copolymer is not incorporated into the CD cavity. Synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction spectra of the solid inclusion compl…

Biocompatible Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-halloysite Nanotubes for Thermoresponsive Curcumin Release

2015

The grafting of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAM) onto the halloysite external surface is proposed in order to obtain a novel thermoresponsive drug carrier for curcumin delivery. The new nanomaterial is characterized by means of FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and SEM investigations. A high density of polymer chain was achieved at the nanoparticle surface. The PNIPAAM dehydration phenomenon was observed in water above 32 °C that is nearly coincident with the lower critical solution temperature for the polymer. The colloidal stability as well as the wettability of the obtained nanomaterial may be triggered by temperature stimuli. In vitro tests simulating the gastro-intes…

Axillary shoot proliferation in cultures of explants from mature Juniperus oxycedrus trees.

1995

We developed procedures for the micropropagation of Juniperus oxycedrus L. using shoot apices or nodal segments from mature plants. Of the media and explants examined, best culture establishment was obtained with shoot apices cultured on modified Schenk and Hildebrandt medium (SH medium) without growth regulators; however, shoot multiplication was only achieved when shoot apices isolated from shoots grown on SH medium without growth regulators were subcultured on SH medium containing 0.5 micro M benzyladenine. None of the auxins and methods tested for root induction provided satisfactory results.

Psychometric Properties and a Preliminary Validation Study of the Italian Brief Version of the Communication Styles Inventory (CSI-B/I)

2020

People will typically develop a communication style that tends to be coherent with their own fundamental personality traits. The current debate on communication style acknowledges the construct of adaptive behavior as an appropriate area where to include both the strictly personal aspects and social learning and cultural assimilation, which translate into communicative style as a specific form of adaptation integrating the behavioral and personality perspectives. Due to the lack of instruments in the Italian psychometric scenario to assess communication styles, the present study included the translation and validation of the Italian short version of the Communication Styles Inventory (CSI-B…

Impacts of biomanipulation on lake ecosystem structure revealed by stable isotope analysis

2008

Rehevöityneiden järvien ravintoketjukunnostus epäonnistuu useinJärvien ravintoketjukunnostusta eli biomanipulaatiota on käytetty paljon rehevöityneiden järvien kunnostuksessa. Biomanipulaatiossa pyritään poistamaan järvestä pieniä eläinplanktonia syöviä kalalajeja, lähinnä eri särkikaloja ja pieniä ahvenia, jolloin eläinplanktonin määrä ja yksilökoko kasvavat. Tällöin kasviplanktonia ravintonaan käyttävä eläinplankton pystyy paremmin kontrolloimaan kasviplanktonin määrää järvessä. Biomanipulaation onnistumisen kriteerinä voidaan siis pitää kasviplanktonin määrän vähenemistä ja siitä aiheutuvaa veden kirkastumista. - Varsin suoraviivaisesta teoriasta huolimatta saavutetut tulokset eivät aina…
