Predicting stiffness and strength of birch pulp:Polylactic acid composites

This paper studies failure of birch pulp–polylactic acid composites. Stiffness and strength are calculated using the theory of short fibre composites and the results are compared to experimental data. The results differed from the experimental values by 0–6%. With less aligned fibres the short fibre theory is not feasible. The performance of the 40 wt% birch pulp – polylactic acid composite is predicted with X-ray microtomography based finite element modelling, and the results are compared with experiments. Modified most-probable-number technique for the specific determination of Escherichia coli from environmental samples using a fluorogenic method

A specific and senstive modification of the most-probable-number (MPN) technique by addition of 4-methylumbelliferyl-β-D-glucuronide (MUG) to both presumptive and confirmatory media was performed. The use of this modification allows the precise determination of Escherichia coli from marine samples (seawater, sediment and shellfish) within 7 days compared to 10–12 days required by using of the standard methodology. No false-positive isolates for fluorescence reaction have been observed, although one E. coli strain fluorescent-positive on agar was isolated from nonfluorescent tubes. Abstract In the present study rheological, static and impact tests are carried out on two adhesive resins usually employed in marine applications; then single lap joint tests are conducted on composites joints evidencing the effect of the curing time of both resins on the mechanical properties of the joint. The applicability and workability conditions of the adhesive resins are determined evaluating the curing evolution by a preliminary rheological analysis; then the relation of curing properties with the mechanical performances of the resins themselves and with ones of the composite joints is estimated. The dynamic response of thin-walled structures is driven by mass and stiffness distribution. As such, variable-stiffness (VS) composites offer opportunities to tune structural dynamic responses. To this extent, efficient analysis tools become increasingly important for structural analysis and design purposes. In this work, an efficient and versatile Ritz method for free vibrations and linear transient analysis of VS doubly curved shell structures is presented. VS shell structures are modeled as an assembly of shell-like domains. Pb-PbOHCl Composite Nanowires Synthesized by Galvanic Deposition in Template

In this paper, we report a detailed study on the synthesis of composite nanowires of Pb-PbOHCl via galvanic deposition into the pores of a membrane acting as a template. PbOHCl deposition quantitatively occurs as the solution pH exceeds the value of about 4.12. Simultaneously, owing to the galvanic coupling, electro-deposition of lead occurs, so composite nanowires were formed. The role of different parameters controlling the kinetic evolution of the process, such as oxygen bubbling, solution pH, surface area and type of sacrificial anode were investigated one at a time.
