Calculation of phase diagrams not requiring the derivatives of the Gibbs energy for multinary mixtures

A method for the calculation of phase diagrams (tie lines and binodal, spinodal, critical points and their stability) based exclusively on the Gibbs energy of mixing with no need of its derivatives with respect to the composition variables is extended to multinary mixtures for any number of components. The mathematical description of the (K-1)-dimensional phase diagram of a K-component mixture is presented. The method is demonstrated for a quinternary blend of five polymers exhibiting a closed miscibility gap; all binary, ternary and quaternary subsystems are completely miscible. Measurments of collisional line widths in the stimulated Raman Q-branch of the ν1 band of silane

Self-broadened widths of 28SiH4 in the ν1Q-branch have been measured at room temperature (295 K) using high-resolution stimulated Raman Spectroscopy. These collisional widths have been obtained by fitting a super-position of Voigt profiles to the experimental spectra in the pressure range 28–154 Torr. No evidence for line mixing within the tetrahedral components of a Q(J) line has been found. The line broadening coefficients for J up to 13 depend weakly on the rotational quantum number. The mean value is 103.7 × 10−3 cm−1 atm−1.

Enhancement of sensitivity in high-resolution stimulated Raman spectroscopy of gases: Applicaion to the 2ν2 (1285 cm−1) band of CO2

The application of a multiple-pass gas cell to quasi-cw stimulated Raman scattering is demonstrated to be a powerful method for significantly increasing the sensitivity. As a consequence, such a device offers the possibility of working in the 0.1–1 Torr pressure range for weak bands. As a striking example, experimental results are given for the 2ν2 band of CO2 at 1285 cm−1. The band is almost completely resolved with a very good signal-to-noise ratio. Effective conductivity in association with model structure and spatial inhomogeneity of polymer/carbon black composites

The relationship between effective conductivity and cell structure of polyethylene/carbon composites as well as between effective conductivity and spatial distribution of carbon black are discussed. Following Yoshida's model both structures can, in a way, be said to be intermediate between the well known Maxwell-Garnett (MG) and Bruggeman (BR) limiting structures. Using TEM photographs on composites with various carbon blacks we have observed that the larger is Garncarek's inhomogeneity measure H of two-dimensional (2D) representative distribution of the carbon black, the smaller is the effective conductivity of the composite.

Synthesis, Structures and DFT Calculations on Alkaline-Earth Metal Azide-Crown Ether Complexes

The first examples of azide complexes of calcium, strontium or barium with crown ethers have been prepared and fully characterised, notably [Ba([18]crown-6)(N3)2(MeOH)], [Sr([15]crown-5)(N3)2(H2O)], [Ca([15]crown-5)(N3)2(H2O)] and [Sr([15]crown-5)(N3(NO3)]. Crystal structures reveal the presence of a variety of coordination modes for the azide groups including kappa 1-, mu-1,3- and linkages via H-bonded water molecules, in addition to azide ions. The [Ba([18]crown-6)(N3)2(MeOH)].1/3 MeOH contains dinuclear cations with three mu-1,3-NNN bridges, the first example of this type in main group chemistry. Salt concentration and particle density dependence of electrophoretic mobilities of spherical colloids in aqueous suspension.

Using laser Doppler velocimetry in the superheterodyne mode, we conducted a systematic study of the electrophoretic mobility of dispersions of small silica spheres (a=18 nm) suspended in water at different salinities and particle concentrations. The concentration of NaCl was varied from 40 microM up to 16 mM, while the particle concentrations were varied between 4.2x10(18) and 2.1x10(20) m-3. We find a decrease of mobility with increasing salt concentrations and an increase with increased particle number densities. The effect of partial exfoliation of multilayer silicate filler particles on the elastic properties of a polymer composite

Abstract A method for stepwise calculation the elastic constants of a three-phase composite, including the polymer matrix, the fully exfoliated silicate nanolayers and the platelike silicate particles in the form of multilayer intercalated stacks is considered. A theoretical analysis is carried out by using the Mori–Tanaka theory of an equivalent medium. The influence of degree of exfoliation (the ratio of exfoliated filler content to the total filler content) on the reinforcing efficiency is studied and discussed.
