“Though I was alone with the unseen, I comprehended it not”: The Relationship Between the Dead and the Living in Margaret Oliphant’s „A Beleaguered C…
2017
Margaret Oliphant 1828–1897 is best remembered today as one of the important practitioners the domestic fiction, with her “Chronicles of Carlingford” series considered to be her most enduring achievement. Oliphant’s other interesting group of works are ghost stories and other spiritual tales known as the “Stories of the Seen and Unseen”. A Beleaguered City, a novella first published in 1879, is generally considered to be Oliphant’s most successful supernatural tale. Set in Semur, France, and told by five different narrators, the story focuses on the inhabitants of Semur, who are evicted from their town by the spirits of the dead. This paper aims to demonstrate that Oliphant uses the supern…
The Blaumanis Moment: National Literature Enters the Stage of Art
2012
My aim in this article is to discuss the literary field in Latvia slightly before 1900. More specifically, I want to focus on the particular situation when literature written in the Latvian language ceases to be a product of didactic intention and moralizing value, and makes the crucial step in recognizing its rights to submerge into primarily aesthetic issues. It is also the moment when the personality of the author cuts through the still mostly realistic surface of literary works, making him (or her) be perceived as unmistakably present, even if this move often remains unnoticed by most contemporary and even later observers.1 The author who in my article represents this departure, which u…

Perception and the ‘I’ in Samuel Beckett’s Company and Francis Bacon’s Paintings
2016
This art…
"There Is No Book, No Matter How Bad It Is, That Does Not Have Something Good in It": The Circulation of the Novels by Sebastiano Erizzo and Niccolò …
2019
This paper provides a first consideration of the dissemination and impact of the novels by Sebastiano Erizzo and Niccolò Granucci in the Spanish Golden Age, focusing on two of their main works, Le sei giornate (1567) and La piacevol notte et lieto giorno (1574), respectively. The characteristics of the identified copies, some coincidences with texts by Lope and Cervantes, and the information collected on the circulation of these two works, whose focus on morality may have favoured their dissemination, lead to the suggestion that their novels had a certain influence on Spanish literature. These circumstances should encourage Hispanists to turn their eyes towards the novels of Niccolò Granucc…

"Le Appassionate" in camera oscura
2015
