Unsteadiness and transition to turbulence in woven spacer filled channels for Membrane Distillation

To characterize the performance of Membrane Distillation (MD) modules, channels filled with woven spacers were investigated by Computational Fluid Dynamics (including Direct Numerical Simulations and the use of the SST k-ω turbulence model) and by parallel experiments with Thermochromic Liquid Crystals. The cases considered here regard mutually orthogonal filaments with a spacer pitch to channel height ratio P/H=2, two spacer orientations θ with respect to the main flow (0° and 45°), and bulk Reynolds numbers Re from ∼200 to ∼2000, an interval of great interest in practical MD applications. Lorentz invariance and gauge equivariance

Trying to place Lorentz and gauge transformations on the same foundation, it turns out that the first one generates invariance, the second one equivariance, at least for the abelian case. This similarity is not a hypothesis but is supported by and a consequence of the path integral formalism in quantum field theory.

Václav Hlavatý on intuition in Riemannian space

Abstract We present a historical commentary together with an English translation of a mathematical-philosophical paper by the Czech differential geometer and later proponent of a geometrized unified field theory Vaclav Hlavatý (1894–1969). The paper was published in 1924 at the height of interpretational debates about recent advancements in differential geometry triggered by the advent of Einstein's general theory of relativity. Diagnostics of capillary light sources by means of line shape measurements and modeling

In this work the Hg visible triplet spectral lines were measured by means of Fourier Transform spectrometer and deconvoluted by Tikhonov's regularisation method and line shape modelling. The lines were collected from Hg/Ar and Hg/Xe high frequency capillary lamps. In our previous work, the spatial plasma homogeneity of isotope Hg/Xe and Hg/Ar capillary lamps was investigated by means of tomography. The lamps were operated in different working positions – horizontally and vertically. Acoustic properties of nanoscale oxide heterostructures probed by UV Raman spectroscopy

We study high quality molecular-beam epitaxy grown BaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlat-tices using ultraviolet Raman spectroscopy. In the low energy spectral region, acoustic phonon doublets are observed. These are due to the artificial superlattice periodicity and consequent folding of the acoustic phonon dispersion. From the study of samples with different BaTiO3/SrTiO3 layer thicknesses the effective sound velocities within each of the layers are obtained.

Al-Ghazālī builds squarely on the commentary tradition on Aristotle’s Peri hermeneias: words signify things by means of concepts and correspondingly, existence is laid out on three levels, linguistic, conceptual, and particular (i.e. extramental). Optical absorption and Raman spectroscopy of CuWO4

Th e electronic absorption and Raman spectra of CuWO4 are studied as a function of pressure in the 0 - 20 GPa range. The below-gap absorption bands at 1.15, 1.38 and 1.56 eV correspond to Cu 2+ d-transitions split by the Jahn-Teller distortion of CuO6 (Req = 1.98 A; Rax = 2.39 A; Qθ = 0.47 A). Pressure induces a strong reduction of the JT distortion up to 10 GPa. Above this pressure we observe, by optical absorption and Raman spectroscopy, a first-order phase transition at 11 GPa with phase coexistence in the 10-12 GPa range, as it is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Raman scattering in nanosized nickel oxide NiO

2007

Magnetic ordering in nanosized (100 and 1500 nm) nickel oxide NiO powders, prepared by the plasma synthesis method, was studied using Raman scattering spectroscopy in a wide range of temperatures from 10 to 300 K. It was observed that the intensity of two- magnon band decreases rapidly for smaller crystallites size. This effect is attributed to a decrease of antiferromagnetic spin correlations and leads to the antiferromagnetic-to- paramagnetic phase transition .

Results from the Project 8 phase-1 cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy detector

The Project 8 collaboration seeks to measure the absolute neutrino mass scale by means of precision spectroscopy of the beta decay of tritium. Our technique, cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy, measures the frequency of the radiation emitted by electrons produced by decays in an ambient magnetic field. Because the cyclotron frequency is inversely proportional to the electron's Lorentz factor, this is also a measurement of the electron's energy.
