Acceleration of short and long DNA read mapping without loss of accuracy using suffix array
2014
HPG Aligner applies suffix arrays for DNA read mapping. This implementation produces a highly sensitive and extremely fast mapping of DNA reads that scales up almost linearly with read length. The approach presented here is faster (over 20 for long reads) and more sensitive (over 98% in a wide range of read lengths) than the current state-of-the-art mappers. HPG Aligner is not only an optimal alternative for current sequencers but also the only solution available to cope with longer reads and growing throughputs produced by forthcoming sequencing technologies.
Migration and students' performance: detecting geographical differences following a curves clustering approach
2020
Students’ migration mobility is the new form of migration: students migrate to improve their skills and become more valued for the job market. The data regard the migration of Italian Bachelors who enrolled at Master Degree level, moving typically from poor to rich areas. This paper investigates the migration and other possible determinants on the Master Degree students’ performance. The Clustering of Effects approach for Quantile Regression Coefficients Modelling has been used to cluster the effects of some variables on the students’ performance for three Italian macro-areas. Results show evidence of similarity between Southern and Centre students, with respect to the Northern ones.
IntelliPy: a GUI for analyzing IntelliCage data
2021
Abstract Summary The IntelliCage systems offer the possibility to conduct long-term behavioral experiments on mice in social groups without human intervention. Although this setup provides new findings, only about 150 studies with the IntelliCage system have been published in the last two decades, which is also caused by the challenging problems of processing and handling the large and heterogeneous amounts of captured data. This application note introduces the Python-GUI IntelliPy, especially designed for users not very experienced in using programming languages. IntelliPy allows users to quickly analyze the IntelliCage output in a user-friendly way, thus making the systems more accessible…
LipiDisease: associate lipids to diseases using literature mining
2021
Abstract Summary Lipids exhibit an essential role in cellular assembly and signaling. Dysregulation of these functions has been linked with many complications including obesity, diabetes, metabolic disorders, cancer and more. Investigating lipid profiles in such conditions can provide insights into cellular functions and possible interventions. Hence the field of lipidomics is expanding in recent years. Even though the role of individual lipids in diseases has been investigated, there is no resource to perform disease enrichment analysis considering the cumulative association of a lipid set. To address this, we have implemented the LipiDisease web server. The tool analyzes millions of recor…

Complex Detection in Protein-Protein Interaction Networks: A Compact Overview for Researchers and Practitioners
2012
The availability of large volumes of protein-protein interaction data has allowed the study of biological networks to unveil the complex structure and organization in the cell. It has been recognized by biologists that proteins interacting with each other often participate in the same biological processes, and that protein modules may be often associated with specific biological functions. Thus the detection of protein complexes is an important research problem in systems biology. In this review, recent graph-based approaches to clustering protein interaction networks are described and classified with respect to common peculiarities. The goal is that of providing a useful guide and referenc…
Dural splitting reconstruction in retethering after lipomeningocele repair: Technical note
2021
Background: Tethered spinal cord syndrome (TCS) can occur after the surgical repair of lipomeningoceles (LMCs). In these cases, the tethering results from postoperative adhesions between the spinal cord and the overlying repaired dura. A watertight dural closure using the residual dura and/or the surrounding tissues does not always provide enough space for the spinal cord and risks retethering. Here, we report a 16-year-old patient with secondary TCS following lipomeningocele repair who successfully underwent release of the tethered filum terminale utilizing a novel dural splitting reconstructive technique to attain a water-tight closure without the need for a duroplasty. Methods: A 16-yea…
Tehnoloģiju attīstības ietekme uz vadīšanas efektivitāti komercbankā.
2018
Darba ietvaros pētāmā problēma ir AS LPB Bank izmantotās lietvedības sistēmas ieviešanas procesa nepilnīga izpilde, kā arī tendence pārāk lēni ieviest jauno tehnoloģiju risinājumus AS LPB Bank ikdienas darbībā. Darba mērķis ir, pamatojoties uz AS LPB Bank darbības un ikdienas procesu analīzi, identificēt galvenās problēmas AS LPB Bank, kas radušās no ieviestās sistēmas un izstrādāt priekšlikumus šo problēmu atrisināšanai. Darbā iegūtie rezultāti ir konkrētu priekšlikumu izstrāde, lai novērstu kā esošās, tā potenciālās problēmas ar ieviesto sistēmu nākotnē, kā arī veicinātu vispārēju AS LPB Bank attīstību IT virzienā. Darbs sastāv no ievada, 4 nodaļām, secinājumiem, priekšlikumiem un izmanto…
Exploring the odorant and molecular characteristics of molecules sharing the odour notes of an aroma blending mixture
2021
Online event (Live and on-demand); International audience; To perceive a huge number of odors from few hundreds ORs, the human olfactory system encodes odor identities by an olfactory scheme whereby one olfactory receptor (OR) recognizes multiple odorants while one odorant activates different combinations of ORs [1, 2]. Odors perceived in our environment are mainly the result of mixtures of odorants, but the specific mechanisms involved in their processing remain poorly understood [3]. In previous studies performed at INRAE-CSGA [4], the perception of a mixture of ethyl isobutyrate (Et iB, strawberry-like odor, STR) and ethyl maltol (Et-M, caramel-like odor, CAR) was investigated in compari…
