Light-dependent CK2-mediated phosphorylation of centrins regulates complex formation with visual G-protein.

AbstractCentrins are Ca2+-binding EF-hand proteins. All four known centrin isoforms are expressed in the ciliary apparatus of photoreceptor cells. Cen1p and Cen2p bind to the visual G-protein transducin in a strictly Ca2+-dependent way, which is thought to regulate light driven movements of transducin between photoreceptor cell compartments. These relatively slow motile processes represent a novel paradigm in light adaptation of photoreceptor cells.Here we validated specific phosphorylation as a novel regulator of centrins in photoreceptors. Nanoparticle-Directed Metal–Organic Framework/Porous Organic Polymer Monolithic Supports for Flow-Based Applications

A two-step nanoparticle-directed route for the preparation of macroporous polymer monoliths for which the pore surface is covered with a metal–organic framework (MOF) coating has been developed to facilitate the use of MOFs in flow-based applications. The flow-through monolithic matrix was prepared in a column format from a polymerization mixture containing ZnO-nanoparticles. Trace elements mobility in soils from the active hydrothermal area of Nisyros (Greece)

Nisyros Island, Greece, is a stratovolcano known for its intense hydrothermal activity. On June 2013, during a multidisciplinary field campaign, soil samples were collected in the caldera area to determinate the main mineralogical paragenesis and to investigate the distribution of trace elements concentrations and the possible relationship to the contribution of deep originated fluids. Mercury fluxes from volcanic and geothermal sources: An update

OVSICORI, IAMC-CNR We review the state of knowledge on global volcanogenic Hg emissions to the atmosphere and present new data from seven active volcanoes (Poás, Rincón de la Vieja, Turrialba, Aso, Mutnovsky, Gorely and Etna) and two geothermal fields (Las Pailas and Las Hornillas). The variability of Hg contents (c. 4-125 ng m-3) measured in gaseous emissions reflects the dynamic nature of volcanic plumes, where the abundances of volatiles are determined by the physical nature of degassing and variable air dilution. The geodynamics of the central Mediterranean is characterized by the interaction between the European plate and the African’s. In this setting Sicily is a sector of the Appenine-Maghrebide accretionary prism, which is located between two areas affected by extensional tectonics (Sicily Channel to the south and the Thyrrenian back arc basin to the north). Significant mantle-derived helium (0.4<R/Ra<2.8; R=3He/4He in the sample, Ra in atmosphere) is found in the CH4 and N2-CO2 rich fluids released in central western Sicily, a region without evidence of recent magmatism.
