Master´s thesis in Advanced Teacher Education Background: Idioms can be considered as an interesting, but complex linguistic phenomena, which occurs frequently both in written and spoken language. Idioms can be found in a variety of different texts, such as papers, debates, speaks etc. Despite being frequent in the language, little attention has been paid to idioms in school and in the Norwegian subject in high school. Master's thesis in Advanced teacher education level 8-13 (NO505) In this thesis I have examined the use of dialect in nine people of three different generations from Grimstad city centre. I selected six linguistic variables that I wanted to examine more closely; three phonological variables (r-sound, lenis plosivesand retroflex) and three morphological variables (personal pronoun 1st person singular, verb ending in present tense and adverbs of negation). The basis for this study is my observation of variations in the use of these traits, especially between different generations.
