Underwater crime scenes always present a challenge for forensic researchers, as the destructive effect of water considerably complicates the chances of recovering material of evidential value. The aim of this study is to tackle the problem of developing marks that have been left on submerged objects. Determination of mono-, di- and trinitronaphthalenes in soil samples contaminated by explosives.

We investigated the extraction of eight mono-, di- and trinitronaphthalenes from soil samples by ultrasonic, respectively, soxhlet extraction. Sonication was the more convenient procedure with a usually higher repeatability than the soxhlet method. All extracts were analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection. These methods were used to determine the concentration of nitronaphthalenes in five soil samples polluted by explosives. The most abundant contaminants were 1,5- and 1,8-dinitronaphthalene as well as 1,3,5-, 1,3,8- and 1,4,5-trinitronaphthalene. Experimental and theoretical studies on polar Diels–Alder reactions of 1-nitronaphathalene developed in ionic liquids

The reactions between 1-nitronaphthalene 1 and two nucleophilic dienes, Danishefsky´s diene 2 and 1-trimethylsilyloxy-1,3-butadiene 3, to yield phenanthrenols 7 and 8 developed in protic and aprotic ionic liquids (ILs) with an imidazolium cation base permit to conclude that the reactions occur in better experimental conditions than in molecular solvents. The yields obtained with protic ILs are better than those observed with aprotic ILs. In this sense, the higher yields obtained with aprotic ILs, (working at 60ºC, 48 h) are comparable with the lower yields observed in protic ILs (60 ºC, 24 h). Abstract The hydrogenation activity of Pt supported on two mesoporous MCM-41 samples differing in their chemical composition has been studied by following the kinetics of the hydrogenation of naphthalene at 225–275°C reaction temperature and 5.0 MPa total pressure and by comparing the kinetic parameters obtained with Pt supported on a mesoporous amorphous silica-alumina (MSA) and other conventional supports, such as commercial amorphous silica-alumina (ASA), zeolite USY, γ-alumina, and silica. "Naphthocage", a naphthalene-based organic cage, reveals very strong binding (up to 1010 M-1) to aromatic (di)cationic guests, i.e., the tetrathiafulvalene mono- and dication and methyl viologen. Intercalation of the guests between two naphthalene walls is mediated by C-H···O, C-H···π, and cation···π interactions. The guests can be switched into and out of the cage by redox processes with high binding selectivity. Oxidation of the flexible cage itself in the absence of a guest leads to a stable radical cation with the oxidized naphthalene intercalated between and stabilized by the other two. Abstract We report that potassium leakage from cells leads to activation of the Ca2+-independent phospholipase A2 (iPLA2), and the latter plays a pivotal role in regulating the cleavage of pro-IL-1β by the IL-converting enzyme caspase-1 in human monocytes. K+ efflux led to increases of cellular levels of glycerophosphocholine, an unambiguous indicator of phospholipase A2 activation. Both maturation of IL-1β and formation of glycerophosphocholine were blocked by bromoenol lactone, the specific iPLA2 inhibitor. The anion recognition ability of the dicationic imidazolium salt 3,3′-di-n-octyl-1,1′- (1,3-phenylenedimethylene)diimidazolium 1,5-naphthalenedisulfonate ([m-Xyl-(oim)2][1,5-NDS]) was investigated in acetonitrile solution by means of proton NMR titrations. A wide range of anions, comprising simple inorganic ions, halides, and mono- and dicarboxylates was taken into account. The study showed that this receptor binds carboxylate anions more strongly than halides. Moreover [m- Xyl-(oim)2][1,5-NDS] displays selectivity for di- over monocarboxylate anions. Hemopressin is a short, nine amino acid peptide (H-Pro-Val-Asn-Phe-Lys-Leu-Leu-Ser-His-OH) isolated from rat brain that behaves as an inverse agonist at the cannabinoid receptor CB1, and is shown here to inhibit agonist-induced receptor internalization in a heterologous cell model. Since this peptide occurs naturally in the rodent brain, we determined its effect on appetite, an established central target of cannabinoid signaling. Hemopressin dose-dependently decreases night-time food intake in normal male rats and mice, as well as in obeseob/obmale mice, when administered centrally or systemically, without causing any obvious adverse side effects. The synthesis of a polyazamacrocycle constituted by two diethylenetriamine bridges functionalized at their central nitrogen with naphth-2-ylmethyl units and interconnected through 2,6-dimethylpyridine spacers (L1) is reported. The protonation behaviour of the new macrocycle in water and in water-ethanol 70/30 v/v mixed solvent has been examined by means of pH-metric, UV-Vis and steady-state fluorescence techniques. The synthesis and Zn(2+) coordination properties of a new macrocycle (L1) obtained by dipodal (2 + 2) condensation of the polyamine 3-(naphthalen-2-ylmethyl)pentane-1,5-diamine with 1H-pyrazole-3,5-dicarbaldehyde are reported. pH-metric studies show that L1 bears five measurable protonation steps in the 2.0-11.0 pH range. Fluorescence emission studies indicate that the removal of the first proton from the H(5)L1(5+) species leads to a significant decrease in the emission due to a photoinduced electron transfer process.
