Cooperative phenomena and light-induced bistability in iron(II) spin-crossover compounds

1999

In iron(II) spin-crossover compounds, the transition from the 1A1 low-spin state at low temperatures to the 5T2 high-spin state at elevated temperatures is accompanied by a large increase in metal-ligand bond lengths. The resulting elastic interactions may be pictured as an internal pressure which is proportional to the concentration of the low-spin species. Because pressure stabilises the low-spin state relative to the high-spin state this results in a positive feedback. Thermal transition curves in neat iron(II) spin-crossover compounds are thus invariable much steeper than in diluted mixed crystals, and the high-spin→low-spin relaxation following the light-induced population of the high-…

Foundations of quantum mechanics and their impact on contemporary society

2018

Nearing a century since its inception, quantum mechanics is as lively as ever. Its signature manifestations, such as superposition, wave-particle duality, uncertainty principle, entanglement and nonlocality, were long confronted as weird predictions of an incomplete theory, paradoxes only suitable for philosophical discussions, or mere mathematical artifacts with no counterpart in the physical reality. Nevertheless, decades of progress in the experimental verification and control of quantum systems have routinely proven detractors wrong. While fundamental questions still remain wide open on the foundations and interpretations of quantum mechanics, its modern technological applications have …

Dynamics of correlations due to a phase noisy laser

2012

We analyze the dynamics of various kinds of correlations present between two initially entangled independent qubits, each one subject to a local phase noisy laser. We give explicit expressions of the relevant quantifiers of correlations for the general case of single-qubit unital evolution, which includes the case of a phase noisy laser. Although the light field is treated as classical, we find that this model can describe revivals of quantum correlations. Two different dynamical regimes of decay of correlations occur, a Markovian one (exponential decay) and a non-Markovian one (oscillatory decay with revivals) depending on the values of system parameters. In particular, in the non-Markovia…

On Fučík type spectrum for problem with integral nonlocal boundary condition

2019

The Fučík equation x' '= -μ x+λ x- with two types of nonlocal boundary value conditions are considered. The Fučík type spectrum for both problems are constructed. The visualization of the spectrum for some values of parameter γ is provided.

An optimized Bell test in a dynamical system

2010

The best realization of a Bell test depends on parameters linked to experimental settings. We report, for a class of two-qubit states, some optimized parameters that are useful to perform an optimized Bell test in a dynamical context. The time evolution of these optimized parameters, that present finite jumps, is investigated for two qubits in separated cavities.

Mechanically Based Nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli Beam Model

2014

AbstractThis paper presents a nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli beam model. It is assumed that the equilibrium of a beam segment is attained because of the classical local stress resultants, along with long-range volume forces and moments exchanged by the beam segment with all the nonadjacent beam segments. Elastic long-range volume forces/moments are considered, built as linearly depending on the product of the volumes of the interacting beam segments and on generalized measures of their relative motion, based on the pure deformation modes of the beam. Attenuation functions governing the space decay of the nonlocal effects are introduced. The motion equations are derived in an integro-differential …

An energy residual-based approach to gradient effects within the mechanics of generalized continua

2012

AbstractGeneralized continua exhibiting gradient effects are addressed through a method grounded on the energy residual (ER)-based gradient theory by the first author and coworkers. A main tool of this theory is the Clausius-Duhem inequality cast in a form differing from the classical one only by a nonstandard extra term, the (nonlocality) ER, required to satisfy the insulation condition (its global value has to vanish or to take a known value). The ER carries in the nonlocality features of the mechanical problem through a strain-like rate field, being the specific nonlocality source, and a concomitant higher-order long-range stress (or microstress) field. The thermodynamic restrictions on …

Tree-Loop Duality Relation beyond simple poles

2013

We develop the Tree-Loop Duality Relation for two- and three-loop integrals with multiple identical propagators (multiple poles). This is the extension of the Duality Relation for single poles and multi-loop integrals derived in previous publications. We prove a generalization of the formula for single poles to multiple poles and we develop a strategy for dealing with higher-order pole integrals by reducing them to single pole integrals using Integration By Parts.

Nonlocality and fluctuations near the optical analog of a sonic horizon

2013

We consider the behavior of fluctuations near the sonic horizon and the role of the nonlocality of interaction (nonlinearity) on their regularization. The nonlocality dominates if its characteristic length scale is larger than the regularization length. The influence of nonlocality may be important in the current experiments on the transonic flow in Kerr nonlinear media. Experimental conditions, under which the observation of straddled fluctuations can be observed, are discussed.
