Phase diagrams were calculated for flowing solutions of polystyrene in trans-decahydronaphthalene assuming that the energy (Es) stored in the sheared state has to be added to the Gibbs energy of mixing; Es is computed from viscometric data (flow curves). The resulting phase diagrams exhibit two maxima in most of the cases instead of only one for the stagnant solutions. A comparison with experimental data (Part 1) shows that the calculated demixing behaviour agrees well for moderate shear rates and concentrations of the polymer. Deviations in the semidilute region, particularly for higher values, are a consequence of the fact that so far no reliable theoretical relation has been given for th…

Spectrophotometric determinations of binding constants between cyclodextrins and aromatic nitrogen substrates at various pH values

2001

The inclusion capacity of native β-cyclodextrin (1) and mono-(6-amino-6-deoxy)-β-cyclodextrin (2) versus aromatic compounds having a nitro or an amino group or both has been investigated at three different pH values. Molecular interactions in inclusion complexes have also been investigated by means of molecular mechanics (MM2/QD) models. Electrostatic and van der Waals interactions and the formation of a hydrogen bond between the donor amino group and the oxygen atom of the secondary hydroxyl group seem to be the more important contributions in determining complex stability. The inclusion capacity of two different cyclodextrins versus aromatic compounds has been investigated at three differ…

Molecular motion, thermal expansion, and phase transitions in paraffins: A model for polymers

2007

Owing to their simple chemical structure paraffins are generally regarded as representing a system which is especially suitable for a model study of the thermal behavior of oligomeric and polymeric solids. Extensive investigations on the properties of n-tritriacontane (C33H68) provide an example. For this system an identification of several types of motional mechanisms become possible. Their presence leads to peculiarities in the thermal expansion and to the occurrence of solid-solid phase transitions. Paraffins and polyethylene exhibit a marked anisotropy in the lateral thermal expansion. An analysis of the molecular background can be based on a modified Gruneisen theory which connects exp…

The unperturbed dimensions parameter KΘ is one of the most important characteristics of a polymer chain. For binary systems (polymer/solvent) and mostly for ternary systems (polymer/solvent(1)/solvent(2)) the KΘ values show large discrepancies with respect to those under thetaconditions in a single solvent. These discrepancies can be explained by considering that the interaction parameter χ (and consequently the coil dimensions or the number of intramolecular contacts between polymer segments) changes with molecular weight M. Assuming this dependency, a modified Stockmayer-Fixman equation is proposed from which a unique value of KΘ for a given polymer, independent of M, is obtained. The use…

Intrinsic viscosities of polyelectrolytes in the absence and in the presence of extra salt: Consequences of the stepwise conversion of dextran into a…

2011

Abstract Viscosities of dilute polymer solutions were measured in capillary viscometers for samples varying in their fraction f of charged units from 0.00 to 0.90. The dependence of the logarithm of the relative viscosity on polymer concentration c is in all cases reproduced quantitatively by three characteristic parameters: [ η ], the intrinsic viscosity; B , a viscometric interaction parameter (related to the Huggins constant); [ η ] , a parameter required only for polyelectrolytes at low concentrations of extra salt. In pure water [ η ] increases more than 80 times as the fraction f rises from zero to 0.90 and [ η ] starts from zero and goes up to ≈71 mL/g. Upon the addition of NaCl [ η …

Stimuli-responsive brushes with active minority components: Monte Carlo study and analytical theory

2015

Using a combination of analytical theory, Monte Carlo simulations, and three dimensional self-consistent field calculations, we study the equilibrium properties and the switching behavior of adsorption-active polymer chains included in a homopolymer brush. The switching transition is driven by a conformational change of a small fraction of minority chains, which are attracted by the substrate. Depending on the strength of the attractive interaction, the minority chains assume one of two states: An exposed state characterized by a stem-crown-like conformation, and an adsorbed state characterized by a flat two-dimensional structure. Comparing the Monte Carlo simulations, which use an Edwards-…

Spectroscopic and structural characterization of pure and FeCl3-containing tri-n-butyl phosphate

2014

The spectroscopic properties and liquid structure of pure tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and FeCl3/TBP solutions have been investigated by Uv–Vis and Raman spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction and conductometry. Uv–Vis and Raman spectra, supported by conductometric measurements, consistently indicate that the solubilized salt is present mostly as TBP n [FeCl3 − n ] n+ and FeCl4 − complex ions due to specific interaction with the TBP phosphate group. Thanks to this interaction, a high amount of salt (up to 13 % w/w) can be dissolved despite the relatively low dielectric constant of TBP. The X-ray diffractogram of pure TBP has been interpreted in terms of three main contributions which can be attri…

Polymer and Dye Probe Diffusion in Poly(methyl methacrylate) below the Glass Transition Studied by Forced Rayleigh Scattering

1999

By dissolving tracer quantities of 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PQ) in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) it was possible to study by forced Rayleigh scattering (FRS) the tracer diffusion of the unbleached PQ as well as the photoproduct which is covalently bound to the PMMA molecules. The PMMA samples with molecular weights, Mw, of 103−105 were intermittently annealed at 80 °C for diffusion times of up to one year. From the results we conclude that polymer chain diffusion may be possible at temperatures more than 20 K below the glass transition temperature Tg, but further experiments are necessary, in particular, since we cannot exclude that our results are due to yet unexplained long time aging…

Influence of Molar Mass Distribution on the Compatibility of Polymers

1996

Abstract Phase equilibria were calculated by means of a new method (direct minimization of the Gibbs energy of mixing) for polymer blends consisting of monodisperse polymer A and polydisperse polymer B. The results obtained for a Schulz-Flory distribution of B (molecular nonuniformity U = (M w/M n) −1 = 1 and 100 components of model B) agree quantitatively with that of computations on the basis of continuous thermodynamics. The influence of U B on the miscibility of A and B in 1:1 mixtures was studied for constant M w of B, quantifying the incompatibility of the polymers by the length of the tie lines. The outcome of these calculations demonstrates that the typical effect of an augmentation…
