The role of peer groups in adolescents' educational trajectories
2009
The present study investigated whether the members of adolescents' peer groups show similar educational trajectories from comprehensive school to either senior secondary or vocational education, and to what extent their educational expectations, academic achievement, family structure, and parents' SES predict these trajectories. Five hundred thirty adolescents filled in a questionnaire focusing on their educational expectations, academic achievement and family background variables before the transition to post-comprehensive education. They were also asked to nominate three peers with whom they most liked to spend their time. After the transition, they reported the school form they were in. …
Selecting and Retaining Friends on the Basis of Cigarette Smoking Similarity
2013
This study examines whether friend selection, deselection, and socialization differ as a function of the level of cigarette smoking in the friendship group. A total of 1419 students (median age = 16) from upper secondary and vocational schools in Finland were included as targets in the peer network. Targets in the peer network were asked to nominate friends and describe their own cigarette smoking at two time points one year apart. Network analyses revealed similarity arising from selection and deselection on the basis of smoking. Selection effects (i.e., selecting new friends based on similarity) were stronger for adolescents in low-smoking groups. Deselection effects (i.e., dropping frien…
The Palaeontological heritage of Ribeira de Cacela (Algarve, Portugal). Its preservation in the Portuguese context
2021
The protection of palaeontological heritage is justified by its own specificity, which results from its limited visibility, spatial variability, irreproducibility and importance as a record of past biodiversity. Until the present in Portugal the laws concerning the preservation of natural areas are focused mainly on the protection of threatened living species and their habitats, neglecting any geological aspect, and even less the concept of palaeontological heritage. The present analysis refers to the fossil-site of Ribeira de Cacela, included in the Natural Park of Ria Formosa (Algarve, southern Portugal), which represents a site of great paleontological interest. No particular palaeontolo…
Giuliano e i nova negotia: sulla tutela dei c.d. contratti innominati tra l’età traianea e l’età dei Severi
2021
The study deals with Julian's thought on the protection of innominate contracts. In this regard, the idea is widespread that the jurist was opposed to an enlargement of the contractual sphere beyond the figures recognized at the edictal level. This conviction is based primarily on Ulp. 4 ad ed. D. 2.14.7.2, well-known testimony in which Julian is reprimanded by Maurician and Ulpian for having granted an action in factum about a case of eviction, for which, according to both jurists his successors, he could have acted with the actio civilis incerti. The study disputes this idea and comes to the conclusion rather than to determine Julian’s solution of Ulp. 4 ad ed. it was a functional (or eco…
When empathy matters: the role of sex and empathy in close friendships
2017
Based on prior theory and research (Ciarrochi & Heaven, 2009; Eagly & Wood, 1999), we hypothesized that the link between empathy and friendship would be moderated by sex: Girls will nominate empathic boys as friends, whereas boys will not tend to nominate empathic girls. We collected measures of empathy, friendship social support, and close friendship nominations in grade 10 across 1,970 students in 16 schools (Mage = 15.70, SD = .44; males = 993, females = 977). Multilevel models revealed that boys high in cognitive empathy attracted an average of 1.8 more girl friendship nominations than did their low empathy counterparts, whereas empathic girls did not attract a greater number of opposit…
Paul. 32 ad ed. D.19.4.1.1: permuta ed evizione in un noto testo paolino
2012
The present work deals with D.19.4.1.1, text in which Paul seems to grant an actio in factum pretoria (Gai 4.66) in favour of the contractor evicted within a relationship of barter, with a solution that not generally seemed consistent with the decision taken elsewhere by the same jurist (Paul. D. 19.5.5.1) to allow a civil action for the hypothesis of non-execution. Many have therefore assumed that Paul was referring someone else's opinion (maybe by Salvio Giuliano) from him not shared, with a proposal though hardly sustainable. Part of the doctrine has so explained the different solution of D.19.4.1.1 with the hypothesis of a failure to improve the contractual situation due to the invalidi…
A CRF-Producing and -Secreting Tumor of the Lung
1986
Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) has recently been isolated from ovine hypothalamus, characterized chemically, and synthesized. Upton and Amatruda (1971) first suggested that CRF-like activity occurred in neoplastic tissues, and Hashimoto et al. (1980) subsequently detected CRF-like activity in an extract of an ACTHproducing nephroblastoma. Recently, Carey et al. (1984) and Asa et al. (1984) used immunocytochemical techniques to demonstrate CRF in postmortem tumor material obtained from patients with a carcinoma of the prostate and an intrasellar gangliocytoma.
Brevi considerazioni su Paul. 32 ad ed. D.19.4.1.4: tra tradizione testuale e proposte emendative
2012
This paper analyses a famous excerpt from the roman jurist Paulus on the barter (Paul. 32 ad ed. D.19.4.1.4). According to the scholars this passage lists (even if confusedly) the available procedural remedies against the defaulting party, given the institution of a valid contract: action in id quod interest, aimed at obtaining a specific performance, and the condictio quasi re non secuta, for the recovery of what has already been given. However, this reconstruction does not consider the connection (igitur) with the previous § 3, in which it is affirmed that barter is void when a party delivers a third party property. So the author suggests to abandon Mommsen’s reconstruction based on Bas.2…
Franczyzobiorca: między konsumentem a przedsiębiorcą. Mity o regulacji franczyzy
2022
