Bidirectional laser cavity solitons

2007

Cavity solitons in optical systems have been studied for two decades in a large variety of optical systems. In principle, bidirectional lasers can emit only unidirectionally in steady state, as the two-mode solution (non null steady state in the two possible emission directions) is an unstable solution (winner-takes-all competition prevents the bidirectional cw emission). But for a wide aperture cavity this is not necessarily true as, in different regions of the transverse (with respect to the propagation axis) direction, emission in different propagation directions could occur if the fronts separating these domains are stable. In fact this is exactly what happens when the cavity losses for…

Quantifying Preferential Trading in the e-MID Interbank Market

2013

Interbank markets allow credit institutions to exchange capital for purposes of liquidity management. These markets are among the most liquid markets in the financial system. However, liquidity of interbank markets dropped during the 2007-2008 financial crisis, and such a lack of liquidity influenced the entire economic system. In this paper, we analyze transaction data from the e-MID market which is the only electronic interbank market in the Euro Area and US, over a period of eleven years (1999-2009). We adapt a method developed to detect statistically validated links in a network, in order to reveal preferential trading in a directed network. Preferential trading between banks is detecte…

Manipulating the alpha level cannot cure significance testing

2018

We argue that making accept/reject decisions on scientific hypotheses, including a recent call for changing the canonical alpha level from p = 0.05 to p = 0.005, is deleterious for the finding of new discoveries and the progress of science. Given that blanket and variable alpha levels both are problematic, it is sensible to dispense with significance testing altogether. There are alternatives that address study design and sample size much more directly than significance testing does; but none of the statistical tools should be taken as the new magic method giving clear-cut mechanical answers. Inference should not be based on single studies at all, but on cumulative evidence from multiple in…

Theoretical morphology of tetrapod skull networks

2014

Abstract Network models of the tetrapod skull in which nodes represent bones and links represent sutures have recently offered new insights into the structural constraints underlying the evolutionary reduction of bone number in the tetrapod skull, known as Williston's Law. Here, we have built null network model-derived generative morphospaces of the tetrapod skull using random, preferential attachment, and geometric proximity growth rules. Our results indicate that geometric proximity is the best null model to explain the disparity of skull structures under two structural constraints: bilateral symmetry and presence of unpaired bones. The analysis of the temporal occupation of this morphosp…

Test of Lorentz and CPT violation with short baseline neutrino oscillation excesses

2011

The sidereal time dependence of MiniBooNE ν[subscript e] and ν[over-bar][subscript e] appearance data is analyzed to search for evidence of Lorentz and CPT violation. An unbinned Kolmogorov–Smirnov (K–S) test shows both the ν[subscript e] and ν[over-bar][subscript e] appearance data are compatible with the null sidereal variation hypothesis to more than 5%. Using an unbinned likelihood fit with a Lorentz-violating oscillation model derived from the Standard Model Extension (SME) to describe any excess events over background, we find that the ν[subscript e] appearance data prefer a sidereal time-independent solution, and the ν[over-bar][subscript e] appearance data slightly prefer a sidereal…

Backbone of credit relationships in the Japanese credit market

2016

We detect the backbone of the weighted bipartite network of the Japanese credit market relationships. The backbone is detected by adapting a general method used in the investigation of weighted networks. With this approach we detect a backbone that is statistically validated against a null hypothesis of uniform diversification of loans for banks and firms. Our investigation is done year by year and it covers more than thirty years during the period from 1980 to 2011. We relate some of our findings with economic events that have characterized the Japanese credit market during the last years. The study of the time evolution of the backbone allows us to detect changes occurred in network size,…

Aligned Electric and Magnetic Weyl Fields

2003

We analyze the spacetimes admitting a direction for which the relative electric and magnetic Weyl fields are aligned. We give an invariant characterization of these metrics and study the properties of its Debever null vectors. The directions 'observing' aligned electric and magnetic Weyl fields are obtained for every Petrov type. The results on the no existence of purely magnetic solutions are extended to the wider class having homothetic electric and magnetic Weyl fields.

A covariant determination of the Weyl canonical frames in Petrov type I spacetimes

1997

A covariant algorithm is given to obtain principal 2-forms, Debever null directions and canonical frames associated with Petrov type I Weyl tensors. The relationship between these Weyl elements is explained, and their explicit expressions depending on Weyl invariants are obtained. These results are used to determine a cosmological observer in type I universes, and their usefulness in spacetime intrinsic characterization is shown.

Cosmic censorship conjecture in some matching spherical collapsing metrics

2017

A physically plausible Lema{\^{\i}}tre-Tolman-Bondi collapse in the marginally bound case is considered. By "physically plausible" we mean that the corresponding metric is ${\cal C}^1$ matched at the collapsing star surface and further that its {\em intrinsic} energy is, as due, stationary and finite. It is proved for this Lema{\^{\i}}tre-Tolman-Bondi collapse, for some parameter values, that its intrinsic central singularity is globally naked, thus violating the cosmic censorship conjecture with, for each direction, one photon, or perhaps a pencil of photons, leaving the singularity and reaching the null infinity. Our result is discussed in relation to some other cases in the current liter…
