Modelling the optical properties of fresh biomass burning aerosol produced in a smoke chamber: results from the EFEU campaign

2007

A better characterisation of the optical properties of biomass burning aerosol as a function of the burning conditions is required in order to quantify their effects on climate and atmospheric chemistry. Controlled laboratory combustion experiments with different fuel types were carried out at the combustion facility of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (Mainz, Germany) as part of the "Impact of Vegetation Fires on the Composition and Circulation of the Atmosphere" (EFEU) project. The combustion conditions were monitored with concomitant CO2 and CO measurements. The mass scattering efficiencies of 8.9±0.2 m2 g<sup&gt…

What are the biological determinants of regeneration of perennial weeds? Effect of fragment weight and bud number on the regrowth of five perennial w…

2022

Perennial weeds have become an increasing problem with the reduction of herbicide use andtillage. Because of their capacity to regenerate from vegetative organs, such as roots andrhizomes, they must be controlled with different management techniques than annuals. Todate, few studies exist on this topic and farmers often lack solutions to control perennials intheir cropping systems. Management strategies must focus on the depletion of theregenerative organ reserves to hamper the production of new shoots. However, there is aneed for a better understanding of below-ground organs physiology and the determiningfactors of their regrowth capacities. Our aim was to assess the number of shoots and th…

The magnetosphere of the close accreting PMS binary V4046 Sgr

2013

V4046 Sagittarii AB is a close short-period classical T Tauri binary. It is a circularised and synchronised system accreting from a circumbinary disk. In 2009 it was observed as part of a coordinated program involving near-simultaneous spectropolarimetric observations with ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawai'i Telescope and high-resolution X-ray observations with XMM-Newton. Magnetic maps of each star were derived from Zeeman-Doppler imaging. After briefly highlighting the most significant observational findings, we present a preliminary 3D model of the binary magnetosphere constructed from the magnetic maps using a newly developed binary magnetic field extrapolation code. The large-scale f…

Development of Removable Visual Impact Indicator or Polymer Composite Materials

2021

The prototype of removable visual impact indicator for thermoset polymer composite materials is developed, and its characteristics are experimentally determined. The indicator is a fabric tape glued by epoxy to the surface of the polymer composite. The tape is impregnated with a composition that provides a visual response at the place of an impact on the composite surface. Ball-drop tests demonstrated the increase of the magnitude of the visual response with the impact energy at different substrate hardnesses. The shelf-life and mode of the tape storage until commissioning are determined. Peel tests showed the ability to remove a used indicator without damaging the surface of the composite.

Non-commutative Ring Learning with Errors from Cyclic Algebras

2022

AbstractThe Learning with Errors (LWE) problem is the fundamental backbone of modern lattice-based cryptography, allowing one to establish cryptography on the hardness of well-studied computational problems. However, schemes based on LWE are often impractical, so Ring LWE was introduced as a form of ‘structured’ LWE, trading off a hard to quantify loss of security for an increase in efficiency by working over a well-chosen ring. Another popular variant, Module LWE, generalizes this exchange by implementing a module structure over a ring. In this work, we introduce a novel variant of LWE over cyclic algebras (CLWE) to replicate the addition of the ring structure taking LWE to Ring LWE by add…

Individuality in the Early Number Skill Components Underlying Basic Arithmetic Skills

2018

Early number skills underlie success in basic arithmetic. However, very little is known about the skill profiles among children in preprimary education and how the potential profiles are related to arithmetic development. This longitudinal study of 440 Finnish children in preprimary education (mean age: 75 months) modeled latent performancelevel profile groups for the early number skill components that are proposed to be key predictors of arithmetic (symbolic number comparison, mapping, and verbal counting skills). Based on three assessment time points (September, January, and May), four profile groups were found: the poorest-performing (6%), low-performing (16%), nearaverage-performing (33…

Mutual inductance for an explicitly finite number of turns

2011

Published version of an article published in Progress In Electromagnetics Research B, 28, 273-287. Also available from the publisher at http://www.jpier.org/pierb/pier.php?paper=10110103 Non coaxial mutual inductance calculations, based on a Bessel function formulation, are presented for coils modelled by an explicitly finite number of circular turns. The mutual inductance of two such turns can be expressed as an integral of a product of three Bessel functions and an exponential factor, and it is shown that the exponential factors can be analytically summed as a simple geometric progression, or other related sums. This allows the mutual inductance of two thin solenoids to be expressed as an…

Expansion of rDNA and pericentromere satellite repeats in the genomes of bank voles Myodes glareolus exposed to environmental radionuclides

2021

Abstract Altered copy number of certain highly repetitive regions of the genome, such as satellite DNA within heterochromatin and ribosomal RNA loci (rDNA), is hypothesized to help safeguard the genome against damage derived from external stressors. We quantified copy number of the 18S rDNA and a pericentromeric satellite DNA (Msat‐160) in bank voles (Myodes glareolus) inhabiting the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ), an area that is contaminated by radionuclides and where organisms are exposed to elevated levels of ionizing radiation. We found a significant increase in 18S rDNA and Msat‐160 content in the genomes of bank voles from contaminated locations within the CEZ compared with animals f…
