Comparing Airborne and Satellite Retrievals of Optical and Microphysical Properties of Cirrus and Deep Convective Clouds using a Radiance Ratio Techn…
2017
Abstract. Solar radiation reflected by cirrus and deep convective clouds (DCCs) was measured by the Spectral Modular Airborne Radiation Measurement System (SMART) installed on the German HALO (High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft) during the ML-CIRRUS and the ACRIDICON-CHUVA campaigns. In particular flights, HALO performed closely collocated measurements with overpasses of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board of Aqua satellite. Based on the nadir upward radiance, the optical thickness τ and bulk particle effective radius reff of cirrus and DCC are retrieved using a radiance ratio algorithm which considers the cloud thermodynamic phase, the cloud verti…
In-scene atmospheric correction of hyperspectral thermal infrared images with nadir, horizontal, and oblique view angles
2012
Atmospheric corrections for hyperspectral thermal images acquired with nadir, horizontal, and oblique views have typically relied on atmospheric modelling software, such as Moderate Resolution Atmospheric Transmission MODTRAN, to estimate atmospheric parameters. Data-only corrections, which require only information from the scene, are more versatile and less labour intensive, but do not yet seem to have been applied to horizontal and oblique views. Here, we apply, and modify where necessary, one published data-only algorithm in-scene atmospheric correction ISAC to nadir, horizontal, and slanted views The Aerospace Corporation's Spatially Enhanced Broadband Array Spectrograph System SEBASS a…
Blood Transfusion in Elderly Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction: Data from the RICO Survey.
2017
Red blood cell transfusion benefit during acute myocardial infarction remains unclear in the elderly. We aimed to assess the transfusion impact on 1-year mortality in acute myocardial infarction patients aged ≥65 years, according to their age and hemoglobin nadir. We included 3316 consecutive patients with acute myocardial infarction aged ≥65 years from the "obseRvatoire des Infarctus de Côte d'Or" (RICO) survey. They were categorized according to their hemoglobin nadir (≤8,8 to ≤10, and10 g/dL) and age (80 or ≥80 years).A total of 1906 patients (57%) were 65-79 years old, and 1410 (43%) were aged ≥80 years, of whom 103 (5%) and 145 (10%) patients received red blood cell transfusion, respect…
Effect of Soil Moisture on the Angular Variation of Thermal Infrared Emissivity of Inorganic Soils
2014
Emissivity is influenced by different factors. This study deals with the effect of the soil moisture (SM) content on the zenithal (θ) variation of ratio-to-nadir emissivity (εr), for a wide variety of inorganic bare soils. To retrieve εr, a goniometer assembly was used, together with two identical CIMEL Electronique CE312-2 radiometers working at six spectral bands within 7.7-14.3 μm, performing simultaneous radiance measurements at different combinations of zenith and azimuth angles. The results showed that the effect of SM upon εr(θ) is different depending on the spectral range and textural composition of the sample. Sandy soils showed a decrease of εr(θ) from nadir up to 0.132 for θ ≥ 40…
Factors related to early castration resistance in metastatic prostate cancer. Results from the National Prostate Cancer Registry in Spain
2019
Abstract Introduction The objective of the study was to determine the factors independently related with the development of castration resistance (CR) in prostate cancer (PC) in the medium term. Material and methods 155 patients diagnosed with metastatic PC with a follow-up of up to 39 months. Data taken from the National PC Registry. The evaluated variables were age, PSA, nadir PSA, Gleason, perineural invasion, TNM stages, and ADT type (intermittent / continuous). Results Mean follow-up 26,2 ± 13,4 months. 47.1% developed early CR, with mean time until onset of 12,2 ± 8,7 months. Univariate analysis: the mean PSA was correlated with CR (290 ± 905,1 ng/mL in non CR, 519,1 ± 1437,2 ng/mL in…
Remote photoplethysmography for skin perfusion monitoring using narrowband illumination
2019
The purpose of this study was to determine potential of remote photoplethysmography for skin perfusion monitoring, using 540 nm narrowband and 530 nm broadband illuminations. The alterations of cutaneous circulation were produced by topical skin heating protocol. The setup comprises of 530 nm LED light source and two identical cameras operated simultaneously: one equipped with narrowband optical filter (CWL=540nm), and another without filter. Results demonstrate the typical heating test response curve- comprising first peak, nadir and plato phase, which were significantly different in narrowband and broadband illumination. It was concluded that selection of optimal light source parameters i…

In this study we present a hyperspectral flying goniometer system, based on a rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a spectrometer mounted on an active gimbal. We show that this approach may be used to collect multiangular hyperspectral data over vegetated environments. The pointing and positioning accuracy are assessed using structure from motion and vary from σ = 1° to 8° in pointing and σ = 0.7 to 0.8 m in positioning. We use a wheat dataset to investigate the influence of angular effects on the NDVI, TCARI and REIP vegetation indices. Angular effects caused significant variations on the indices: NDVI = 0.83–0.95; TCARI = 0.04–0.116; REIP = 729–735 nm. Our analysis high…
An angular-dependent split-window equation for SST retrieval from off-nadir observations
2007
An angular-dependent split-window equation is proposed for determining the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) at any observation angle, including large viewing angles at the image edges of satellite sensors with wide swaths. The proposed equation takes into account the angular dependences of the atmospheric correction and also the emissivity correction. An explicit dependence on the SSE is considered in an independent term. The inclusion of such a term is not common in the current operational SST algorithms but we consider it appropriate taking into account the non-blackness of the sea surface emission for large angles and also the dependence on wind speed. The equation has been adapted to the M…
A simple equation for determining sea surface emissivity in the 3–15 µm region
2009
The high level of accuracy demanded for the sea surface temperature retrieval from infrared data requires an accurate determination of directional sea surface emissivity (SSE). Previous models have permitted calculating SSEs using a physical characterization of sea surface roughness and emission. However, these result in complex equations, and make an operational application difficult. This paper presents a simple SSE algorithm based on a parametrization of one of these models, which was selected as a reference since it reproduces SSE experimental data to a reasonable level of accuracy. The parametrization provides the SSE variation with observation angle and wind speed from a given nadir S…
Water‐vapour retrieval from Meteosat 8/SEVIRI observations
2007
This paper aims to propose operational algorithms to retrieve the total atmospheric water vapour content (W) using the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) on-board Meteosat 8. MODTRAN3.5 was used to obtain simulated data in the thermal infrared channels IR10.8 and IR12.0, in order to determine the numerical values of the coefficients of the algorithms. The algorithm proposed for land pixels takes into account the SEVIRI observation geometry and the radiometric temperatures obtained in the split-window channels at two different times during a day and requires a minimum difference of 10 K in terms of temperature between the two situations. Comprehensive error analyses gave …
