Plume composition and volatile flux from Nyamulagira volcano
2015
Nyamulagira, in the Virunga volcanic province (VVP), Democratic Republic of Congo, is one of the most active volcanoes in Africa. The volcano is located about 25 km north-northwest of Lake Kivu in the Western Branch of the East African Rift System (EARS). The activity is characterized by frequent eruptions (on average, one eruption every 2–4 years) which occur both from the summit crater and from the flanks (31 flank eruptions over the last 110 years). Due to the peculiar low viscosity of its lava and its location in the floor of the rift, Nyamulagira morphology is characterized by a wide lava field that covers over 1100 km2 and contains more than 100 flank cones. Indeed, Nyamulagira is a S…
Environmental impact of volcanic emissions at Nyiragongo (DRC)
2015
The large amount of trace elements emitted from volcanoes has a strong impact on the close surrounding areas. Nyiragongo Volcano (Democratic Republic of Congo) belongs to the Virunga volcanic chain and is one of the most active volcanoes in Africa. It is characterized by the presence of an active and permanent lava lake with a persistent degassing activity. During a field trip in October-November 2014, we investigated the impact of the volcanogenic deposition in the surrounding of the crater by using different sampling techniques. Rain-gauges were used to collect atmospheric bulk deposition. Active and passive biomonitoring techniques (moss-bags and leaves of endemic plants – Senecio spp. a…
Quantum wire with periodic serial structure
1991
Electron wave motion in a quantum wire with periodic structure is treated by direct solution of the Schr\"odinger equation as a mode-matching problem. Our method is particularly useful for a wire consisting of several distinct units, where the total transfer matrix for wave propagation is just the product of those for its basic units. It is generally applicable to any linearly connected serial device, and it can be implemented on a small computer. The one-dimensional mesoscopic crystal recently considered by Ulloa, Casta\~no, and Kirczenow [Phys. Rev. B 41, 12 350 (1990)] is discussed with our method, and is shown to be a strictly one-dimensional problem. Electron motion in the multiple-stu…
Effects of mechanical deformation on electronic transport through multiwall carbon nanotubes
2017
Abstract The effects of mechanical deformation on the electron transport behavior of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are of primary interest due to the enormous potential of nanotubes in making electronic devices and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). Moreover it could help to evaluate the presence of defects or to assess the type of CNTs that were produced. Conventional atomistic simulations have a high computational expense that limits the size of the CNTs that can be studied with this technique and a direct analysis of CNTs of the dimension used in nano-electronic devices seems prohibitive at the present. Here a novel approach was designed to realize orders-of-magnitude savings in computation…

A new invariant-based method for building biomechanical behavior laws - Application to an anisotropic hyperelastic material with two fiber families
2013
Abstract In this article, we present a general constructive and original approach that allows us to calculate the invariants associated with an anisotropic hyperelastic material made of two families of collagen fibers. This approach is based on mathematical techniques from the theory of invariants: • Definition of the material symmetry group. • Analytical calculation of a set of generators using the Noether’s theorem. • Analytical calculation of an integrity basis. • Comparison between the proposed invariants and the classical ones.
Evolutionary ecology of the trans-generational immune priming in an insect
2012
Trans-generational immune priming (TGIP) is defined as the plastic enhancement of offspring's immunocompetence following an immune challenge of the females of the parental generation. In vertebrates, this phenomenon is well described, and is achieved by the maternal transfer of antibodies. In invertebrates however, it has only recently been described. Since invertebrates do not possess antibodies, the mechanism of this transmission remains unknown. If the offspring is exposed to the maternal infection, an elevated immunocompetence can help it cope better with it. Nonetheless, apart from this benefit, several cues indicate that the TGIP bears some fitness costs for individuals. The evolution…
