Structural overprint of a late Paleozoic accretionary system in north-central Chile (34°-35°S) during post-accretional deformation

2009

Challenges of a Post-Communist Presidency: Vaira Vike-Freiberga and the Leadership of Latvia

2017

In 1999, Vaira Vikṃe-Freiberga became the first woman president elected in Latvia, as well as the first female executive to assume that office in the post-communist Central and East European region. She was elected by the democratic unicameral legislature and completed two terms in office. President Vikṃe-Freiberga enjoyed record-high-approval ratings and achieved significant political successes, overseeing the accession of Latvia to the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. As president, Vikṃe-Freiberga did not embrace an explicitly feminist agenda: faced with economic challenges in a newly capitalist country, societal challenges in a country with ethnic tensions betwe…

Interaction of 68–kDa TAR RNA-binding protein and other cellular proteins with rpion protein-RNA stem-loop

1995

The RNA stem-loop structure of the trans-activating region TAR sequence of human immunodeficiency virus-1 mRNA is the binding site for a number of host cell proteins. A virtually identical set of proteins from HeLa nuclear extracts was found to bind to the predicted RNA hairpin element of prion protein (PrP) mRNA, as demonstrated in UV cross-linking/RNase protection and Northwestern assays. We show that the cellular TAR loop-binding protein, p68, is among those proteins which associate with PrP RNA. Competition experiments with various TAR RNA mutants revealed that binding of partially purified p68 to PrP RNA stem-loop occurs sequence-specifically. The 100-kDa 2-5A synthetase which is invol…

Effect of ultraviolet light, methyl methanesulfonate and ionizing radiation on the genotoxic response and apoptosis of mouse fibroblasts lacking c-Fo…

2001

c-Fos and p53 are DNA damage-inducible proteins that are involved in gene regulation, cell cycle checkpoint control and cell proliferation following exposure to genotoxic agents. To investigate comparatively the role of c-Fos and p53 in the maintenance of genomic stability and the induction of apoptosis, we generated mouse fibroblast cell lines from knockout mice deficient for either c-fos (fos -/-) or p53 (p53-/-) or for both gene products (fosp53-/-). The sensitivity of these established cell lines was compared with the corresponding wild-type cells as to the cytotoxic, clastogenic and apoptosis-inducing effects of ultraviolet (UV-C) light and methyl methanesulfonate (MMS). Additionally, …

According to the CPLL proteome sheriffs, not all aperitifs are created equal!

2014

Combinatorial peptide ligand libraries (CPLLs) have been adopted for investigating the proteome of a popular aperitif in Northern Italy, called "Amaro Branzi", stated to be an infusion of a secret herbal mixture, of which some ingredients are declared on the label, namely Angelica officinalis, Gentiana lutea and orange peel, sweetened by a final addition of honey. In order to assess the genuineness of this commercial liqueur, we have prepared extracts of the three vegetable ingredients, assessed their proteomes, and compared them to the one found in the aperitif. The amaro's proteome was identified via prior capture with CPLLs at two different pH values (2.2 and 4.8). Via mass spectrometry …

C7 is expressed on endothelial cells as a trap for the assembling terminal complement complex and may exert anti-inflammatory function.

2009

AbstractWe describe a novel localization of C7 as a membrane-bound molecule on endothelial cells (ECs). Data obtained by sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), Western blot analysis, Northern blot analysis, and mass spectrometry revealed that membrane-associated C7 (mC7) was indistinguishable from soluble C7 and was associated with vimentin on the cell surface. mC7 interacted with the other late complement components to form membrane-bound TCC (mTCC). Unlike the soluble SC5b-9, mTCC failed to stimulate ECs to express adhesion molecules, to secrete IL-8, and to induce albumin leakage through a monolayer of ECs, and more importantly protected ECs from the proinf…

Calcifying zooplankton standing stocks and in the North Pacific from the R/V Kilo Moana cruise KM1712

2022

This dataset compiles the standing stocks (ind/m³), the integrated standing stocks (ind/m²) and the integrated CaCO3 standing stocks (mg/m²) for three groups of zooplanktonic calcifying organisms: pteropods, heteropods and foraminifers. The organisms were collected by oblique towing (Ø 0.5 m, 90 μm mesh size, SeaGear mechanical flowmeter) in the North Pacific between Hawaii and the Gulf of Alaska during the R/V Kilo Moana cruise KM1712 in August 2017. The sampling strategy was designed to capture an integrated sample of all foraminifers, pteropods and heteropods from juveniles to adults living throughout the upper water column. Pteropods and heteropods were quantified and shell diameter mea…

Theophylline suppresses the release of tumour necrosis factor-alpha by blood monocytes and alveolar macrophages.

1994

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of theophylline on tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) release by human blood monocytes (BMo), and rat BMo and alveolar macrophages (AM). BMo and AM were incubated in the absence or presence of theophylline, and the cell-free supernatants were harvested and tested for TNF-alpha activity by bioassay. Theophylline dose-dependently reduced TNF-alpha release by human BMo: significant inhibition was observed at 100 microns (41 +/- 5.9% of controls) and at 50 microns (59 +/- 4.8% of controls), while the inhibitory activity of theophylline at 10 microns (71 +/- 8.9% of controls) was not statistically significant. This activity was maximal a…

DETECTION OF PLIO-QUATERNARY FAULTS IN MADONIE MOUNTAINS (SICILY) BY USING QUANTITATIVE GEOMORPHIC AND STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY ANALYSES

2011

The Northern Madonie Mountains (Northern-Central Sicily), sector of the Sicilian Maghrebian chain, consist of a tectonic thrust system developed through two subsequent main contractional events: 1) a shallow-seated compressional event developed during the Middle-Upper Miocene; 2) a deep-seated transpressional event occuring since the Late Miocene. Lower Pliocene (Trubi) to Quaternary clastic deposits unconformably lie on the tectonic units and are partially involved by deformation. In the selected area, syntectonic sedimentary basins characters are able to define the timing of deformation only until the Lower Pliocene; to resolve this gap of information application of quantitative geomorphi…

A model for rapid, active surveillance for medically-attended acute gastroenteritis within an integrated health care delivery system

2018

Background This study presents a novel methodology for estimating all-age, population-based incidence rates of norovirus and other pathogens that contribute to acute gastroenteritis in the United States using an integrated healthcare delivery system as a surveillance platform. Methods All cases of medically attended acute gastroenteritis within the delivery system were identified from April 1, 2014 through September 30, 2016. A sample of these eligible patients were selected to participate in two phone-based surveys and to self-collect a stool sample for laboratory testing. To ascertain household transmission patterns, information on household members with acute gastroenteritis was gathered…
