Objective— Labeled oxidation-specific antibodies (Ox-AB) detect, quantify, and noninvasively image lipid-rich atherosclerotic lesions. 5-HT3 receptor-channels coupled with Na+ influx in human T cells: role in T cell activation.

The study was conducted on a human (Jurkat) T cell line, loaded with a Na+ fluorescent probe, SBFI/AM. Serotonin and an agonist of 5-HT3 receptor-channels, 2-methyl-5HT, evoked Na+ influx, whereas the agonists of other serotonergic receptor subtypes, i.e., 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B receptors, failed to induce Na+ influx in these cells. By using 3H-BRL43694, an agonist of 5-HT3 receptor-channels, we characterized 5-HT3 lymphocyte receptors which exhibited a density (Bmax) of 300 +/- 20 fmol/10(6) cells and a Kd of 30 nM in Jurkat T cells. Urban forests are regularly managed for human safety and aesthetic reasons, but they are crucial habitat for many species. Removals of undergrowth occur commonly in these forests, yet the ecological consequences of these operations are poorly understood. We sampled ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) and vascular plants along 20-m edge gradients in Finnish urban forests, in five stands treated 0.5−2.5 years earlier with undergrowth removal and in five untreated stands. Multiplicity results for a class of asymmetric weakly coupled systems of second order ordinary differential equations

We prove the existence and multiplicity of solutions to a two-point boundary value problem associated to a weakly coupled system of asymmetric second-order equations. Applying a classical change of variables, we transform the initial problem into an equivalent problem whose solutions can be characterized by their nodal properties. The proof is developed in the framework of the shooting methods and it is based on some estimates on the rotation numbers associated to each component of the solutions to the equivalent system.

Abstract Let Y be a smooth, projective complex curve of genus g ⩾ 1. Let d be an integer ⩾ 3, let e = {e1, e2,..., er} be a partition of d and let | e | = Σi=1r(ei − 1). In this paper we study the Hurwitz spaces which parametrize coverings of degree d of Y branched in n points of which n − 1 are points of simple ramification and one is a special point whose local monodromy has cyclic type e and furthermore the coverings have full monodromy group Sd. We prove the irreducibility of these Hurwitz spaces when n − 1 + | e | ⩾ 2d, thus generalizing a result of Graber, Harris and Starr [A note on Hurwitz schemes of covers of a positive genus curve, Preprint, math. AG/0205056].
