Pages to house staff after hours, especially overnight, lead to interrupted sleep and fatigue the next day. Although some pages are urgent, others may not need an immediate response. In this study we aimed to identify unwarranted pages and to establish ways to reduce them.Over 2 months, all pages to the Department of Pediatric Urology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, during call hours were documented, including the assessment of the responding physicians of their medical necessity. The outer membrane protein (OMP) OprD is the major channel through which carbapenems permeate the outer membrane of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In this study, we analyzed the OMP profiles of several P. aeruginosa clinical isolates showing diminished susceptibility to imipenem while remaining susceptible to meropenem. All these isolates lacked OprD or showed a reduced expression of this porin. Susceptibility to meropenem was thus independent of the level of OprD expression, indicating that the antimicrobial could be taken up via an alternative route. 1. Inhalation of vanadium compounds, particularly vanadate, is a cause of occupational bronchial asthma. We have now studied the action of vanadate on human isolated bronchus. Vanadate (0.1 microM-3 mM) produced concentration-dependent, well-sustained contraction. We report an experimental and theoretical lattice-dynamics study of yttrium orthovanadate $({\text{YVO}}_{4})$ up to 33 GPa together with a theoretical study of its structural stability under pressure. Raman-active modes of the zircon phase are observed up to 7.5 GPa, where the onset of an irreversible zircon-to-scheelite phase transition is detected, and Raman-active modes in the scheelite structure are observed up to 20 GPa, where a reversible second-order phase transition occurs. A collection of 76 plant-pathogenic and 41 saprophytic Fusarium oxysporum strains was screened for sensitivity to 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (2,4-DAPG), a broad-spectrum antibiotic produced by multiple strains of antagonistic Pseudomonas fluorescens. Approximately 17% of the F. oxysporum strains were relatively tolerant to high 2,4-DAPG concentrations. Tolerance to 2,4-DAPG did not correlate with the geographic origin of the strains, formae speciales, intergenic spacer (IGS) group, or fusaric acid production levels.
