2013
Sedation in neurocritical patients remains a challenge as there is no drug that meets all the requirements. Since the appearance of the AnaConDa® device, and according to the latest recommendations, sevoflurane has become an alternative for patients with brain injury. The use of AnaConDa® produces an increase in the anatomical dead space that leads to a decrease in alveolar ventilation. If the decrease in the alveolar ventilation is not offset by an increase in minute volume, there will be an increase in PaCO2. We report the case of a patient with severe traumatic brain injury who suffered an increase in intracranial pressure as a result of increased PaCO2 after starting sedation with the A…
2021
Unfinished constructions represent a contemporary unresolved problem, especially in the Italian scenario. Despite the different type, original intended use and location, the reinforced concrete used as structural material denotes a common distinctive feature of these constructions. In recent decades, this phenomenon has been the object of scandal campaigns, mostly referred to public Administrations. By contrast, various publications and exhibitions have extensively investigated the potentials of unfinished constructions, arousing the interest of academics and designers. Nevertheless, on an operational level the issue still appears unsolved. Indeed, the incomplete constructions bring up tech…
Distributed optimal power flow for islanded microgrids: An application to the Smart Polygeneration Microgrid of the Genoa University
2016
In this work, the application of an original distributed optimal power flow method to test a microgrid in the Savona area, Italy is proposed. The microgrid shows different types of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and is connected to the main grid through a fixed power bus. Due to the high computational speed, the applied distributed Optimal Power Flow can be performed almost in real time, i.e. every 5 minutes or less. The operating solution found for generators, simply using local information, corresponds to a suboptimal condition with reduced losses, bus voltages and line currents within constrained intervals. The distributed optimization algorithm is iterative, but also fast. It is ba…
Respiratory Parameters after Systemic Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone Administration
1991
Neuroanatomical studies on the distribution of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and its receptors (7) as well as physiological data suggest a regulatory function of endogenous CRH in hypothalamic and extrahypothalamic brain areas [1, 4]. Endogenous CRH acts within the endocrine hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis and affects cardiovascular regulation and respiration through extrahypothalamic pathways. CRH also stimulates gluconeogenesis and release of plasma-catecholamines. Our experiments in humans also demonstrate an influence on respiration and on heart rate activity after systemic application of CRH. Respiratory parameters and heart rate were analyzed during steady-state conditions …
Space of seclusion and life: the monastery of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria in Palermo between conservation, use, maintenance and enhancement
2022
The complex of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria in Palermo has been inhabited for more than 700 years, first as a Dominican …
Associations between muscle strength, spirometric pulmonary function and mobility in healthy older adults
2014
Background: Pathological obstruction in lungs leads to severe decreases in muscle strength and mobility in patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interdependency between muscle strength, spirometric pulmonary functions and mobility outcomes in healthy older men and women, where skeletal muscle and pulmonary function decline without interference of overt disease. Methods: 135 69 to 81‐yr‐old participants were recruited into the cross‐sectional study, which was performed as a part of European study MyoAge. Full, partial and no mediation models were constructed to assess the interdependency between muscle strength (handgr…
