Inhibition of denitrification and N2O emission by urine-derived benzoic and hippuric acid

Abstract Hippuric acid (HA) in cattle urine acts as a natural inhibitor of soil N2O emissions. As HA concentration varies with diet, we determined critical HA levels. We also tested the hypothesis that the inhibition occurs because the HA breakdown product benzoic acid (BA) inhibits denitrification rates. During a 64-day incubation, we quantified emissions from artificial urine varying in HA, BA and glycine (Gly) concentrations, added to a sandy pasture soil. Increasing HA concentration from 0.4 to 5.6 mmol kg−1 soil significantly decreased the average N2O flux by 54%. Background: The volatile anesthetic sevoflurane exhibits neuroprotective properties when assessed for motor function and histopathology after cerebral ischemia in rats. Damage of hippocampal neurons after ischemia relates to a number of cognitive deficits that are not revealed by testing animals for motor function. Differences in the topographical distribution of EEG activity during surgical anaesthesia and on emergence from volatile anesthetics.

Computerized processing of a 16 channel EEG allows mapping and display of cortical electrical activity in a useful mode for intraoperative monitoring. We studied the topographical distribution of EEG-activity displayed as spectral maps comparing inhalational anaesthesia with isoflurane or enflurane during surgical anaesthesia and emergence. Two groups of nine patients each were anaesthetized with one of the two regimens. The EEG patterns during steady state end-tidal concentrations of isoflurane (0.7-1.1%) or enflurane (0.8-1.3%) showed highest activity in the frontal and occipital areas. Evaluation of two oxygen analyzers by computerized data acquisition and processing

Monitoring of inspired oxygen concentration during anesthesia with nitrous oxide is becoming accepted as essential. This type of monitoring demands accurate monitors that respond rapidly. We evaluated two such devices for their response patterns to rapid changes in oxygen concentration, a galvanic or "fuel cell" unit and a polarographic device. Data were stored after analog-to-digital conversion. The response patterns to stepwise changes in nitrous oxide and oxygen mixtures were recorded at flow rates ranging from 2 to 10 L/min. Comparison of Two Mathematical Models for Greenhouse Gas Emission from Membrane Bioreactors

In this study two mathematical models (Model I and Model II), able to predict the nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from an University Cape Town (UCT) – membrane bioreactor (MBR) plant, have been compared. Model I considers the N2O production only during the denitrification. Model II takes into account the two ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) formation pathways for N2O. Both models were calibrated adopting real data. Results highlight that Model II had a better capability of reproducing the measured data especially in terms of N2O model outputs. Indeed, the average efficiency related to the N2O model outputs was equal to 0.3 and 0.38 for Model I and Model II respectively.

Influence of Ketamine anaesthesia on renal and cardiovascular functions in mongrel dogs

Cardiac minute volume, renal blood flow, pulse volume, heart rate and urinary output were determined by means of experiments made on 10 mongrel dogs. Anaesthesia was maintained by nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture administered with Ketamine. Under the conditions described it was observed that -- contrary to what is found in human patients -- cardiac and renal minute volume as well as pulse volume are significantly decreased. No significant changes has been observed in the heart rate. Whilst urinary output was decreased, the excretion of individual electrolytes was found to be different.

Greenhouse gases from sequential batch membrane bioreactors: A pilot plant case study

Abstract The paper reports the results of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions from aerobic and anoxic tank of a Sequential Batch Membrane Bioreactor (SB-MBR) pilot plant. The influence of salinity variation on N 2 O emission was analyzed by gradually increasing the inlet salt concentration from 0 to 10 g NaCl L −1 . The observed results showed that the N 2 O concentration of the gaseous samples was strongly influenced by the salt concentration. This result was likely related to a worsening of the nitrification activity due to the effect of salinity on autotrophic bacteria.
