Generalizations of Clausen's formula and algebraic transformations of Calabi-Yau differential equations

2011

AbstractWe provide certain unusual generalizations of Clausen's and Orr's theorems for solutions of fourth-order and fifth-order generalized hypergeometric equations. As an application, we present several examples of algebraic transformations of Calabi–Yau differential equations.

Influence of initial treatments of aluminium on the morphological features of electrochemically formed alumina membranes

2003

Abstract The fabrication of alumina membranes by electrochemical oxidation of annealed aluminium was investigated. Porous layers were grown in 0.4 M H3PO4 at −1 and 5 °C at different anodising times. The morphology of the outer surface was found to be dependent on temperature and charge density, with both determining the extent of chemical dissolution of the anodic oxide. The inner-surface morphology was found to depend on the applied voltage only. The chemical dissolution rate of anodic oxide grown on annealed aluminium was found to be lower than that formed on unannealed aluminium under otherwise identical conditions. Such a difference in behaviour is explained in terms of a higher finish…

On the nature of phase separation in a commercial aluminium-lithium alloy

1996

Abstract The formation of lithium-rich precipitate particles, known as δ′ phase, is responsible for the particularly desirable mechanical properties which make aluminium-lithium alloys interesting for different industrial applications. The structure and the kinetics of the phase separation process are conveniently studied by small-angle X-ray scattering, though uncertainties remain on the actual shape of the phase diagram of the system, particularly in the region of interest. In this paper are reported small-angle X-ray scattering measurements on a commercial AlLi (8.49% Li atoms) both in the region of formation of the precipitate and during its successive growth. Modelling of the experime…

The Effect of Electronic Properties of Anodized and Hard Anodized Ti and Ti6Al4V on Their Reactivity in Simulated Body Fluid

2022

The electronic properties of barrier and porous layers on Ti and Ti6Al4V were studied. Barrier anodic oxides grown to 40 V on Ti and on Ti6Al4V are both n-type semiconductors with a band gap of 3.3 eV and 3.4 eV respectively, in agreement with the formation of amorphous TiO2. Anodizing to 200 V at 20 mA cm−2 in calcium acetate and β-glycerol phosphate disodium pentahydrate leads to the formation of Ca and P containing porous films with a photoelectrochemical behaviour dependent on the metallic substrate. A band gap of 3.2 eV and the flat band potential of −0.5 V vs Ag/AgCl were measured for the porous oxide on Ti, while optical transitions at 2.15 eV and a significantly more positive flat b…

Sensor Mining for User Behavior Profiling in Intelligent Environments

2011

The proposed system exploits sensor mining methodologies to profile user behaviors patterns in an intelligent workplace. The work is based in the assumption that users’ habit profiles are implicitly described by sensory data, which explicitly show the consequences of users’ actions over the environment state. Sensor data are analyzed in order to infer relationships of interest between environmental variables and the user, detecting in this way behavior profiles. The system is designed for a workplace equipped in the context of Sensor9k, a project carried out at the Department of Computer Science of Palermo University.

Characterization of Thin Passive Film-Electrolyte Junctions. The Amorphous Semiconductor (a-SC) Schottky Barrier Approach.

2017

A detailed study of the electronic properties of thin (< 20 nm) anodic TiO2 potentiostatically grown on titanium in two different solutions is presented. The results show that the nature of the anodizing solution affects the electronic properties of the anodic film and in particular the density of electronic state (DOS) distribution. Different DOS were derived from the experimental data analyzed according to the theory of amorphous semiconductor (a-SC) Schottky barrier. It is shown that the usual non-linear and frequency dependent Mott-Schottky plots are in agreement with expected theoretical behaviour of a-SC Schottky barrier. It is shown the importance of the DOS distribution in determini…

How self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules can generate complexity in the nanoscale

2015

Abstract Given the importance of nanomaterials and nanostructures in modern technology, in the past decades much effort has been directed to set up efficient bottom up protocols for the piloted self-assembly of molecules. However, molecules are generally disinclined to adopt the desired structural organization because they behave according to their own specific intermolecular interactions. Thus, only some selected classes of chemical compounds are capable to lead to useful self-assembled structures. Amphiphiles, simultaneously possessing polar and apolar moieties within their molecular architecture, can give a wide scenario of possible intermolecular interactions: polar–polar, polar–apolar,…

Cercarial Production of the Trematode Rhipidocotyle fennica in Clams Kept in the Field

1998

The numbers of cercariae that trematodes produce have been previously investigated in the laboratory but not in the field. I studied cercarial production of the bucephalid trematode Rhipidocotyle fennica in the freshwater unionid clam Anodonta piscinalis kept under natural conditions. Naturally infected clams (n = 180) were collected and marked in early June 1996. Every 14 days, starting from the collection date and ending in October, these clams were taken to the laboratory where they were monitored for the emergence of trematode cercariae. Between monitoring dates, the clams were returned to the collection site. From a random subsample of infected clams (n = 12), the number of cercariae p…
