Staggered magnetic nanowire devices for effective domain-wall pinning in racetrack memory
2019
Domain-wall memory devices, in which the information is stored in nanowires, are expected to replace hard disk drives. A problem that remains to be solved in domain-wall memory is to pin the domain walls in a controllable manner at the nanometer scale using simple fabrication. We demonstrate the possibility to stabilize domain walls by making staggered nanowires. Controllable domain-wall movement is exhibited in permalloy nanowires using magnetic fields where the pinning field is about 10 mT. The pinning field and stability of the domain walls can be increased by adjusting the offset dimensions of the staggered nanowires. Domain-wall velocities of about 200 m/s are computed for the experime…
High-order-harmonic generation in dimensionally reduced systems
2013
The time-dependent wave function of a nanoring driven by a laser field is obtained by exploiting the symmetries inherent to the system and used for studying the properties of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the nanoring as a function of the polarization state of the laser. The diffused radiation has the characteristics of high-order-harmonic generation. For a noncircularly polarized laser field an extension of the expected cutoff position is evident, indicating that nanorings are efficient sources of radiation. The polarization state of the emitted harmonics can be opportunely controlled by varying the parameters of the pump field. The profile of the absorbed angular moment shows t…
Development of niobium-based superconducting junctions
2012
This thesis presents a review of publications which mainly focuses on the fabrication and performance of Nb-based normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions and superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions at low temperatures. The Cu/AlOx-Al/Nb based NIS double tunnel junctions were successfully fabricated using conventional electron beam lithography combined with multi-angle thermal evaporation of metals in ultra high vacuum. The subgap characteristics of these junctions showed expected temperature dependence from 0.2 K to 5 K with a good thermometry sensitivity 0.2-0.3 mV/K. Signatures of small electronic cooling effects were observed near the Nb …
