Modified morphological correlation based on bit-map representations.
1999
Pattern recognition with high discrimination can be achieved with a morphological correlator. A modification of this correlator is carried out by use of a binary slicing process instead of linear thresholding. Although the obtained correlation result is not identical to the conventional morphological correlation, it requires fewer calculations and provides even higher discrimination. Two optical experimental implementations of this modified morphological correlator as well as some experimental results are shown.
An unsupervised region growing method for 3D image segmentation
1995
The paper deals with 3D shape decomposition problem, objects are modelled as finite unions of almost-convex primitives. A new region growing method is proposed to extract meaningful objects parts. Parts are individuated by performing a set-partitioning of surface dominating points. The partition step returns labelled seeds from which to start a region growing procedure that propagate labels onto object surface patches. A fuzzy concept of λ-convexity is introduced to test noised real images. Experimental results are given.
Large-eddy simulations of turbulent flow with heat transfer in simple and complex geometries using Harwell-FLOW3D
1996
Abstract Large-eddy simulation (LES) results are presented and discussed for the turbulent flow with heat transfer in different geometrical configurations, including a plane channel, a channel bearing transverse square ribs on one of the walls, and a crossed-corrugated air heater. They were obtained using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code Harwell-FLOW3D (Release 2), finite-volume grids having up to 423 nodes, and the Smagorinsky subgrid model with several variants regarding near-wall damping and wall boundary conditions. The first problem (plane turbulent Poiseuille flow with heat transfer) was mainly used as a benchmark to investigate the influence of numerical methods (pressure-…
Spectrum of novel mutations found in Waardenburg syndrome types 1 and 2: implications for molecular genetic diagnostics
2013
Objectives Till date, mutations in the genes PAX3 and MITF have been described in Waardenburg syndrome (WS), which is clinically characterised by congenital hearing loss and pigmentation anomalies. Our study intended to determine the frequency of mutations and deletions in these genes, to assess the clinical phenotype in detail and to identify rational priorities for molecular genetic diagnostics procedures. Design Prospective analysis. Patients 19 Caucasian patients with typical features of WS underwent stepwise investigation of PAX3 and MITF . When point mutations and small insertions/deletions were excluded by direct sequencing, copy number analysis by multiplex ligation-dependent probe …
Genetic and Molecular Characterization of The Human Osteosarcoma 3AB-OS Cancer Stem Cell Line: A Possible Model For Studying Osteosarcoma Origin and …
2013
Finding new treatments targeting cancer stem cells (CSCs) within a tumor seems to be critical to halt cancer and improve patient survival. Osteosarcoma is an aggressive tumor affecting adolescents, for which there is no second-line chemotherapy. Uncovering new molecular mechanisms underlying the development of osteosarcoma and origin of CSCs is crucial to identify new possible therapeutic strategies. Here, we aimed to characterize genetically and molecularly the human osteosarcoma 3AB-OS CSC line, previously selected from MG63 cells and which proved to have both in vitro and in vivo features of CSCs. Classic cytogenetic studies demonstrated that 3AB-OS cells have hypertriploid karyotype wit…

Acid—base properties of azo dyes in the presence of surfactants
1991
Abstract The changes in the acid—base properties of an azo dye produced by the presence of surfactants, at surfactant concentrations below and above the CMC, are quantitatively described using a simple model and spectrophotometric and potentiometric measurements. The azo dye formed by aniline and N -(1-naphthyl)-ethylenediamine, and the surfactants sodium dodecyl sulphate, Triton X-100 and N -cetylpyridinium chloride (NCPC) are used. The protonation constants of the free and surfactant-bound dye species, the binding constant of the protonated and unprotonated forms of the dye, and the average aggregation number of the dye—NCPC aggregates are evaluated.
Gas phase charged aggregates of bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) and divalent metal ions: first evidence of AOT solvated aggregates
2011
Assembling and chelating properties of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOTNa) towards divalent metal ions have been investigated in the gas phase by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. A variety of positively charged monometallated and mixed metal aggregates are formed. Interestingly, several ions contain solvent (MeOH, H2O) molecules and constitute the most abundant AOT cationic aggregates not containing sodium. These species are the first example of solvated AOT-metal ion aggregates in the gas phase. By increasing the surfactant aggregation number, the abundance of solvated species becomes lower than that of unsolvated ones. Decompositions of ionic species have been studied…
Self-assembly and intra-cluster reactions of erbium and ytterbium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinates in the gas phase
2014
RATIONALE The study of surfactant organization in vacuum allows surfactant–surfactant interaction to be unveiled in the absence of surrounding solvent molecules. Knowledge on their chemical-physical properties may also lead to the definition of more efficient gas-phase carriers, air-cleaning agents and nanoreactors. In addition, the presence of lanthanide-group ions adds unique photochemical properties to surfactants. METHODS The structural features, stability and fragmentation patterns of charged aggregates formed by lanthanide-functionalized surfactants, ytterbium and erbium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate ((AOT)3Yb and (AOT)3Er), have been investigated by electrospray ionization mass spe…
