Evaluation of two oxygen analyzers by computerized data acquisition and processing

Monitoring of inspired oxygen concentration during anesthesia with nitrous oxide is becoming accepted as essential. This type of monitoring demands accurate monitors that respond rapidly. We evaluated two such devices for their response patterns to rapid changes in oxygen concentration, a galvanic or "fuel cell" unit and a polarographic device. Data were stored after analog-to-digital conversion. The response patterns to stepwise changes in nitrous oxide and oxygen mixtures were recorded at flow rates ranging from 2 to 10 L/min. Greenhouse gas from moving bed based integrated fixed film activated sludge membrane bioreactors

The present paper reports the results of a nitrous oxide production investigation in a moving bed based integrated fixed film activated sludge (IFAS) membrane bioreactor (MBR) pilot plant designed in accordance with the UCT layout for biological phosphorous removal. Samples of gas and liquid were collected in order to measure the gaseous, as well as the dissolved concentration of N2O. Furthermore, the gas flow rate from each reactor was measured and the gas flux was estimated. The results confirmed that the anoxic reactor represents the main source of nitrous oxide production. Background: The volatile anesthetic sevoflurane exhibits neuroprotective properties when assessed for motor function and histopathology after cerebral ischemia in rats. Damage of hippocampal neurons after ischemia relates to a number of cognitive deficits that are not revealed by testing animals for motor function. Influence of Ketamine anaesthesia on renal and cardiovascular functions in mongrel dogs

Cardiac minute volume, renal blood flow, pulse volume, heart rate and urinary output were determined by means of experiments made on 10 mongrel dogs. Anaesthesia was maintained by nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture administered with Ketamine. Under the conditions described it was observed that -- contrary to what is found in human patients -- cardiac and renal minute volume as well as pulse volume are significantly decreased. No significant changes has been observed in the heart rate. Whilst urinary output was decreased, the excretion of individual electrolytes was found to be different.

A comprehensive integrated membrane bioreactor model for greenhouse gas emissions

Abstract A comprehensive integrated membrane bioreactor (MBR) model for wastewater treatment is here proposed. The model quantifies the main biological and physical processes. The model describes the biological removal of organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus including greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, CO 2 and nitrous oxide, N 2 O). Elucidation of Pathways for NO Electroreduction on Pt(111) from First Principles

The mechanism of nitric oxide electroreduction on Pt(111) is investigated using a combination of first principles calculations and electrokinetic rate theories. Barriers for chemical cleavage of N-O bonds on Pt(111) are found to be inaccessibly high at room temperature, implying that explicit electrochemical steps, along with the aqueous environment, play important roles in the experimentally observed formation of ammonia. Use of explicit water models, and associated determination of potential-dependent barriers based on Bulter-Volmer kinetics, demonstrate that ammonia is produced through a series of water-assisted protonation and bond dissociation steps at modest voltages (0.3 V).
