EFFECT OF SUBMARINE ACOUSTIC NOISE IN JUVENILE SEA BREAM (SPARUS AURATA) AND MUSSELS (MYTILUS GALLOPROVINCIALIS)

2018

The earth’ resources are running out, the population will increase and further sources will be needed. These, were found in the deep ocean. To date the mining activities (Deep Sea Mining, DSM) they have not started. One impact of DSM could be underwater noise. Considering the noise frequencies of anthropic activities in the ocean, and the European directive on underwater noise control, we stressed the animals with four acoustic 1/3 band noises around: 63 Hz, 125 Hz, 500 Hz, 1kHz. We study the effects on Sparus aurata juveniles, and on Mytilus galloprovincialis. We will analyse behavioural., molecular and biochemical responses Los recursos de la tierra se están agotando, la población aumenta…

Preference for Fractal-Scaling Properties Across Synthetic Noise Images and Artworks

2018

A large number of studies support the notion that synthetic images within a certain intermediate fractal-scaling range possess an intrinsic esthetic value. Interestingly, the fractal-scaling properties that define this intermediate range have also been found to characterize a vast collection of representational, abstract, and graphic art. While some have argued that these statistic properties only serve to maximize the visibility of the artworks’ spatial structure, others argue that they are intrinsically tied to the artworks’ esthetic appeal. In this study, we bring together these two threads of research and make a direct comparison between visual preference for varying fractal-scaling cha…

Modified total variation regularization using fuzzy complement for image denoising

2015

In this paper, we propose a denoising algorithm based on the Total Variation (TV) model. Specifically, we associate to the regularization term of the Rodin-Osher-Fatimi (ROF) functional a small weight whenever denoising is performed in edge and texture regions, which means less regularization and more details preservation. On the other hand, a large weight is associated if the region being filtered is smooth which means noise will be well suppressed. The weight computation is inspired from the fuzzy edge complement. Experiments on well-known images and comparison with state of the art denoising algorithms demonstrate that the proposed method not only presents good denoising performance but …

A social survey on the effects of environmental noise on the residents of Pamplona, Spain

1998

Abstract An extensive noise survey carried out in the city of Pamplona, Spain over 2 years has allowed us to elaborate a detailed daytime acoustic map of this city. The degree of noise annoyance in the community and its relationship with the measured noise levels has also been studied by means of a social survey.

Temporal loudness weights in background noise: Data and models

2019

Previous studies consistently showed that human listeners primarily consider the beginning of a time-varying sound when judging its overall loudness, and place less weight on subsequent temporal portions. However, all experiments studying this primacy effect in temporal loudness weights presented the target sound in quiet. Here, we compared temporal weights when the target sound was either presented in quiet or in a continuous background noise, and for a variation in the level of the target sound across a range of 60 dB. The target sound was a time-varying narrowband noise, the background noise was a continuous bandpass-filtered noise. In all conditions, we observed the expected primacy eff…

Sound Event Envelope Estimation in Polyphonic Mixtures

2019

Sound event detection is the task of identifying automatically the presence and temporal boundaries of sound events within an input audio stream. In the last years, deep learning methods have established themselves as the state-of-the-art approach for the task, using binary indicators during training to denote whether an event is active or inactive. However, such binary activity indicators do not fully describe the events, and estimating the envelope of the sounds could provide more precise modeling of their activity. This paper proposes to estimate the amplitude envelopes of target sound event classes in polyphonic mixtures. For training, we use the amplitude envelopes of the target sounds…

Seismo-stratigraphic model of “La Bandita” area in the Palermo Plain (Sicily, Italy) through HVSR inversion constrained by stratigraphic data

2018

Ambient noise Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) technique is commonly used approach to obtain 1D models of the shear-wave velocity in the shallow surface of an investigated area. However, obtained models can have a wide margin of uncertainty if inversions have not been appropriately constrained by detailed stratigraphic information. An application of HVSR inversion constrained by lithostratigraphic data is presented in order to verify the effectiveness of this technique for purposes of geological and geophysical reconstruction of a sedimentary basin in a densely urbanized area. This is often the case of seismic microzonation studies, in which almost all the information derives fr…

Comparative tests on different multi-electrode arrays using models in near-surface geophysics

2008

In this paper, the response of different synthetic models to geoelectrical multi-electrode surveys is studied. The models considered are related to two main problems, which are very common in geophysical research regarding hydrogeology and engineering. The first class of models represents buried walls, similar archaeological remains or remains of buried foundations; the other class corresponds to a sea-water intrusion of a fresh water aquifer, which is generally studied in hydrogeophysics. A set of 2D simulations, starting from the synthetic models, was carried out to compare the behaviour of the different arrays when acquiring measurements of electrical resistivity tomography. For each mod…

The Impact of Green Roofs on the Parameters of the Environment in Urban Areas—Review

2019

This study presents the results of a review of publications conducted by researchers in a variety of climates on the implementation of ‘green roofs’ and their impact on the urban environment. Features of green roofs in urban areas have been characterized by a particular emphasis on: Filtration of air pollutants and oxygen production, reduction of rainwater volume discharged from roof surfaces, reduction of so-called ‘urban heat islands’, as well as improvements to roof surface insulation (including noise reduction properties). The review of the publications confirmed the necessity to conduct research to determine the coefficients of the impact of green roofs on the environment in the city c…
