The structural relaxation of molten sodium disilicate

2002

We use molecular dynamics computer simulations to study the relaxation dynamics of Na2O-2(SiO2) in its molten, highly viscous state. We find that at low temperatures the incoherent intermediate scattering function for Na relaxes about 100 times faster than the one of the Si and O atoms. In contrast to this all coherent functions relax on the same time scale if the wave-vector is around 1AA^-1. This anomalous relaxation dynamics is traced back to the channel-like structure for the Na atoms that have been found for this system. We find that the relaxation dynamics for Si and O as well as the time dependence of the coherent functions for Na can be rationalized well by means of mode-coupling th…

Higher-order correlation functions and nonlinear response functions in a gaussian trap model.

2012

The four-time correlation function of a general dynamical variable obeying Gaussian statistics is calculated for the trap model with a Gaussian density of states. It is argued that for energy-independent variables this function is reminiscent of the four-time functions that have been discussed earlier in the interpretation of the results of four-dimensional NMR experiments on supercooled liquids. Using an approximative relation between the four-time correlation function and the cubic response function the nonlinear susceptibility is calculated and the results are compared with the corresponding ones resulting from an exact calculation. It is found that the results of the approximation chang…

Density-Functional Theory of Quantum Freezing: Sensitivity to Liquid-State Structure and Statistics

1997

Density-functional theory is applied to compute the ground-state energies of quantum hard-sphere solids. The modified weighted-density approximation is used to map both the Bose and the Fermi solid onto a corresponding uniform Bose liquid, assuming negligible exchange for the Fermi solid. The required liquid-state input data are obtained from a paired phonon analysis and the Feynman approximation, connecting the static structure factor and the linear response function. The Fermi liquid is treated by the Wu-Feenberg cluster expansion, which approximately accounts for the effects of antisymmetry. Liquid-solid transitions for both systems are obtained with no adjustment of input data. Limited …

Drift-controlled anomalous diffusion: a solvable Gaussian model

2000

We introduce a Langevin equation characterized by a time dependent drift. By assuming a temporal power-law dependence of the drift we show that a great variety of behavior is observed in the dynamics of the variance of the process. In particular diffusive, subdiffusive, superdiffusive and stretched exponentially diffusive processes are described by this model for specific values of the two control parameters. The model is also investigated in the presence of an external harmonic potential. We prove that the relaxation to the stationary solution is power-law in time with an exponent controlled by one of model parameters.

Analysis of the incoherent intermediate scattering function in the framework of the idealized mode-coupling theory: A Monte Carlo study for polymer m…

1994

In this Monte Carlo simulation, we calculate the incoherent intermediate scattering function ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\varphi}}}_{\mathit{q}}^{\mathit{s}}$(t) for a three-dimensional dense polymer melt after having made long relaxation runs in order to eliminate the history of the cooling procedure sufficiently. This function shows the signature of a two-step process in the temperature interval T\ensuremath{\in}[0.16,0.21] (the temperature is measured in units of an energy parameter introduced in the Hamiltonian of the model) whose time evolution was quantitatively analyzed in the framework of the idealized mode-coupling theory (MCT) within the \ensuremath{\beta}-relaxation regime. As a result…

Relic neutrinos, thermal axions, and cosmology in early 2014

2014

We present up to date cosmological bounds on the sum of active neutrino masses as well as on extended cosmological scenarios with additional thermal relics, as thermal axions or sterile neutrino species. Our analyses consider all the current available cosmological data in the beginning of year 2014, including the very recent and most precise Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) measurements from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. In the minimal three active neutrino scenario, we find Sum m_nu < 0.22 eV at 95% CL from the combination of CMB, BAO and Hubble Space Telescope measurements of the Hubble constant. A non zero value for the sum of the three active neutrino masses of about …

Cosmological limits on neutrino unknowns versus low redshift priors

2015

Recent Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropy measurements from the Planck mission have significantly improved previous constraints on the neutrino masses as well as the bounds on extended models with massless or massive sterile neutrino states. However, due to parameter degeneracies, additional low redshift priors are mandatory in order to sharpen the CMB neutrino bounds. We explore here the role of different priors on low redshift quantities, such as the Hubble constant, the cluster mass bias, and the reionization optical depth $\tau$. Concerning current priors on the Hubble constant and the cluster mass bias, the bounds on the neutrino parameters may di…

Chaotic Antiferromagnetic Nano-Oscillator driven by Spin-Torque

2021

We theoretically describe the behavior of a terahertz nano-oscillator based on an anisotropic antiferromagnetic dynamical element driven by spin torque. We consider the situation when the polarization of the spin-current is perpendicular to the external magnetic field applied along the anisotropy easy-axis. We determine the domain of the parametric space (field, current) where the oscillator demonstrates chaotic dynamics. Characteristics of the chaotic regimes are analyzed using conventional techniques such as spectra of the Lyapunov exponents. We show that the threshold current of the chaos appearance is particularly low in the vicinity of the spin-flop transition. In this regime, we consi…
