Chemical initiation for butyl and lauryl acrylate monolithic columns for CEC.

2009

Butyl acrylate (BA)- and lauryl acrylate (LA)-based monolithic stationary phases for CEC were synthesized, using a redox system as initiator of polymerization. BA monoliths were initiated with ammonium peroxodisulfate, whereas LA columns were obtained with lauroyl peroxide as initiator. In both cases, TEMED was used to activate the process. The influence of porogenic solvent composition on both morphological and electrochromatographic properties of the resulting monoliths was investigated. Excellent efficiencies (minimum plate heights of 4.2-6.3 microm for BA columns and 2.6-5.3 microm for LA stationary phases, for a PAHs mixture) were achieved. The capability of separation of both types of…

2007

Emergence of ovulatory cycles with aging in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) alters the trajectory of cardiovascular and metabolic risk fa…

2013

Abstract STUDY QUESTION: What alters cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors with aging in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Lipid parameters, mainly low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, increase with aging, but not in women who attain ovulatory cycles. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Cardiovascular and metabolic parameters tend to increase with aging, but this has not been shown in a prospective longitudinal study in women with PCOS. Correlates of these changes have not been identified. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective cohort of 118 hyperandrogenic women with PCOS who were followed from the age of 20-25 years at 5 year intervals for 20 years. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SE…

Hormone therapy is associated with better body composition and adipokine/glucose profiles

2012

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of preventing the metabolic health consequences of postmenopausal hypogonadism with the use of long-term hormone therapy (HT). Methods: We used a monozygotic co-twin control design including 10 twin pairs (aged 56-62 y) discordant for HT (duration of HT, 2-10 y). In addition, 14 premenopausal women (aged 29-35 y) who did not use HT were studied to evaluate the differences in metabolic health between the premenopausal and postmenopausal states. Body composition was determined, and waist-to-hip ratio was used as an estimate for fat distribution. Serum sex steroids, sex hormone-binding globulin, and serum lipid and glucose profil…

Cross-Country Measurement Invariance and Effects of Sociodemographic Factors on Body Weight and Shape Concern-Related Constructs in Eight Countries.

2020

The aim of this study was to examine the cross-country invariance of five well-established measures of body weight and shape concern-related attitudes and behaviors (i.e., drive for leanness, drive for muscularity, strategies to increase muscle, strategies to lose weight, and weight and shape concerns). A secondary objective was to examine the effects of several sociodemographic factors (age, BMI, socioeconomic status, and gender) on item and latent factor scores of these constructs. A total of 6272 emerging adults (4218 women; Mage = 21.46, SD = 3.11) from Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Italy, Japan, Spain, and the U.S. completed a self-report online survey as part of a larger study. The endocrine pattern of late onset adrenal hyperplasia (21-hydroxylase deficiency)

1984

We describe 5 adult women with severe hirsutism due to late onset 21-hydroxylase deficiency. Diagnosis was performed on the finding of high serum 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17OHP) levels with a marked hyperresponse to an ACTH test. The endocrine study showed in most patients a gonadotropin behavior similar to that observed in classical polycystic ovary (PCO) syndrome. Prolactin levels were slightly increased in basal conditions and presented an exaggerated response to TRH stimulation.

Psychometric properties of measures of sociocultural influence and internalization of appearance ideals across eight countries

2020

The aim of the current study was to examine the psychometric properties of two well-established measures of sociocultural influence and internalization of the thin/low body fat ideal and muscular ideal. Data from 6272 emerging adults (68.9 % female), aged 18-30 years from Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Italy, Japan, Spain, and the U.S. were included in this study. Participants completed measures of pressure from mother, fathers, peers, and media, to both increase muscles and lose weight, as well as internalization of the thin/low body fat ideal and muscular ideal. Overall, support for partial invariance was found across the scales. In addition, group level differences were found between…

Femininity and Fertility in Sisters with Twin Brothers: Prenatal Androgenization? Cross-Sex Socialization?

2002

Are sisters of twin brothers behaviorally or physiologically masculinized? Prenatal exposure to their brothers' androgens and postnatal socialization experiences unique to girls growing up with twin brothers might influence their attitudes, pubertal development, and reproductive histories. To investigate, we studied age- and cohort-matched samples of Finnish sisters from same-sex and opposite-sex twin pairs. Using data from two ongoing longitudinal studies of consecutive birth cohorts of Finnish twins, we assessed pubertal development at ages 11 and 14 and endorsement of attitudes associated with femininity at age 16. We also studied fertility in Finnish women from same- and opposite-sex t…

New data from the Italian National Register of Congenital Coagulopathies, 2016 Annual Survey

2018

BACKGROUND: In Italy, the National Register of Congenital Coagulopathies (NRCC) collects epidemiological and therapeutic data from patients affected by haemophilia A (HA), haemophilia B (HB), von Willebrand’s disease (vWD) and other rare coagulation disorders. Here we present data from the 2016 annual survey. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data are provided by the Italian Haemophilia Centres, on a voluntary basis. Information flows from every Centre to a web-based platform of the Italian Association of Haemophilia Centres, shared with the Italian National Institute of Health, in accordance with current privacy laws. Patients are classified by diagnosis, disease severity, age, gender and treatment-r…

How University Students With Reading Difficulties Are Supported in Achieving Their Goals

2015

We examine (a) what social ties university students with a history of reading difficulty (RD) report assisting them to achieve their goals, (b) outlets available for developing social ties, (c) resources mobilized within these relationships, and (d) the impact of social ties’ status on academic achievement. Participants were 107 university students with RD who were currently completing or had recently completed a university degree. Results showed that university students with RD named friends, parents, and significant others (e.g., boy/girlfriend, spouse) as social ties most often. Personal social ties were developed through social media networking sites and within close relationships, and…
