Giant Anomalous Nernst Effect in Noncollinear Antiferromagnetic Mn-based Antiperovskite Nitrides

2020

The anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) - the generation of a transverse electric voltage by a longitudinal heat current in conducting ferromagnets or antiferromagnets - is an appealing approach for thermoelectric power generation in spin caloritronics. The ANE in antiferromagnets is particularly convenient for the fabrication of highly efficient and densely integrated thermopiles as lateral configurations of thermoelectric modules increase the coverage of heat source without suffering from the stray fields that are intrinsic to ferromagnets. In this work, using first-principles calculations together with a group theory analysis, we systematically investigate the spin order-dependent ANE in nonco…

Quantum-well states in ultrathin Ag(111) films deposited onto H-passivated Si(111)-(1x1) surfaces

2002

Ag(111) films were deposited at room temperature onto H-passivated Si(111)-(1x1) substrates, and subsequently annealed at 300 C. An abrupt non-reactive Ag/Si interface is formed, and very uniform non-strained Ag(111) films of 6-12 monolayers have been grown. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy has been used to study the valence band electronic properties of these films. Well-defined Ag sp quantum-well states (QWS) have been observed at discrete energies between 0.5-2eV below the Fermi level, and their dispersions have been measured along the GammaK, GammaMM'and GammaL symmetry directions. QWS show a parabolic bidimensional dispersion, with in-plane effective mass of 0.38-0.50mo, along…

Bending-Induced Delamination of van der Waals Solids

2013

Although sheets of layered van der Waals solids offer great opportunities to custom-design nanomaterial properties, their weak interlayer adhesion challenges structural stability against mechanical deformation. Here, bending-induced delamination of multilayer sheets is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations, using graphene as an archetypal van der Waals solid. Simulations show that delamination of a graphene sheet occurs when its radius of curvature decreases roughly below $R_c=5.3\text{nm}\times (\text{number of layers})^{3/2}$ and that, as a rule, one-third of the layers get delaminated. These clear results are explained by a general and transparent model, a useful future referenc…

Helical magnetic structure and the anomalous and topological Hall effects in epitaxial B20 Fe$_{1-y}$Co$_y$Ge films

2018

Epitaxial films of the B20-structure compound Fe1−yCoyGe were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on Si (111) substrates. The magnetization varied smoothly from the bulklike values of one Bohr magneton per Fe atom for FeGe to zero for nonmagnetic CoGe. The chiral lattice structure leads to a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and the films' helical magnetic ground state was confirmed using polarized neutron reflectometry measurements. The pitch of the spin helix, measured by this method, varies with Co content y and diverges at y∼0.45. This indicates a zero crossing of the DMI, which we reproduced in calculations using first-principles methods. We also measured the longitudinal and Hall r…

Reduced thermal conductivity of TiNiSn/HfNiSn superlattices

2015

Diminution of the thermal conductivity is a crucial aspect in thermoelectric research. We report a systematic and significant reduction of the cross-plane thermal conductivity in a model system consisting of DC sputtered TiNiSn and HfNiSn half-Heusler superlattices. The reduction of $\kappa$ is measured by the 3$\omega$ method and originates from phonon scattering at the internal interfaces. Heat transport in the superlattices is calculated based on Boltzmann transport theory, including a diffusive mismatch model for the phonons at the internal interfaces. Down to superlattice periodicity of 3 nm the phonon spectrum mismatch between the superlattice components quantitatively explains the re…

The effect of Cu substitution on the A1g mode of La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3 manganites

2003

We report on the first Raman data of Cu substituted La(1-y)Sr(y)Mn(1-x)Cu(x)O3 (0 < x < 0.10 and 0.17 < y < 0.3, accordingly in order to have the same Mn(4+)/[Mn(4+)+Mn(3+)] ratio), collected in the frequency range 100-900 cm-1 and at room temperature, with parallel and crossed polarizations of the incident and scattered light. Spectra were fitted with a Drude-Lorentz model, and peaks at 190-220 and 430 cm-1, together with two broad structures centered at near 500 and 670 cm-1, have been found. We also have observed that the A1g mode is substantially shifted with increasing Cu substitution. The A1g phonon shift is a linear function of the tolerance factor t and the rhombohedral …

Direct atomic layer deposition of ultrathin aluminium oxide on monolayer $MoS_2$ exfoliated on gold: the role of the substrate

2021

In this paper we demonstrated the thermal Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) growth at 250 {\deg}C of highly homogeneous and ultra-thin ($\approx$ 3.6 nm) $Al_2O_3$ films with excellent insulating properties directly onto a monolayer (1L) $MoS_2$ membrane exfoliated on gold. Differently than in the case of 1L $MoS_2$ supported by a common insulating substrate ($Al_2O_3/Si$), a better nucleation process of the high-k film was observed on the 1L $MoS_2/Au$ system since the ALD early stages. Atomic force microscopy analyses showed a $\approx 50\%$ $Al_2O_3$ surface coverage just after 10 ALD cycles, its increasing up to $>90\%$ (after 40 cycles), and an uniform $\approx$ 3.6 nm film, after 80 cycle…

New Materials with High Spin Polarization Investigated by X-Ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism

2013

We investigate element-specific spin and orbital magnetic moments of polycrystalline bulk Heusler alloys that are predicted to be half-metallic with composition Co2YZ (Y = Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe and Z = Al, Ga, Si, Ge, Sn, Sb) using magnetic circular dichroism in X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS/XMCD). In addition to stoichiometric compounds we also investigate composition series with partly replaced elements on the Y-site (Co2Fe x Cr1−x Si, Co2Mn x Ti1−x Si and Co2Mn x Ti1−x Ge) and on the Z-site (Co2MnGa1−x Ge x ) promising a tailoring of the Fermi level with respect to the minority band gap. We compare experimental results with theoretical predictions elucidating the influence of local disorde…

2020

In this paper we study the distribution of scattering resonances for a multidimensional semi-classical Schr\"odinger operator, associated to a potential well in an island at energies close to the maximal one that limits the separation of the well and the surrounding sea.

Colossal Density-Driven Resistance Response in the Negative Charge Transfer Insulator MnS2

2021

A reversible density driven insulator to metal to insulator transition in high-spin MnS_{2} is experimentally observed, leading with a colossal electrical resistance drop of 10^{8}  Ω by 12 GPa. Density functional theory simulations reveal the metallization to be unexpectedly driven by previously unoccupied S_{2}^{2-} σ_{3p}^{*} antibonding states crossing the Fermi level. This is a unique variant of the charge transfer insulator to metal transition for negative charge transfer insulators having anions with an unsaturated valence. By 36 GPa the emergence of the low-spin insulating arsenopyrite (P2_{1}/c) is confirmed, and the bulk metallicity is broken with the system returning to an insula…
