Randomized clinical trial of a new cyanoacrylate flexible tissue adhesive (Adhflex) for repairing surgical wounds

2016

The use of synthetic adhesives such as cyanoacrylates for closing surgical wounds remains controversial. In a multicenter, prospective and randomized clinical trial, we compared a new cyanoacrylate elastic tissue adhesive, Adhflex, with standard suturing methods for repairing surgical wounds. Sixty patients who underwent surgery for inguinal hernia were randomly chosen for Adhflex or standard silk suture. We evaluated wound closure time and parameters related to wound healing and complications using the Hollander Scale; overall surgeon, patient, and independent evaluator satisfaction with scar appearance using a visual analog scale; and scar cosmesis and cosmetic outcome using the Patient a…

Hyperinsulinemia, hyperproinsulinemia and insulin resistance in the metabolic syndrome.

1996

For better comprehension of the metabolic syndrome, it is necessary to differentiate the effect of insulin on glucose metabolism on the one hand, and on other metabolic activities on the other hand. Whereas glucose utilization is affected by insulin resistance, the effect of insulin on lipid metabolism, ion and aminoacid transport does not seem to be diminished. Lipid metabolism, however, seems to play a crucial role in the induction of the vicious cycle. Increased energy and fat ingestion may be due to an increased number of galanin secreting cells in the hypothalamus. The excessive fat intake results in an increased rate of release of insulin and increased influx of triglycerides into the…

The European multicenter cohort study on cyanoacrylate embolization of refluxing great saphenous veins

2014

ObjectiveCyanoacrylate (CA) embolization of refluxing great saphenous veins (GSVs) has been previously described. The outcomes from a multicenter study are still lacking.MethodsA prospective multicenter study was conducted in seven centers in four European countries to abolish GSV reflux by endovenous CA embolization. Neither tumescent anesthesia nor postinterventional compression stockings were used. Varicose tributaries remained untreated until at least 3 months after the index treatment. Clinical examination, quality of life assessment, and duplex ultrasound evaluation were performed at 2 days and after 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.ResultsIn 70 patients, of whom 68 (97.1%) were available for 1…

Transcatheter embolization of the kidney with butyl-2-cyanoacrylate: Experimental and clinical results

1978

The technique and efficacy of therapeutic catheter embolization of the kidney with butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (Histoacryl) were studied in 80 rabbits (including control groups) and in 10 dogs. A mixture of butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, 50% glucose, and tantalum powder was used for the embolization. Complete and permanent vascular occlusion was found in nearly all cases. The main complication observed was a reflux of embolizing material into the lumbar arteries, which occurred in seven rabbits. Clinically, therapeutic embolization was performed in six patients with hypernephroma. The indication for embolization in these patients, as well as in two others with iatrogenic lesions, was pronounced hematuria…

Oral melanoacanthoma and oral melanotic macule: a report of 8 cases, review of the literature, and immunohistochemical analysis.

2007

Oral melanoacanthoma (MA) is a rare, benign pigmented lesion, similar to cutaneous MA, characterized by hyperplasia of spinous keratinocytes and dendritic melanocytes. The pathogenesis of oral MA remains uncertain, although its clinical behavior is suggestive of a reactive origin. The most common intraoral sites are the buccal mucosa, lip, palate and gingiva. The average age of presentation is 28 years, mainly in blacks, with a strong female predilection. The oral melanotic macule (MM) is a small, well-circumscribed brown-to-black macule that occurs on the lips and mucous membranes. The etiology is not clear and it may represent a physiologic or reactive process. The average age of presenta…

Apolar versus polar solvents: a comparison of the strength of some organic acids against different bases in toluene and in water

2010

The constants of ion-pair formation with 3-nitroaniline (3NO(2)A) for eight halogenoacetic acids (HAAs, 3a-h: TFA, TCA, TBA, DFA, DCA, DBA, MCA, and MBA), and five 2,2-dichloroalkanoic acids containing 3-8 carbon atoms (HAs, 5a-e: DCPA, DCBA, DCMBA, DCVA, and DCOA) have been determined in TOL at 298.1 K. The results obtained brought to evidence for HAAs the formation of ion-pairs with two different stoichiometries (base-acid, 1:1 or 1:2), while in contrast the HAs furnish only the 1:1 pairs. The different steric and electronic requirements of HAAs and HAs seem to be responsible for such an unlikely behavior. At the same time, the acid-catalyzed MRH of the (Z)-phenylhydrazone of 5-amino-3-be…

Synthesis and Holographic Properties of Alkyl 2-Cyanoacetate Acceptor Fragment Containing Push – Pull Type Organic Glasses

2015

We present synthesis, optical and holographic properties of original structure organic glasses based on compounds consisting of three fragments: of N,N-bis(2-(trityloxy)ethyl)-4-vinylaniline or N,N-bis(5,5,5-triphenylpentyl)-4-vinylaniline fragments as electron donating fragment (D), 4H-pyran-4-ylidene fragment as linker(π) and of 2-(trityloxy)ethyl 2-cyanoacetate or 5,5,5-triphenylpentyl 2-cyanoacetate as acceptor (A) fragment. These push-pull (D- π-A) type molecular compounds show good solubility in non-polar solvents (CHCl3 or CH2Cl2) and neat thin films with sufficient optical qualities have been obtained by spin-coating technique. Maxima of UV–VIS absorption in dichloromethane solution…

Characterization and transcription studies of a phytochelatin synthase gene from the solitary tunicate Ciona intestinalis exposed to cadmium.

2014

The major thiol-containing molecules involved in controlling the level of intracellular ROS in eukaryotes, acting as a nonenzymatic detoxification system, are metallothioneins (MTs), glutathione (GSH) and phytochelatins (PCs). Both MTs and GSH are well-known in the animal kingdom. PC was considered a prerogative of the plant kingdom but, in 2001, a phytochelatin synthase (PCS) gene was described in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans; additional genes encoding this enzyme were later described in the earthworm Eisenia fetida and in the parasitic nematode Schistosoma mansoni but scanty data are available, up to now, for Deuterostomes. Here, we describe the molecular characteristics and transc…
