Inhibitory effects of okadaic acid on rat uterine contractile responses to different spasmogens

In the present study, we examined the effects of okadaic acid, a selective inhibitor of type I and 2A protein phosphatases, on the mechanical responses evoked by oxytocin, K + - and Na + -modified solutions and ouabain in estrogen-primed rat myometrium. Oxytocin elicited a rapid, phasic contraction followed by rhythmic oscillations. The phasic response was partially resistant to the absence of external Ca 2+ . Okadaic acid (1 μM) and the L-type calcium channel blocker nifedipine (1 μM) abolished the oscillatory component and reduced the initial, phasic response to about 80% of the control response. We aimed to assess the temperature distribution in the cryolesion during hepatic cryotherapy and the association with postoperative histological changes to optimise the technique and allow better preoperative planning. Hepatic cryolesions were produced in 22 pigs following laparotomy using a CMS-cryosystem and 8mm-AccuProbe-Cryoprobes. The temperature was measured in 1 min intervals at different distances from the probe during freezing. We found that variants carrying the A allele (CA and AA) for the C4887A polymorphism have a significantly higher degree of estrogen catabolism and lower femoral BMD. In 96 patients (ductal pancreatic carcinoma, n = 34; periampullary carcinoma, n = 43; chronic pancreatitis, n = 19) the role of CA 19-9 in the diagnosis of lesions of the head of the pancreas were evaluated. The sensitivity for ductal pancreatic carcinoma was 73.3%, for periampullary carcinoma 48.8%, and specificity was 63.2%. Carcinoembryonic antigen was elevated only in every fifth patient. Even when combining the two tumor markers no increase in sensitivity could be observed. The low specificity of 63%, which decreased to 33% in the case of obstructive jaundice, does not allow adequate preoperative differentiation between cancer patients and those with chronic pancreatitis. Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is a chronic condition characterized by frequent episodes of collapse of upper airways during sleep. Prevalence of the disease is settled at about 3–7%. Today, palatal surgery is a reference point in OSAHS treatment and there are many different surgical techniques. The purpose of our work is to compare post-operative results of palate surgery techniques used in our practice in OSAHS patients, studying the degree of patients’ satisfaction with a recent score recommended by Rashwan et al. called PPOPS (Palate Post-Operative Problems Score).
