Dynamical environments of relativistic binaries: The phenomenon of resonance shifting

2019

In this article, we explore both numerically and analytically how the dynamical environments of mildly relativistic binaries evolve with increasing the general relativity factor $\gamma$ (the normalized inverse of the binary size measured in the units of the gravitational radius corresponding to the total mass of the system). Analytically, we reveal a phenomenon of the relativistic shifting of mean-motion resonances: on increasing $\gamma$, the resonances between the test particle and the central binary shift, due to the relativistic variation of the mean motions of the primary and secondary binaries and the relativistic advance of the tertiary's pericenter. To exhibit the circumbinary dyna…

Debating Relativistic Cosmology, 1917–1924

2018

Physical astronomy as we know it today matured during the latter half of the twentieth century. It was preceded by a period Jean Eisenstaedt has dubbed the “low water mark” in general relativity (GR), covering roughly the period 1925 to 1955 (Eisenstaedt 1988b). Starting in the 1960s, however, a series of startling developments helped pave the way for what has since been called the “renaissance of general relativity,” which suddenly took on great significance for astrophysics and cosmology. In the days of Einstein and Eddington, one could imagine a gravitational field so strong that it would produce a black hole, a true space–time singularity. People talked about such things, but hardly any…

Adaptive interpolation with maximum order close to discontinuities

2022

Abstract Adaptive rational interpolation has been designed in the context of image processing as a new nonlinear technique that avoids the Gibbs phenomenon when we approximate a discontinuous function. In this work, we present a generalization to this method giving explicit expressions for all the weights for any order of the algorithm. It has a similar behavior to weighted essentially non oscillatory (WENO) technique but the design of the weights in this case is more simple. Also, we propose a new way to construct them obtaining the maximum order near the discontinuities. Some experiments are performed to demonstrate our results and to compare them with standard methods.

Order statistics-based parametric classification for multi-dimensional distributions

2013

Traditionally, in the field of Pattern Recognition (PR), the moments of the class-conditional densities of the respective classes have been used to perform classification. However, the use of phenomena that utilized the properties of the Order Statistics (OS) were not reported. Recently, in [10,8], we proposed a new paradigm named CMOS, Classification by the Moments of Order Statistics, which specifically used these quantifiers. It is fascinating that CMOS is essentially ''anti''-Bayesian in its nature because the classification is performed in a counter-intuitive manner, i.e., by comparing the testing sample to a few samples distant from the mean, as opposed to the Bayesian approach in whi…

Non-Local Scattering Kernel and the Hydrodynamic Limit

2007

In this paper we study the interaction of a fluid with a wall in the framework of the kinetic theory. We consider the possibility that the fluid molecules can penetrate the wall to be reflected by the inner layers of the wall. This results in a scattering kernel which is a non-local generalization of the classical Maxwell scattering kernel. The proposed scattering kernel satisfies a global mass conservation law and a generalized reciprocity relation. We study the hydrodynamic limit performing a Knudsen layer analysis, and derive a new class of (weakly) nonlocal boundary conditions to be imposed to the Navier-Stokes equations.

Accounting for dispersion and correlation in estimating Safety Performance Functions. An overview starting from a case study

2013

In statistical analysis of crash count data, as well as in estimating Safety Performance Functions (SPFs), the failure of Poisson equidispersion hypothesis and the temporal correlation in annual crash counts must be considered to improve the reliability of estimation of the parameters. After a short discussion on the statistical tools accounting for dispersion and correlation, the paper presents the methodological path followed in estimating a SPF for urban four-leg, signalized intersections. Since the case study exhibited signs of underdispersion, a Conway-Maxwell-Poisson Generalized Linear Model (GLM) was fitted to the data; then a quasi-Poisson model in the framework of Generalized Estim…

Eight Simple Guidelines for Improved Understanding of Transformations and Nonlinear Effects

2021

Jyväskylästä kirjoitettiin: Käyn läpi Extra-Vipusessa ristiriitaisiksi luokitettuja yhteisjulkaisuja. Julkaisu " Eight Simple Guidelines for Improved Understanding of Transformations and Nonlinear Effects" on meillä laitettu A2 ja teillä A1. Meillä varmaan päädytty tuohon A2:een kun tiivistelmässä sanotaan "Building on a systematic review of six leading management journals..". Mutta mitä mieltä olette, kumpi olisi parempi? Transforming variables before analysis or applying a transformation as a part of a generalized linear model are common practices in organizational research. Several methodological articles addressing the topic, either directly or indirectly, have been published in the rec…

Interest of exome sequencing trio-like strategy based on pooled parental DNA for diagnosis and translational research in rare diseases.

2021

Abstract Background Exome sequencing (ES) has become the most powerful and cost‐effective molecular tool for deciphering rare diseases with a diagnostic yield approaching 30%–40% in solo‐ES and 50% in trio‐ES. We applied an innovative parental DNA pooling method to reduce the parental sequencing cost while maintaining the diagnostic yield of trio‐ES. Methods We pooled six (Agilent‐CRE‐v2–100X) or five parental DNA (TWIST‐HCE–70X) aiming to detect allelic balance around 8–10% for heterozygous status. The strategies were applied as second‐tier (74 individuals after negative solo‐ES) and first‐tier approaches (324 individuals without previous ES). Results The allelic balance of parental‐pool v…

Autosomal microsatellite and mtDNA genetic analysis in Sicily (Italy).

2003

DNA samples from 465 blood donors living in 7 towns of Sicily, the largest island of Italy, have been collected according to well defined criteria, and their genetic heterogeneity tested on the basis of 9 autosomal microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA polymorphisms for a total of 85 microsatellite allele and 10 mtDNA haplogroup frequencies. A preliminary account of the results shows that: a) the samples are genetically heterogeneous; b) the first principal coordinates of the samples are correlated more with their longitude than with their latitude, and this result is even more remarkable when one outlier sample (Butera) is not considered; c) distances among samples calculated from allele an…

Diseased Social Predators

2017

Social predators benefit from cooperation in the form of increased hunting success, but may be at higher risk of disease infection due to living in groups. Here, we use mathematical modeling to investigate the impact of disease transmission on the population dynamics benefits provided by group hunting. We consider a predator-prey model with foraging facilitation that can induce strong Allee effects in the predators. We extend this model by an infectious disease spreading horizontally and vertically in the predator population. The model is a system of three nonlinear differential equations. We analyze the equilibrium points and their stability as well as one- and two-parameter bifurcations. …
