Living on the Edge: Settlement Patterns by the Symbiotic Barnacle Xenobalanus globicipitis on Small Cetaceans
2015
The highly specialized coronulid barnacle Xenobalanus globicipitis attaches exclusively on cetaceans worldwide, but little is known about the factors that drive the microhabitat patterns on its hosts. We investigate this issue based on data on occurrence, abundance, distribution, orientation, and size of X. globicipitis collected from 242 striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) that were stranded along the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Barnacles exclusively infested the fins, particularly along the trailing edge. Occurrence, abundance, and density of X. globicipitis were significantly higher, and barnacles were significantly larger, on the caudal fin than on the flippers and dorsal fin. Ba…
Structure and composition of flavoured model cheeses impact on sodium and aroma release
2010
Présentation d'un diaporama ; https://colloque4.inra.fr/biopolymeres2010; Health authorities have called for a reduction of salt quantity in various foodstuffs. Cheese is one of the most targeted products because of its high sodium content. In order to understand how to reduce salt in cheeses without modifying salty perception, the interactions between cheese structure and in-mouth sodium release have to be studied. In this way, model cheeses have been selected due to their great variability of formulation. The current study was conducted to determine how the release of sodium ions and aroma compounds could be modified by structure and composition of model cheeses (lipid/protein ratio, sodi…
serrano gene and NaCl perception
2010
Gustatory information is considered to be important for animals to control behavior when they seek for food or partners. 60 members of gustatory receptor (Gr) genes have been identified in Drosophila.. However little is now about mechanisms of taste perception and transduction in response to stimuli. In order to identify new genes involved in gustation, we performed a genetic screen using Gal4-UAS system based on expression of the reporter gene in chemosensory organs and gustatory defects in larvae and adults. We identified the serrano (sano) gene, which encodes a 778 aa protein with a leucine zipper domain, a putative transmembrane domain, and putative bipartite nuclear localization signal…
Selective CO 2 Sorption Using Compartmentalized Coordination Polymers with Discrete Voids**
2021
Carbon capture and storage with porous materials is one of the most promising technologies to minimize CO2 release into the atmosphere. Here, we report a family of compartmentalized coordination polymers (CCPs) capable of capturing gas molecules in a selective manner based on two novel tetrazole-based ligands. Crystal structures have been modelled theoretically under the Density Functional Theory (DFT) revealing the presence of discrete voids of 380 A3 . Single gas adsorption isotherms of N2 , CH4 and CO2 have been measured, obtaining a loading capacity of 0.6, 1.7 and 2.2 molecules/void at 10 bar and at 298 K for the best performing material. Moreover, they present excellent selectivity an…

In earl…
Occurrence of whale barnacles in Nerja Cave (Málaga, southern Spain): Indirect evidence of whale consumption by humans in the Upper Magdalenian
2014
A total of 167 plates of two whale barnacle species (Tubicinella major Lamarck, 1802 and Cetopirus complanatus Morch, 1853) have been found in the Upper Magdalenian layers of Nerja Cave, Mina Chamber (Maro, Malaga, southern Spain). This is the first occurrence of these species in a prehistoric site. Both species are specific to the southern right whale Eubalena australis, today endemic in the Southern Hemisphere. Because of Antarctic sea-ice expansion during the Last Glacial Period, these whales could have migrated to the Northern Hemisphere, and reached southern Spain. Whale barnacles indicate that maritime-oriented forager human groups found stranded whales on the coast and, because of th…
Emergence of the epibiotic barnacle Xenobalanus globicipitis in Guiana dolphins after a morbillivirus outbreak in Sepetiba Bay, Brazil
2021
Abstract We report on the emergence of the epibiotic barnacle Xenobalanus globicipitis in Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) from Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in September 2018, six months after a lethal morbillivirus epidemic. Small boat surveys were conducted at the entrance and in the interior of the bay from January 2018 to February 2021. Dolphins were photo-identified and classified according to overall spatial use of the Bay. We examined the potential influence of the period and habitat on the prevalence of X. globicipitis. The overall prevalence of the barnacle was 38.7% in 214 dolphins. X. globicipitis was not observed in 99 individually identified dolphins from January t…

Optimizing the use of linaclotide in patients with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome : an expert consensus report
2017
INTRODUCTION: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder characterized by chronic or recurrent abdominal pain in association with defecation or a change in bowel habits. A predominant disorder of bowel habits, IBS is classified into three main subtypes: constipation-predominant IBS (IBS-C), diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D) and IBS alternating between constipation and diarrhea (IBS-M). Linaclotide is a first-in-class, oral, once-daily guanylate cyclase-C receptor agonist (GC-CA) that is licensed for the symptomatic treatment of moderate-to-severe IBS-C in adults. This review aims to facilitate and optimize clinical practices, establishing common guidelines to monitor patie…
