Background noise suppression for acoustic localization by means of an adaptive energy detection approach

2008

A microphone array can be employed to localize dominant acoustic sources in a given noisy environment. This capability is successfully used in good signal to noise ratio (SNR) conditions but its accuracy decreases considerably in the presence of other background noise sources. In order to counteract this effect, a novel approach that combines the information provided by a Gaussian energy detector (GED) with the approved localization method SRP-PHAT is presented in this paper. To evaluate the presented technique, several acoustic sources (speech and impulsive sounds) were considered in a variety of different scenarios to demonstrate the robustness and the accuracy of the system proposed.

Design and implementation of a long-range low-power wake-up radio for IoT devices

2019

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of an on-demand wake-up radio (WuR) for long-range wireless IoT devices to reduce the power consumption, thereby increasing the life time of the devices. A custom narrow-band (NB) low noise amplifier is designed and implemented for WuR. The low-noise amplifier achieves a gain of 31 dB at 1 mA current consumption from a 6 V power supply. The WuR achieves a sensivity of -80 dBm by consuming just 1 mA, thereby optimizing the energy consumption of battery powered long-range IoT devices, hence reducing the power consumption and overall costs when deployed in large scale.

Using coded excitation to maintain signal to noise for FMC+TFM on attenuating materials

2019

Ultrasonic Non-Destructive Evaluation using Full Matrix Capture (FMC) and Total Focusing Method (TFM) is used for high resolution imaging as every pixel is in optimal focus. FMC excites one element in turn, so operates with lower transmitted energy compared to phased array beamforming. The energy at a reflector is further reduced by the broad directivity pattern of the single element. The large number of Tx/Rx A-scans that contribute to each pixel recover the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) in the final TFM image. Maintaining this in the presence of attenuating materials is a challenge because relevant information in each A-scan signal is buried in the thermal noise, and the TFM process assumes…

Robust Transmit Beamforming for Underlay D2D Communications on Multiple Channels

2020

Underlay device-to-device (D2D) communications lead to improvement in spectral efficiency by simultaneously allowing direct communication between the users and the existing cellular transmission. However, most works in resource allocation for D2D communication have considered single antenna transmission and with a focus on perfect channel state information (CSI). This work formulates a robust transmit beamforming design problem for maximizing the aggregate rate of all D2D pairs and cellular users (CUs). Assuming complex Gaussian distributed CSI error, our formulation guarantees probabilistically a signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) above a specified threshold. In addition, we al…

Reliable Underlay D2D Communications over Multiple Transmit Antenna Framework

2020

Robust beamforming is an efficient technique to guarantee the desired receiver performance in the presence of erroneous channel state information (CSI). However, the application of robust beamforming in underlay device-to-device (D2D) communication still requires further investigation. In this paper, we investigate resource allocation problem for underlay D2D communications by considering multiple antennas at the base station (BS) and at the transmitters of D2D pairs. The proposed design problem aims at maximizing the aggregate rate of all D2D pairs and cellular users (CUs) in downlink spectrum. In addition, our objective is augmented to achieve a fair allocation of resources across the D2D…

Contribution of HVSR measures for seismic microzonation studies

2018

The HVSR method applied to seismic noise can be a very useful technique to map the site effects of the territory, to identify the thickness of the soft covering and so the depth of the seismic bedrock. The case of the urban area of Oliveri is presented. Because of its high seismic hazard this area has been subject of first level seismic microzonation. The town lies on a large coastal plain made of mixed fluvial/marine sediments, overlapping a deformed substrate. In order to identify points on the area probably suffering of relevant site effects and to define a preliminary Vs subsurface model, 23 HVSR measurements were performed. A clustering technique of continuous signals has been used to …

In continuous flash suppression (CFS), a dynamic noise masker, presented to one eye, suppresses conscious perception of a test stimulus, presented to the other eye, until the suppressed stimulus comes to awareness after few seconds. But what do we see breaking the dominance of the masker in the transition period? We addressed this question with a dual-task in which observers indicated (i) whether the test object was left or right of the fixation mark (localization) and (ii) whether it was a face or a house (categorization). As done recently (Stein et al., 2011), we used two experimental varieties to rule out confounds with decisional strategy. In the terminated mode, stimulus and masker wer…

Advancing cyanobacteria biomass estimation from hyperspectral observations: Demonstrations with HICO and PRISMA imagery

2021

Retrieval of the phycocyanin concentration (PC), a characteristic pigment of, and proxy for, cyanobacteria biomass, from hyperspectral satellite remote sensing measurements is challenging due to uncertainties in the remote sensing reflectance (?R) resulting from atmospheric correction and instrument radiometric noise. Although several individual algorithms have been proven to capture local variations in cyanobacteria biomass in specific regions, their performance has not been assessed on hyperspectral images from satellite sensors. Our work leverages a machine-learning model, Mixture Density Networks (MDNs), trained on a large (N = 939) dataset of collocated in situ chlorophyll-a concentrat…

2D ECG Image Based Biometric Identification Using Stacked Autoencoders

2021

The handcrafted features extraction methods have achieved remarkable results in ECG based biometric identification. However, they are sensitive to many factors: (1) intra and inter-individual variability, (2) heart rate variability, (3) powerline interference, baseline wander and muscle artifacts. To deal with these issues, deep learning approaches have been proposed to extract automatically the important features almost from original data without any preprocessing step (i.e., The original ECG signal mostly contains noise). Unlike conventional ECG based biometric approaches, which based either on fiducial and non-fiducial methods, the proposed approach can be implemented on end to end syste…
